Why should he give them a hometown discount when he has to pay so much in taxes? If he had gone to Florida to play for the Panthers or Lightning, there is no income tax at all in Florida and he would have kept a few million extra in his pocket.

I totally agree with you. But it's been done in the past, for example, Martin Brodeur with the Devils. But the player rarely winds up winning when this happens. This is a business, after all. Now Brodeur still hasn't found a team that wants him and he could have earned more money had he gone on the market a few years ago.

Actually, he may. There's no guarantee that the habs will feel like honoring the entire lenght of the contract if they feel Subban isn't playing as good as they figure he will. They may very well trade him or buy him out in a few years.

I would not be surprised that a deal is made before her ruling.

I'm not sure, Iggy. Don Meehan said after the hearing that they will not be negotiating for a multi-year contract until the arbitration decision comes in.

As far as Meehan and what he "says" and what he actually "does" is anyones guess, afterall that is what agent's do best to drive up the price for their cleints.

I am not one to say I told ya so but.......

I love this contract and term lol and this aint gonna end well for the canadians long term :thumb:

Don Meehan is the smartest agent in sports! Bergervin thinks he has Brian Cashman money (which he doesnt) and is proving to be a softie when it comes to contract negotiations. First he gives lars eller that huge overpayment and now today with subban. To be fair, at least with subban he had no choice really but in both cases he gave more to the player than what they were asking for lol. I know it was long term but still, bergy is not the brightest tool in the shed it seems, was he a fighter as a player? One too many shots to the head?

And yet he's been a finalist for the Best GM the past 2 years, while the FORMER GM who fought so hard to have the GM award implemented was unceremoniously FIRED after 4 consecutive years of NOTHING but
complete, dismal failure in Toronto (carrying on what is now a 47 year tradition for that hapless franchise).

look on the bright side canadians fans, the cap should be going up a few million the next couple of seasons so "bergy" will also be able to overpay galchenyuk and gallagher as well. And trust me, "bergy" will :thumb: (if he is still there)

On another note, FINALLY Dion has a legit top 2/3 to play with now that he wont be paired with a 5d (lets be real about it) in Gunnarsson anymore. Gardiner or Robidas will likely be paired with Cap'n Canada and maybe even young gun Morgan Rielly down the road. It is amazing the slack this guy takes even tho he has not had a top pairing guy to play alongside him in years, meanwhile playing the most minutes every night and playing against the best players on other teams top 2 lines night after night as well as the stress of being captain in the #1 hockey market in the world. Glad to have Phaneuf in blue and white for the long haul.

"Cap'n (sic) Canada" - THAT'S a laugh: the guy wasn't even CONSIDERED for Team Canada. The Great Steve Yzerman and Doctor Babcock wanted to WIN, not LOSE (which is Dion's specialty).

And speaking of the Great Steve Yzerman: he just made another typically brilliant move with his economical signing of Bishop.

Beav, you do realise that JT is a Canadian that plays in the States, dont you?

Sort of like Phil Kessel, an American who plays in Canada..., for the Leafs (who made the playoffs only ONCE in the last decade, largely because of their EXTREMELY poor defense).

I see it is "groundhog day" again round these parts  Ya know, the more things change the more things stay the same.

Love the moves and changes the Leafs have made this offseason from the front office to behind the bench to drafting the electric future star in William Nylander to upgrading the bottom 6 (which will help the defence immensely) to adding 2 solid Dmen on the blueline while getting rid of 3 liabilities there, as well to likely adding a young defensive first guy in Petter Granberg (or another young Marlie ready to make the jump) to start the season. Needless to say, Nonis and Shanahan have been very very busy this summer.

Now all that is left to do is trade hometown boy Reimer to Winnipeg along with Franson, a prospect and a 3rd round pick for Evander Kane then sign Marty B cheap to mentor "Big Game" Bernier for a season and drop the puck! :thumb: (ok so that might take some demotions or other moves to fit Kane and Marty B under the cap but that is a job for the new whiz kid Dubas, earn your big salary, kid!)

It also looks like Colton Orr is on his way out. I figure he'll likely spend the season with the Marlies. As for Evander Kane with the Leafs, i doubt it'll happen. It'll take more than Reimer and Franson to get him to Toronto. Let's face it: nobody wants Reimer right now. They tried to trade him & there wasn't any interest. I'm also not sure Brodeur would want to join a team as a backup. He could have been a backup in New Jersey if he wanted.

Maybe a package of Franson, Kadri & Reimer could get Evander Kane to Toronto. But they'll probably ask for one more player, likely a highly-touted prospect.

At this point in time, I would not make Kadri part of that deal. Kadri has a TON of talent and I think now that Steve Spott is one of his coaches, it will do wonders for his development to take that next step up. Lots of guys do not become very good NHL'ers til later in their careers and Kadri already is a good player but with holes (that can be fixed) just look at the Sedins. I would not even trade Kadri for Kane straight up let alone include him in a deal unless more was coming back from Winnipeg besides just Kane.

I will not be sad to see Orr demoted and it pretty much has to be done. He does not even fight much anymore and with the additions of the added toughness and skill in Komorov and Winnik, it kind of makes Orr expendable. Love the guy but no room for him anymore, however Carlyle loves the guy but for Carlyle to keep his job he is gonna have to coach differently than he has in the past, that is obvious since Shanahan took over.

As far as Dion goes, when has he EVER had a true #2 defender to play along side him since he has been in Toronto? Let me help ya there, NEVER. He also plays against the best of the best every game night after night, logs more minutes than most dmen in the entire NHL and is Captain of the most legendary franchise in the NHL aka a ton of commitments every day of the season.

Finally he will have a better linemate this season although not sure a true #2 type guy yet at this point in Robidas or Gardiner, but possibly.
