ouff it's getting hard to watch loss after loss, maybe its time for a real reconstruction for this team, lets keep five or six players that we want to build around and for the rest lets trade for young prospects and draft pics.

This probably should have happened in the off-season but management was duped into thinking that making the Stanley Cup finals meant that Montreal was the second best team in hockey and no changes were necessary. Apparently so were some fans. Realistically it was only because of Covid impacts on playoff formats that Montreal even made the playoffs each of the last 2 seasons. There is a tendency in all sports to overrate the performance of a weak regular season team that performs well in the playoffs, and Habs management fell into this trap. They believed the team was outstanding and would keep playing like it did in the playoffs last year.

As far as your suggestion that the Habs "blow it up", I agree. It should have happened sooner. The problem with blowing it up now, however, is that Bergevin then admits he fucked up in his preseason analysis of the team. Bergevin has pride. And you know what they say about pride:

Not just with the Habs, but with other sports teams, the media doesn't usually talk much about repeated poor and unproductive drafts. But I would suggest there has also been a poor drafting philosophy. For many years it seems emphasis was placed on players who were small, fast and gritty, and the Habs seem like they have been a team of undersized forwards for years. At what point do you say let's draft some bigger power forward types so we can score some goals off rebounds? Even their own player, Drouin, was publicly critical of the team's inability to establish player presence in front of the net so rebounds can be converted into goals. Sometimes you have to listen and pay attention to these things.

Yeah but Montréal seems to be worst
There was a article about it a few days ago ...

They don't develop well
To develop you need good player to show the younger the way.

There best talent Suzuki was draft by Vegas ...

There best player is a goalie ..
There is not that much talent in Laval
except to Caufield

Laval team was not so great
Bouchard that was supposed to be a great coach never made the playoffs
They had a good Covid season last year
In the Canadien Division. But last year the team could keep a extra number of player because of the Covid , so they kept their ace player with their Nhl team , so it had an impact on the player available.

Drouin was trade for Sergachev ...
Just look what happend to Kk ...

Alan,

All good points. The one thing I will say is I did not like the Drouin trade at the time it was made. Drouin had lots of problems in TB, was viewed as an underachiever and also a locker-room cancer. The underachievement was concerning although he was a young player and some times guys flourish with a change of scenery. Although Sergachev was an unproven but highly drafted prospect at the time, I think TB won that trade.

Which 5? Do the Canadiens even have a single player who would make the first line on any team with a winning record?

I would agree with you that you can't get to 5, but I can get to 3. I would keep:

Suzuki (12 points in 14 games)
Drouin (7 points in 11 games)'
Caulfield (based on youth and potential)

Everyone else can be let go.

I didn't say that the Canadiens had nobody worth keeping, only that there was nobody who play on the first line of a winning team in the NHL (To be precise, I would have added "now"). Caulfield, according to the Canadiens' management, isn't good enough to play on the fourth line of his own team (now). He was sent down to the minors.

However, I admit that I slightly exaggerated. Suzuki might, for example, be barely good enough to play on the first line of Tampa (since Kucherov is out).

It was bobbyc who said let's keep 5 or 6 guys, and blow up the rest of the team. You said I can't find 5. I agreed with you and said I could find just 3 (Suzuki, Drouin, Caulfield). Is there an agreement on my 3 and let's blow up the rest of the team?
