British government agency responsible for cyber security on Thursday accused a group of hackers of attacking organizations working on a vaccine against the new coronavirus in order to steal their research, claiming that it is "almost certain" that they are operating for Russian intelligence.

According to the National Cyber Security Center (NCSC), these cyber attacks, still in progress, mainly target British, American and Canadian organizations.

The Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine has made the most headway so far and will most likely be the first to make it to market. That being said, there are some reports that it may only provide temporary protection (up to a year). If this is true, it would be a good stop gap until a more efficacious vaccine emerges.

The next candidate that is not too far behind Oxford’s and will be heading into phase III clinical trials next week is Moderna’s. This vaccine is based on a totally new method involving mRNA. No vaccine to date has used this method but early data is promising. Moderna’s vaccine may provide better protection, but we’ll have to see what their next set of data shows.

The main thing the scientific community is worried about with a “rushed” vaccine is the problem of antibody dependent enhancement. This is where the vaccine actually causes the disease to be worse in people that are vaccinated vs people who are exposed naturally. This happened with the Dengue vaccine some years back.

Moderna hasn’t released any info on the CD8+ T cell response to their vaccine. Their chief medical officer said they’re unsure of the role they play in fighting the virus. Most likely their vaccine only causes antibody production if they’re saying that. But who knows..

The side effect profile I found was kinda high for the Moderna vaccine. Majority of the subjects developed fever, chills, headache in like a viral syndrome type of effect. That’s a lot dude I think they mentioned 20 something. Hopefully the kinks get worked out

Yes, huge safety concerns about the ‘rushed vaccine’. Currently the coronavirus vaccine is the biggest prize in the medical industry with even governments jumping onto the bandwagon to be the first to introduce a vaccine. Last week, a top Russian official claimed to be able to introduce one by September.

With so much political & economic pressure, will the regulators be forced or incentivized to approve an unsafe vaccine?

All that’s needed is one bad apple to taint the pool & turn people against all vaccines. We have been vaccinated all our lives, when was the last time that any of us asked the doctor what type of vaccine was being administered?

Vaccination is unquestionably one of the most economically cost-effective public health interventions of modern times.

In addition to the gains in treatment costs, vaccination has larger and wider economic implications.

It protects against the long-term effects of a disease on the physical and mental well-being of people, and therefore on their
ability to follow education or training or to exercise a professional activity.

This protection represents an invaluable benefit for the individual and for society in terms of capacity, productivity and growth gains.

In other words, vaccination avoids death and disability while being much cheaper than treatment, for the benefit of the individual and of society as a whole.
Effective health policies, as well as their funding, should be seen as an investment, not an expense.

Health strengthens economy, while illness weakens the economy.

In fact, hundreds of billions have already been spent.

The run for the Covid-19 vaccine is advancing, with the results of clinical trials still preliminary but encouraging on two projects - one British, the other Chinese. Published Monday, July 20 in the British medical journal The Lancet, these vaccine projects generate "a strong immune response" and are well tolerated by patients.

The first, developed by the University of Oxford in partnership with pharmaceutical group AstraZeneca, generated the production of antibodies and T cells, two types of immune responses, in a clinical trial involving more than 1,077 patients.

The second project, carried out in Wuhan (China) by researchers from several organizations, including the Military School of Medical Sciences, and funded by the Hong Kong-listed biotechnology group CanSino Biologics, also resulted in this double immune response against the coronavirus in most participants, according to a separate trial involving around 500 people.

It’s probably being tested on weegers in Chinese concentration camps and prisoners, and I’m sure they are doing some level of covid challenge testing in these places. It will probably be given to their politicians and health care workers when they get the kinks worked out. You are right Donbush, Trump is willing to do anything to win his election.

Anyway, the earliest we could get a vaccine is in October, if certain procedures are said to be "forgotten".

At that time there will be maybe 160,000-170,000 dead, I hope the Americans don't fall for it.

STN, part of the reason why the flu vaccine isn’t as effective as other vaccines is because there are many different strains of influenza out there. The flu vaccine only has 4 different strains in it. The manufacturers basically just guess which strains will be most prevalent that upcoming flu season. Like the NFL draft, it’s really a crapshoot.

Vaccines by AstraZeneca/Oxford, Moderna, Pfizer/BioNTech have all gone into crucial Phase 3 trials. It’s likely that no vaccine will be 100% protective, the FDA has set a benchmark of 50% but the way I see it is even if it’s 20-30%, many people including myself will go for it. So long as it’s completely safe or at least 99+% safe. I’ll even take all three vaccines that offer only 20-30% protection, why not? The vaccines r likely to be free so all it will cost is some time & minor discomfort to get partial protection. Still a great tradeoff.
