meanwhile, back in that once decent city, now a dump known as detroit, the red wings gave old and broken down dan cleary 1.5 million to play below average hockey for them (once agan) if he is not injured all season. They would be better off if he was injured.

I wasn't even aware he was still playing professional hockey. Who's next? Daniel Alfredsson?

The "rival GM" was using something called sarcasm. You can find a definition in any dictionary.

The NON-sarcastic TRUTH is that Toronto is the centre of hockey FAILURE. (Hint: 47 YEARS and counting.)

Toronto might be a failure Hockey wise on the ice but as for business stand point, they make Forbes magazine number 1NHL franchise
http://www.forbes.com/sites/forbespr/2013/11/25/forbes-announces-2013-nhl-team-valuations/,
there is a meaning to it ,I am not a TO fan but they are doing somethings right !!!!

You make an extremely valid point. If there was no money to be made, there wouldn't be an NHL.....there wouldn't be any professional hockey. Hockey fans seem to forget the fact that hockey is a business. An entertainment business for profit. As long as the bottom line looks good & lucrative, the billionaires don't really care that much what a team's win/loss column looks like. It's all about making money & more money, and making believe hockey fans that hockey is a part of their culture.

George Gillette made a fortune with the habs in a short amount of years & got out when he felt his potential earnings had reached its peak.

That's why a team such as the habs decides to get rid of two heart n' souls types such as Brian Gionta & Josh Gorges: they were costing the organization money.

Could be worse: they could be on the hook for MANY years for MANY millions for a trio of super-stiffs like Phaneuf, Kessel and Clarkson.

Detroit is going for their 24th consecutive year in the playoffs while hogtown is desperately - and undoubtedly FUTILELY - hoping to fluke its way in for only the second time in a freakin' DECADE. More likely, the stinkin' leafs will just move one step closer to a HALF CENTURY without even making the finals. No doubt whatsoever that the leafs are the biggest joke and the biggest failure in all of professional sports.

Well we know it won't be Robidas since he left the seniors residence (or was it the hospital, after his LATEST major injury?) to sign a THREE year contract with the biggest joke in hockey.

Yep, they sure ARE a gigantic failure hockey-wise....and what they are "doing right" is selling buckets of Koolaid to their gullible "fans" who just can't guzzle down enough of the stuff!

I am surprised the PK thing has dragged on this long. No offer sheet? That is bizarre , if Montreal thinks they will get a home town discount they are wrong. Show PK the money!

Adding Polak and Robidas and getting rid of Gleason and Hopefully Franson is a big step forward

Looks like your wish didn't come true. Toronto just took a huge step BACKWARD by signing this stiff Franson to a new contract with a big fat raise. I guess they figured his MINUS TWENTY (!!!!!!) last year deserved it.

Here comes the 48TH CONSECUTIVE YEAR of FAILURE!

At least the Leafs did something during this off-season, as opposed to the Red Wings, who are still waiting for Alfie to make up his mind if he's retiring or not.

But it's not surprising why so many players have refused to play in Detroit. It's no wonder Mike Babcock no longer wants to coach there. The arena is one of the worse in hockey and Detroit is one of the worse places to live in. Look for yourself:

Detroit: absolutely dreadful place

On another note, i finished reading Jeremy Roenick's autobiography yesterday and near the end of the book, there is a mention of Mike Babcock where Roenick had once said to the media that the reason Chris Chielios wasn't playing much under Babcock was because Babcock was anti-American and preferred playing European and Canadian players ahead of Americans. Any truth to this?

Plans for the new Detroit arena to open in 2017, looks pretty awesome!!

They were talking about it yesterday on Primetime Sports and it's already creating a lot of controversy in Detroit considering the city is bankrupt & there are over 90 000 abandoned homes in the area. People are wondering why tax money is being used to finance such a project when instead the money could be used to help its own suffering people.

Fucking bureaucracy!

The llitch family should have spent some of that money it will take to build a new arena on spending it to make a decent tasting pizza (after one slice you are ready to throw the rest in the garbage) little caesers pizza sucks and tastes like cardboard after one slice. No wonder they sell so much of it at Comerica, it is sold by the SLICE!

Doc, (about anti american coaches) does this mean when "Babs" comes to Toronto after his contract with the things runs out that he is gonna bench Kessel and JVR ..........

Well if Doctor Babcock ever lost his mind and went to a "team" with a half-century of nothing but COMPLETE FAILURE on its resumé, he might be able to salvage at least a little of his reputation by permanently benching that one-trick pony.

Best wishes to Dave Nonis: let's hope he's saving up to buy a one-way bus ticket out of town and let's also hope that he finds someone VERY VERY IMAGINATIVE to write up a good resumé and help him with his upcoming job search.

Not so fast on nonis the new guy needs to get his feet wet. Brian Burke will hire him when he is made available . But it will not be on merit.
