I remember a year or two ago when some Habs fans were making fun of the Leafs being an old & slow team. No more!!! The Leafs are young, fast, tough, skilled & will scrap with anyone other teams throw at them. No one will dare push around their smaller, skilled players, knowing full well Ron Wilson will send out an army of tough guys to take care of business if that every happens! The Leafs have one top player who could be considered up there in age, and that's Jason Blake. But Blakie is still one of the fastest players on the team & can still score. He'll be relied upon for his leadership more than ever now. Watch out folks, the Leafs mean business & not a single team will take them lightly this season. Habs fans, be afraid! Be very afraid!!

63 games after this insightful nugget was posted by the biggest ass clown on this board, the Leafs sit one place out of the NHL crapper with a 19W and 44L record - you lose again fool!

Burke Has Re-Made Leafs RosterThursday, 04.03.2010 / 11:33 AM / Mike Ulmer's Blog By Mike Ulmer - Mapleleafs.commentator The trade deadline has passed and the Leafs roster, if anything, is weaker today than yesterday.

When Brian Burke first sat down in the Big Chair on November 29, 2008 everyone knew what they were getting.

Burke would follow his vision with the zeal of an evangelist. He would do things his way and since that had resulted in a Stanley Cup in Anaheim and a revival in Vancouver, his way looked awfully good.

He has not strayed, not in committing two first-rounders and a second to land a player he considered a sure thing in Phil Kessel nor in landing Jean-Sebastien Giguere, an expensive goalie who had lost his job in Anaheim but who had a Stanley Cup ring.

There’s no denying that things look very dark indeed right now. The Leafs are last in the East with a shot at finishing last overall and gifting the rights to Taylor Hall or Tyler Sequin to Boston. And while the team has accrued a stable of young players: Luke Schenn, Kessel, Tyler Bozak, Jonas Gustavsson, Carl Gunnarsson, Christian Hanson, Viktor Stalberg, Dion Phaneuf and now, 21-year-old Luca Caputi, few save for Phaneuf will be stepping up and grabbing the reins of the team soon.

Until the Leafs become competitive again, the focus of the Leafs limitless fandom will settle on the shoulders of the guy pulling the levers.

Now you may argue with the Burke’s decisions, particularly the one that brought Kessel here. Bear in mind, that’s a beef raised mostly in hindsight since the airwaves were not filled with people complaining about the cost when the deal was made.

You may quibble with devoting a roster spot and a $1 million to Colton Orr, the kind of one dimensional enforcer from which the game seemed to be moving away.

Maybe you wanted to keep Matt Stajan or think Burke should have hardballed Tomas Kaberle.
But there is one fact beyond dispute. The guy never lied.

He said he would rebuild from the crease out. Vesa Toskala will report to his third team of the season today.

He said he wanted a bigger and tougher defence. In came Mike Komisarek and then Phaneuf.

He said the captaincy of the Toronto Maple Leafs was one of the most important positions in sport and he would not move to fill it until he found the right man. Still no guy.

He said he would move players. Gone from the beginning of the season are seven regulars: Nik Hagman, Jamal Mayers, Ian White, Matt Stajan, Alexei Ponikarovsky, Lee Stempniak and Vesa Toskala.

He said he would use every avenue to find talent. He signed Gustavsson out of Sweden and mined the U.S. collegiate systems for free agents Hanson and Bozak. He ponied up the draft choices for Kessel.

You can argue that while the Leafs are bigger, they aren’t the man-eating tribute to truculence Burke promised. Burke says he will keep moving players until he gets 20 guys who want to win as much as he does. He has been on the job about 15 months.

And while Burke has never cottoned to the idea of a five-year rebuilding plan, he never said it would take a season and a half to turn the corner.

So here is what you are left with. The moves have been about what was expected. The immediate results are still meagre, a golden future of Kadri goals and Gustavsson saves, well over the horizon.

But there is one more indisputable fact: the guy has never failed. Not as a GM in Anaheim and Vancouver, not as a league official, not at Harvard Law.

It comes down to a question of faith governed by cold math. When calculating the future with no real data available, bet on what you know. Put your money on the guy who has never failed

The way Lucic has been carrying on this season, i wouldn't have been surprised if Komisarek won their fight if it would have happened. Lucic simply isn't the same player he used to be. I actually liked him as a player last season. He reminded me of a young Wendel Clark in his better days. And now.......what a disappointment.

