But I also know government changed a few things these past years concerning coffee shop and maybe prostitution…

Thanks for your replies all, this is kinda what I had feared about Amsterdam… figured somebody might know how best to steer away from the worst of the B&S and other crap. Not really opposed to CBJ / non GFE action if it has other redeeming qualities (like greek).

Seriously though...I'd be hella careful about any recreational drugs while travelling. Could be part of a setup where the staff collude with the police and you could get in deep, deep trouble.
1 or 2 places I'm OK with - Lombok used to sell mushrooms/xtc openly during rave festivals and 1,001 travellers were enjoying themselves. If you were picked up by police, then you have the worst luck in the world.

You’re right about it. Add the fact that these con artist can drug you, you pass out and they steal everything you got and drop your bloody corpse in a ditch. Okay maybe I watched too much gang movies but I’ll be afraid to do such things overseas
Always wanted to visit CR but what are the rates like? What about overnight TLN rates?
I was thinking of Bogota but there have been some recent reports of drugging so I'm a bit wary.
Speaking of Bogota, I was thinking of visiting Colombia and more specifically, Cartagena, Colombia but I'm too paranoid of getting drugged or robbed or lose a kidney if I go there.
I have a friend who recently moved to Cartagena and he wants me to come down.
CTG has a much better reputation than BOG, and since your buddy is there, why not give it a shot?

Btw ... I noticed Air Transat is offering direct flights to Cartagena from Montreal but it's only seasonal til end of March.
Colombian school holidays are in June and then's when college girls from Medellin or Bogota hang out in CTG to make some extra cash for the new school year. Or so I've been told. Your buddy might be more in the know.
Just be prepared for some real heat and humidity, CTG is right on the coast.
You should visit your friend in Cartagena. It's hot as hell and pricey but definitely worth a visit. Medellin is my favorite city in Colombia The weather is Spring-like all year, and the women are plentiful and available. Plus Medellin is not expensive compared to Cartagena and the exchange rate is very favorable. Stay at Hotel M - the gringo bed, breakfast, and bordello. You'll be safe there.
It is, but if you're staying with a friend that makes the trip much more affordable. And it's a short, cheap flight from there to Medellin.
The hotels inside the walled city and in the tourist areas are expensive. I'm sure there are budget hotels or airbnb options just not sure about safety. Your friend should be able to suggest a safe neighborhood. Buena suerte.
Not really. The criminals want your pesos and jewelry not your kidney. You do have to be careful of not having someone lace your drink with scopolamine or being robbed at gunpoint by a motorcyclist. Stay in well-traveled tourist areas, be alert, never take your eyes off your drink and you'll be fine.
