What an amazing come from behind win for the Habs tonight - 5 unanswered goals !!! and a great confidence booster  Carbo has them playing really well. I see Montreal winning all their remaining games and finishing in 7th or 8th spot! :D Halak should get all the remaining starts as Abby has looked more like "Red Light" Racicot of late

Seems like all the Habs naysayers and defeatists have been out in force lately. Gohabsgo, I see that you're pretty lonely these days holding up the flag of the Habs faithful :D . I've been busy with work, travel, and FKKing in Germany but will join in soon.

Great to have you back Pablo - I heard that all your friends in Fantasyland missed you a lot. By the way, some sad news (stop reading here if you like - there's some ugly truth coming up next) : it doesn't look like your heroes will be the 4th seed as you so bravely predicted in the other thread you started. Cheer up - there's always next year...or decade...or, well let's be truthful: next milennium.

Disappointing

It sucks to hear the habs are not doing so well. I'll be going to see them this weekend against the best team in the league, Buffalo.
It will be my first live hockey game ever.
I hope they put a good fight, as I will be cheering for the home team.

Habs are actually having a good sequence, winning their last 5 and 7 out of their last 8. Another comeback win tonight, this time vs. the Rangers which puts them alone in the 8th spot but Canes, Leafs and Isles are all 2 points behing with 1 game in hand. Tampa's been struggling lately, their goaltending is atrocious. Sens and Sabres are Montreal's next due up: we'll see then what our Habs are really made of...

I could be wrong, but i believe the Leafs have sold out every game since 1962. Of course, as we all know, many of those season tickets are purchased by companies/corporations.

Wow that must make Toronto the masochist capital of the world. ;)

Come on you're being unfair. Only 60% of Leaf fans are masochists. (20% are hopelessly romantic dreamers, 15% are "over-medicated" and 5% are under the care of several physicians who are extremely confident that their patients will one day return to the real world).

Are we talking about the Leafs or Habs fans? Habs fans? Ok, i fully agree with you. :D

I was talking about Leafs fans Doc but I fully agree with YOU that the quote also applies to the sick puppies who idolize the Canadiens.

Like i mentionned earlier...the majority of season ticket subsribers are companies or corporations, so that stat isn't a reflection of the actual fan base. All it proves (Toronto having sold out since 1962) is that Toronto is a very wealthy & business-oriented city as compared to the rest of Canada. Trust me...one day, the Mtl Canadiens will relocate due to Quebec's poor economy. If they could move the Cleveland Browns, they will be able to move the Mtl Canadiens. Yes, this sucks....big time!

The salaray cap was install to prevent such atrocity.
Big city teams(Detroit,Ny Rangers, laughs) no longer have an unfair advantage over smaller markets.
They can move the Expos, the Alouettes but if someone dares touch the Habs,I wouldn't give him much time to live.
The Habs are here to stay,no matter the economic state of the city.
Oh and btw, they did relocate;from the Forum to the Bell Center.

Trust me, you don't understand the passion for hockey here, it'll never happen.
We are still Les Glorieux, what do they call Toronto?

1. The Maple Laughs
2. A bunch of whiners
3. The laughingstock of the NHL
4. All of the above.

Correct answer: 4.

Answer: 3

Another one that comes to mind is pathetically average. :p

As of the end of the 2006 season the Habs historically are 1037 games above 500 after 5652 GP :)

The Leafs are a measly 87 above 500 after 5546 GP.

Nuff said. ;)

Okay, you win.
This masochistic Leafs fan will now refer to the Habs as The Gloria's.

One thing about your post that i find amusing.....why do they keep referring to the Habs as a SMALL MARKET team? They are constantly sold-out, they have their own Habs-dedicated tv network (RDS), and are all over the tabloids & other media outlets such as local sports radio & TQS (110%). Name me 5 teams in the whole NHL that can compare to them in that aspect? Outside of Toronto & the NY Rangers, there are not many others.

So my question is....is referring the Habs to being a small market team a MYTH? A total fabrication sold to the fans by the team in order to explain its shortcomings?

I didn't say that Montreal was a small market but that it is a smaller market than the cities mentioned above,at least demographically.
Just like the Expos couldn't compete with NY,LA,Chicago,ect....

As for comparing the notoriety of the Habs to the Browns or Colts, sorry Doc but there are no comparison whatsoever. The Brooklyn Dodger were about 20-25 y/old when they were moved, and had the Yankees as close competition, ditto for the Browns and Colts, they weren't a century old like the Habs and with all due respect for those franchises, they didn't have the same notoriety.

In 2009 the Habs will reach 100 years of existence.

And btw,Canada's team is NOT the Laughs, but the MONTREAL CANADIENS.
When I watch games in Edmonton,Vancouver,Calgary and Ottawa I see thousands of Habs jerseys, the same can't be said about the Laughs, execpt when they fill half dozens of Buses to Montreal.

If the Expos had been in the American league east instead of the National league east, they would have had instant rivalries with Boston and Toronto. Combine that with a downtown stadium instead of the Big Owe and a decent ownership and they would have had no problem surviving. I believe they would have been thriving.

That being said...yes Mtl is a smaller market population wise but it is far from a small market interest wise. They have always been one of most successful teams in pro sports in fan following and game attendance. Not just ticket sales stats that many teams use to show 15,000 when there are less than 5,000 in the seats. That won't change and they will never move out of Montreal. And if the Leafs were in fact 'Canada's team' I'd vote for separation.

Maybe they would have survive, but that's it.They wouldn't have been competitive at all with a 50 millions payroll compare to that of both NY teams and Texas,LA,Boston,ect...and their 200+millions payroll.

Until MLB gets salary cap, small markets will always be figurants, struggling to make it to the top,and once they do reach it,well, they'll loose all their best players to the same ruthless sharks(Ny,Boston,ect...).

Mlb is the only major sport leauge with no salary cap. It's about time they enter 21st century.

Btw,back to subject, the Laughs got squashed big time tonight by the Rangers.:p
