Scouting Report:
Rockies: Francis was the Game 1 starter against Philly and figures to be the Game 1 starter on Thursday against Arizona, which should bode well for the Rockies. Francis is 7-2 in his career against the Diamondbacks with a 3.54 ERA in 14 starts. This season, he was 1-1 in three starts with a 2.84 ERA. His last start of the season came against the D-backs in a matchup against Game 1 counterpart Brandon Webb. Francis did not have his best stuff that day and was bested by Webb. It was the Rockies? only loss in their last 18 games. Francis was back to his usual self in Philly. He kept batters off balance and held the Phillies to two runs on four hits in six innings, both runs coming in the fifth on back-to-back homers from Aaron Rowand and Pat Burrell on high fastballs.
D-backs: Webb started Game 1 of the National League Division Series as well. He earned the win in that game when he allowed just one run on four hits over seven innings. The right-hander did not pitch well in his first five starts of the year against the Rockies. He changed that around, though, on Sept. 28 when he beat them, 4-2, at Coors Field to clinch the club's fourth NL West title in its 10-year history. Webb has put together the finest season of his career, setting highs in wins, innings pitched (236.1) and strikeouts (194). He tossed 42 scoreless innings from July 20 to Aug. 22, the longest streak in the Majors since Orel Hershiser set the MLB record of 59 in 1988. Webb has a devastating sinking fastball that is his primary pitch, but he also has a good curveball and this year has improved his changeup to the point where he has confidence to throw it at any time.
