For cash purposes I have found that having a Bank of America account is the best way to go. Simply walk into a Scotia Bank and there are no junk fees involved. If your using your credit card, Capital One doesn't have any additional fees for using your card in Canada.

Roger that.

And now, it seems that TD Bank is becoming another option.

Many credit cards charge a huge intrerest rate for Cash advances - like more than 20 percent or 1.75 percent per month. And the interest rate begins when you get the cash not when you get your statement. Better check the terms of your credit card, or you will pay more than those extra fees.

That's true. But I think he meant using a Capital One card to buy something in another country, not for cash advances. (i.e. buying a bucket of lard at IGA :p).

With most other credit cards, if you purchase something in another country, you will be charged a fee in addition to the transaction.

Best place to exchange US currency in Montreal

A good friend of mine who puts an emphasis on saving money has always told me that the best place to exchange currency is at a currency exchange counter located in Chinatown. He swears it's worth taking the trip there. I surfed there last night via Google street maps & it's located on St-Laurent, just off Rene-Levesque. Prior to posting this, i double-checked with him to make sure that this was indeed the place he regularly goes to whenever he's in Mtl, and he confirmed it.

It's about a block south of Cleo's, just past the arch located at the entrance into Chinatown. It's on the west side of the street, next to a chinese restaurant. From what i can see on the map, it's called 'Jade & Joyce Inc.' and the address is in the area of 1104 Boulevard St-Laurent.

Chinatown Exchange

I have been to the place Doc mentioned and I think they do have cheap rates but currency exchange is their secondary business. They also sell jewelry, which I think is their primary business. As I recall, for this reason, the front door is locked and you have to get buzzed in. If you are not Asian and/or look like a criminal, you may not be permitted entry. When I went there I was buzzed in, but I don't look like a criminal or armed robber. I am not sure if all of the other readers here can say the same thing.

Well, the Asians in that exchange place were not afraid of me. I was the only Caucasian person in the entire store including the customers who were mostly Asian buyers of cheap, gaudy jewelry. I am just not so sure they buzz everybody in with open arms. They obviously are afraid of being ripped off or robbed, or they would not have the front door locked during their normal hours of business.

What I meant was that if you use your Capital One Credit Card as as charge card, not for the cash advances. Doing that is going to be costly.