Same with Komisarek. He's never been the same since Lucic rang is bells last year. And if they drop the mitts again I would still bet on Lucic.

funny what a change of jersey does isnt it? when Lucic beat him in that fight, habs fans didnt have a word to say, and now that Orr clearly beat Lucic, still no "CLASSY" comments from habs fans, but their the first to say Komi took a beatdown, why is that Cosmo? you have class dont you? ;)

Hello everyone,

Could someone please explain to me what has happened in this thread? It was my understanding that this thread was intended to be for serious hockey discussion but I have noticed that the tone of many posts here hardly live up to that level. At the moment there are numerous hockey threads active on MERB and not one of them is being used for serious discussion.

If this continues, this thread will be closed and I will have to reconsider the amount of latitude that is currently allowed in all sports threads. Members have the right to post their opinions without being subjected to insults and flame posts.

I would also like to add that this includes using the correct names of the teams instead of the terms commonly used here such as 'Laffs' and 'Scabs' Copy and paste posts from other sports forums should also be made in the other threads, not here. Keep the locker room attitudes for the other threads. If I see this thread start to degrade again, all the hockey threads will be closed and stiff moderation will be applied to the Sports Forum as a whole.

PLEASE DO!!!!!!!!!! I've long thought the nonsense in these threads needed reigning in whether it's baseball, hockey, or whatever. As one of the guilty parties in the baseball thread I can say the tone if these threads are an embarrassment and a disgrace. Three hockey threads to bitch and insult each other! DAMN! Please bring everyone back to the same standards for the rest of the board. There's no excuse in any sports thread for such continuous over the top pure crap.

Cheers,

Merlot

I agree that the name-calling & insults have crossed the line at times, but it's nothing compared to some of the things being said between posters in the baseball threads over the past two years.

If the rules will include ALL of the sports threads, not only hockey, i totally agree with you. It all started in the baseball threads (especially the Joe T one) two years ago & the insulting & trash-talking kind of took off & took a life of their own from that point, resulting in some of the b.s. being hurled at one another in non-baseball sports threads. But if the warnings are only for the hockey threads, then i object. By the way, i see no harm in members using their own nicknames in regards to other teams, as long as it's not directly towards the members. I've been guilty of name-calling myself, but 90% of the time, it was in retalation to personal attacks/derogatory names/insults hurled towards me.

Bruin Marc Savard taken off the ice on a stretcher after a cheap shot hit by Pittsburghs Matt Cooke. Savard was knocked unconscious for a short period. Amazingly, no penalty call on the play.

The NHL is to blame. The day they start prohibiting head shots for good (like in the NFL) is the day that head shots will be less & less. Many head shots are still tolerated as long as they're not being made by an elbow or foreharm, which is total bullshit. Shoulder pads today are made of kevlar & are as hard, if not harder, as elbow pads, which are made of the same material. One of these days, a superstar will see his career come to an end because of one of these head shots & that's the boneheads running the league will finally put an end to those cheap shots.

By the way, what has Gary Bettman ever done for the good of hockey? I honestly can't think of a single thing!

Yea, but as Mod8 said, there are other hockey threads that pretty much anything goes as far as a little ribbing here and there, but i agree , lets keep this one for real hockey chat like YOU intended

Anyways, the Leafs are finally playing very good Defense, but the youngsters need time to gel and see whats needed as far as forwards this offseason, should be a interesting July1, when Burke can start to spend some of the many millions he will have available for Free Agents, Patrick Marleau would be a great addition, as a former captain, he has leadership as well as can put the puck in the net and would also look good on a line with Mr. Kessel....

One of the pluses of being out of the playoffs at this time of the year is that the team can now play the kids & give them much-needed NHL experience in order to prepare them for next year. I don't know if they'll go after Patrick Marleau. My guess is that they won't & would rather concentrate on obtaining two quality & affordable free agents, as compared to one which will likely be getting offers in the $5-6 million range. They also will have a log-jam at the center position next season if Kadri makes the team. I'm certain they won't let Kadri start the season with the big club unless he's centering one of the top 2 lines. No use having youngsters like him & Bozak playing on the 3rd & 4th lines. The crop of upcoming free agents which would dramatically upgrade the Leafs is a poor one next season. It's quite possible that Burke will stay put or sign one moderately priced free agent & then sit on his millions under the cap until a great opportunity presents itself. He also could very well dangle Kaberle in order to get some help at the forward position. Don't be surprised if Kaberle isn't re-signed to a multi-year deal instead of spending the money on more than one or two moderately priced free agents.
