Where do you go for a good breakfast in Montreal?

Any suggestions?

I like reasonably priced breakfast places with a huge menu selection. Something like Greenspot.

How about you?

It depends on the budget. If you want something simple and not super expensive, L’oeufrier is always great. They have many locations. (Various neighbourhoods)

If you want something a little more fancy and want to go on the weekend, Le Reine Elizabeth has an all you can eat breakfast. It’s currently closed because they’re on strike. (downtown)

Régine is also great and a little more on the fancy side. (Rosemont)

Beauty’s is a classic but be prepared to queue (Plateau)

Barley Cafe is fun if you’re a fan of cereals. I’m not sure if they still offer it but they had a cereal bar a few years ago. (Griffintown)

There are 2 places that come to mind- one is L'Avenue in Plateau, the other is Beauty's which is mentioned above. If you are a fan of Challah French Toast, I recommend Beauty's. L'Avenue is great for almost anything else. One problem if you are American is that you can't get good pancakes at most breakfast places in Montreal. It's not on the menu usually, and a few places attempted to make it for me with crepe batter, which was a disaster, because pancakes are not made from crepe batter but rather buttermilk batter. People in Montreal think a pancake is just an American crepe but crepe batter will not fluff up like buttermilk batter does.

There used to be one tourist trap place on St. Catherine between Peel and Stanley that made very good American style buttermilk pancakes. I forgot the name of the place but a real tourist trap kind of place that sort of catered to that crowd with high prices. Dox Holliday would remember he would eat there a lot and eat his fries after he ate whatever it came with. Anyway that was the only place where you could get American style pancakes. I ate there many times - guessing they may not be there any more.

What are your thoughts on Japanese pancakes? I’ve seen many places downtown offering them, tried them myself and wasn’t impressed…

I don't know what they are. I attached a photo of what American pancakes look like. Served with butter and maple syrup.

I know what they look like thank you…
I didn't post it for you. I posted for others reading this thread because American pancakes are not known at many or most Montreal restaurants and they will try to make the above with crepe batter, which is not possible. This post was for them.

But you’ve quoted me which made me thought you were directing it at me…

There is one on de Maisonneuve/de la Montagne.

Not good, in the same category there’s a Ben et Florentine right behind the Sport Expert that’s on Ste-Catherine and Mansfield. Also not that great

I quoted you because you brought up Japanese pancakes and although I have not had them, they appear in photos totally different than American pancakes and since you added a new layer of confusion, I then had to post a photo of American pancakes so the locals know what I am talking about. As I said two times already many people in Montreal have no clue what American pancakes are so the photo shows them what they look like.

They are amazing but I have yet to find a place in Montreal that makes them properly.

My favourite chain is Allô mon Coco, but rarely visit chain restaurants. Their patates-maison are delicious though!

I want to try Millmans, a restaurant in Verdun. Though not a long menu, they're known for their pancakes—let us know.

Cartet, on McGill, is fancier, but it was my go-to when I lived in the area.

Régine was mentioned, a true brunch spot, Janine is the sister restaurant.

Sylar I had never heard of them before reading this thread, but in Googling them I see photographs that show wide variance. Does this accurately represent the authentic version? I note that they have egg whites as a principal ingredient and as such more of a protein dish than American pancakes, which are really carbs, although they do contain eggs and milk. Is it soy sauce or a maple syrup they are topped with?

I think most Canadians know what American pancakes look like.
Deny’s or IHOP lol. and all other breakfast joints in the US.
I actually prefer crepes but make them myself as I like them as they make them in Eastern Europe with their traditional fillings/toppings.
