Holy smokes! I just looked at the calendar and realized we're one day closer to the Leafs beginning their 48TH CONSECUTIVE YEAR OF FAILURE. How time flies!

P.K. Subban arbitration hearing

The habs were unable to convince P.K. Subban to sign their low-ball offer, so he took them to arbitration this morning. The hearing began at 9am and ended 90 minutes later. Prior to the hearing, they were about $3 million apart (per year). The majority of habs fans are extremely pissed off that the habs allowed the process to get this far. Fans are upset that the habs would attempt to low-ball their superstar and are afraid he'll sign with another team in two years as an unrestricted free agent.

I have no doubt that the arbitrator will either side with the Subban camp or go halfways. Subban was rumored to be asking $8.5 million, while the habs were low-balling him at $5.25 million.

That's what happens when you force the kid into signing a bridge contract!

I am not happy with the Canadians with the way they treated there star player P.K. Subban. I hope he gets close to what he asked for. Shame on MB. Imagine what he would have made as an unrestricted free agent. The arbitrator will probably go somewhere in the middle. 7 to 8 million. He will get a lot more than what the team offered.

I would not be surprised that a deal is made before her ruling. Subban while nowhere near being a complete dman (horrible at times on the defensive side and I believe in the top echelon of the league in giveaways) is a very important piece to the success of the canadians and therefore will get AT LEAST 7 mill (cap hit) per season and likely more on a long term deal. If it does go to a final decision with Liz, I could see him getting about the same on a one year deal, 6.5-7.5 mill next season on a one year deal.

I'm not sure, Iggy. Don Meehan said after the hearing that they will not be negotiating for a multi-year contract until the arbitration decision comes in.

Both parties are way too far apart in terms of $$. Plus the fact Bergervin thrashed PK during the hearing in order to prove the habs' point. PK seemed upset after the hearing, which isn't surprising. Heck, Mike Milbury once made Sami Salo cry during one of these hearings and nearly did the same thing to Ray Bourque at one time. Harry Sinden had to step in after the hearing and gave Bourque what he had wanted all along in order to maintain the peace between the organization and Bourque.

P.K. told the Toronto media the other day that he'd love to play for the Leafs one day. I also believe his gerat personality is a waste for the french Mtl market. He'd thrive in a market such as Toronto, New York, Chicago or LA. And i believe he knows it.

As for what the award will be, the habs are banking that the number will be at the halfway point. But don't bank on it. She may look at Ryan Suter and Shae Webber's numbers and give Subban the exact amount he asked for. She will also take into account that the cap has risen quite a bit since the time Webber and Suter signed their contracts.

As for why Bergervin would chose to lowball him him, many believe it's because he refuses to pay him more than their #1 player, Carey Price.

Personally I hope he gets awarded the canadians offer and he is pissed and wants out of Montreal. As far as Meehan and what he "says" and what he actually "does" is anyones guess, afterall that is what agent's do best to drive up the price for their cleints.

Interesting comment from local french media member Jean-Charles Lajoie this morning. He tweeted that the best move for the habs may be to trade Subban soon in order to get the maximum value for him. He added that the longer they wait, the lower his return will be. He also pointed out that any possible contract between the habs and Subban will include a non-movement clause, which will put the habs into a corner. They'll be stuck overpaying (in their minds) a player they can't trade unless he gives them permission to & he will basically get to chose where he wants to go.

It makes sense. Trading Subban now would guarantee the habs a huge return. And why not trade him if it's not their intention to pay him what he wants to be paid?

Here is another good article (with video) on the recent impasse between the two parties:

Trading Subban would be risky thing to do. I still remember chelios for savard trade. The team might not be able to get equal or greater value for him. Maybe the player wants to become unrestricted free agent and pick what team he would like to play for. Therefore if a another team does not think it can sign him to a long term contract, they will not offer much. Habs will lose on and off the ice. He is the team's most popular player. Many fans are angry with the team for making a low ball offer. Bad pr move. But there is a happy ending, they reached a deal Youppi!

It's all guaranteed money so if he gets injured he is all set:

http://espn.go.com/nhl/story/_/id/11300201/pk-subban-montreal-canadiens-agree-eight-year-extension

This is why Subban overruled his greedy agent who wanted a 4 year deal and then a bigger cut on the next deal when Subban becomes UFA at age 29. However it is not the agent who is putting his body out on the line on the ice game after game, and Subban figured that out. Now Subban is covered should he have an injury like Paul George experienced last night.

EB, Don Meehan is the best agent in the business. I really doubt Subban actually overuled him on anything. Meehan wanted to go 8 years all along, but the habs didn't want to pay him what he felt his client would get on the free market in two years, especially with the cap likely rising to $80 million in two years.

The habs also had to overpay him by about $1 million more per season in order to get him to stay in Quebec, which has the highest tax bracket of all professional teams.

The habs would have preferred to give him around $7 million per season (from what i heard) on a long-term contract in order to be on a similar level as say, Drew Doughty. However, Doughty signed his contract earlier on when the rules were different and Subban signed after being forced into signing a bridge contract. Mtl didn't want to take account of this & the fact the cap was expected to rise every year until Subban's UFA year, which was in two years.

When the habs realized Subban was intent on getting what he felt he deserved & would walk in order to get it, they realized he'd never give them a hometown discount (as the habs expected him to do) and lost the game of chicken.

Now Subban's new contract is taking a hell of a chunk of the salary cap this season (the cap is around $70 million) and now the habs don't have much room to manoeuver and still have a few players left to sign.

Why should he give them a hometown discount when he has to pay so much in taxes? If he had gone to Florida to play for the Panthers or Lightning, there is no income tax at all in Florida and he would have kept a few million extra in his pocket.

Derek Jeter did not give the Yankees a hometown discount on his last contract, so if the Yankees don't get a hometown discount from Jeter, why should the Habs get one from Subban?

8 years / $72M for Subban. 3rd highest paid player in the NHL according to SC.

It's also the largest contract in habs history. Wow!!! Now the habs will be scrambling to find some cap space in order to sign a few more players.

Next season, Galchenyuk, Gallagher and Bournival will be RFA. So that'll take more money from the cap. I wonder if the habs will have learned their lesson and possibly bypass the bridge contract and sign them to longer, more lucrative deals in order to avoid the same situation they've just gone through with Subban.
