BTW Jamie Moyer pitched in the majors until age 49 and was highly effective until age 45. I see Colon as the same very crafty kind of pitcher and he might be able to pitch effectively another 2 or 3 years.

Smuler,

That incident arose when Chapman's girlfriend, while in Miami with him, snooped on his phone and saw that which she wasn't supposed to see- probably, text messages or emails with a SOBE escort. An argument ensued. What happened next is classic he said, she said. I think that the relationship was over at that time much like Tiger Woods' was when he received 9 iron over the head as he was chased from his house. For her to exaggerate is in her best financial interest, as well as her attorney's. The civil case has to be postured.

Manfred can do whatever he wants, but where as here nothing can be proven, I am guessing there will be a light suspension for the sake of public relations. This is one reason why the Yankees will keep Miller and not trade him- he insures the bullpen.

Joe - this is true. That has been the problem with Kansas City. I often compared the Yankees pen to KC's and now you guys got Chapmen. With the Tigers it was always the other way. You had the 8th and 9th inning to beat them.

BTW - what do you guys think of Wilson who we just acquired from the Yankees?

Murderer's Throw!

Nasty Boys in NYC!!! Gotta think of some nicknames for this trio of studs:

Betances-7th inning
Miller- 8th inning
Chapman- 9th inning

Brian Cashman has shown the last few seasons that he is indeed a very good GM, this is on paper, a excellent trade. This addition has put the Yanks as serious contenders for the AL East crown in 2016.

As it stands on this day.....

Wilson is a 7th inning guy. He is a fairly hard throwing lefty and you always like to have one of those around. He is not elite. He is just a solid guy who gives you a lefty body before your setup man and closer.

Elite is 3 100 strikeout relievers in one bullpen. ESPN is reporting that the Yankees are the first team in MLB history to have 3 guys with 100 strikeout relief seasons coming out of the bullpen. I actually thought the Yankees were the first team to have two with Betances and Miller last year. Now it is the trifecta.

Lots of punch outs are going to be happening in the 7th, 8th and 9th innings of Yankees games next year. Can you say "strike 3!!!"

My guess is that they'll trade Andrew Miller. He and his agent aren't too happy about being demoted to the role of set-up. Betances isn't happy either. He knows he could be the closer on any other team in baseball. It hurts their future earnings and especially their ego.

I'm curious how Chapman will perform in the AL. The reason i say this is that i have zero faith in any NL pitcher coming to the American League. Many have seen their stats blow-up when leaving the NL for the AL. Teams like the Blue Jays absolutely love hitting fastballs, and of course they'll be looking forward to facing Chapman.

Nobody will look forward to facing Chapman. The 64 fastest pitches in MLB last season, all over 102 mph, were all thrown by Chapman. His strikeouts totals are ridiculous. It's one thing to be able to hit average MLB fastballs but Chapman has the best fastball in the game.

Regarding Miller his contract doesn't change. His Twitter posts indicate he is ecstatic to set up a guy like Chapman. These guys are all main man relievers so it doesn't matter who pitches what inning. They know they are all main man relievers, and so do the fans.

Miller is also insurance against whatever suspension Chapman gets, so he can't be traded.

Wilson was a very good pitcher in pinstripes, definately a upgrade on Detroits pen.

The Detroit Pen has been among the leagues worst for several years. I had been tracking BP stats and they were in the bottom three of nearly every category. I was listening to the talking heads on MLB radio and they said that the pen is a crap shoot. You don't know what yoour going to get a former GM said. I would say that is probably true to a degree but the Tiger's pen has been awful. I remember losing 3 straight to Baltimore in the playoffs 2 years ago. Baltimore had the nerve to have a photo of the 3 Cy Young pitcher's Jersys hanging in the locker room (Scherzer, Verlander, and Price). Baltimore swept Detroit in 3 games. After each win they would draw a circle with a line through it over the Jersey of the Cy Young winner that started the game. Here's the problem: The Tigers were leading each time they went to the pen in the late innings. They should have had a picture of Joba Chamberlein's jersey and drawn a circle with a line through it.

Anyway, this is my problem with Dombrowski. He never successfully fixed the BP issue. All his attempts were futile. Nathan was a disaster. I hope Willson and K-Rod and the set up man they picked up can turn the tide because our pen has been awful.

Yankees’ trade for Chapman criticized by New York politician

Urging the Yankees to reconsider, Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito accused the Yankees of ‘condoning’ domestic violence.

by Matthew Chayes and Emily Ngo, Newsday

The leader of the New York City Council says she is “very disturbed” by the Yankees' completing a trade for Aroldis Chapman, the Cincinnati Reds' all-star closer under investigation for domestic violence.

Major League Baseball and Florida prosecutors are looking at allegations that Chapman pushed and choked his girlfriend, and fired eight gunshots in the garage of his Miami-area house in October.

Urging the Yankees to reconsider, Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito accused the Yankees of “condoning this kind of violence when you bring him on to be part of this team.”

“I think it was really wrong of the Yankees to have signed this guy on. We all want the Yankees to do well —but at the expense of what, right?” said Mark-Viverito, a Democrat who represents parts of Manhattan and the Bronx. She spoke with reporters after attending an NYPD graduation ceremony at Madison Square Garden.

Florida state prosecutors said they would consider criminal charges against Chapman, a Cuban defector whose 103-mph fastball is the major league's fastest, after a police report about the alleged violence by the four-time all-star leaked to Yahoo Sports earlier this month.

News of the allegations stymied an earlier trade between the Reds and Los Angeles Dodgers, but the Yankees chose to acquire Chapman for four minor leaguers.

“Given the circumstances that currently exist, the price point on acquisition has, you know, been modified; we're acquiring him understanding that there are some unresolved issues,” said Yankees general manager Brian Cashman after the trade was announced Monday.

The Yankees did not immediately respond to calls for comment on Mark-Viverito's remarks.

Mayor Bill de Blasio did not condemn the trade when asked about it later Tuesday, saying instead that he must “respect the judicial process.”

“I think the Yankees often make controversial moves, and sometimes they don't pay off, but this one's too early to tell,” said de Blasio, an avowed Red Sox fan

I am looking forward to watching Chapman pump 102 mph fastballs past the aging, sluggish bat of David Ortiz. I wonder how many 3 pitch strikeouts we will see from Chapman on the season? I can still remember when Damaso Marte struck out the side of Phillies in the 2009 World Series, on 9 pitches. I wonder if me might see 9 pitch side strikeouts by Chapman, maybe even more than one. Maybe we can even see him and Miller do it two innings in a row?

I'd be very surprised if Chapman repeated his success in the American League. I don't have a very high opinion of National League pitchers. Chapman, the wife beater, might be in for quite an awakening once he starts trying to get his fastballs past American League hitters.
