Did Babe ever pitch again after he became a Yankee? Was he ever used as a spot starter or a reliever?
Very little.

Just look how much baseball changed during the 60's? Should we put an asterik by McClains 31+1 WS victory because of all the cortisone shots?
Well, cortisone is a steroid.

Yes, that article I quoted mentions Babe's pitching stats for the Yankees. He did not pitch much but pitched well when he did.
The Babe was 5-0 as a Yankee with a 5.52 ERA. Total of 5 games and 31 innings.

Do you guys know about http://www.baseball-reference.com? The stuff they have there and the ability to use is to search and analyze is astounding.

I was just reading about Denny McClain of the 68 Tigers. Denny won 31 games that year and was 1 - 2 in the World Series winning game six. Denny had a sore arm and was getting 3-5 cortisone shots per month. He received a cortisone shot for each game in the 68 World Series. Incidentally, 68' was the year of the pitcher. After the controversy of Roger Maris’s breaking the Babe's HR record, MLB increased the strike zone from the knees to the shoulders. 338 shutout were thrown and only one player (Yastrimski) hit over .300 during the1968 season. In 69' the strike zone was modified to increase offensive output and the mound was lowered from 15" to 10". McClain was traded to the Senators and he criticized manager Ted Williams because of the new strategy employed by the Senators for starting pitchers. Ted employed a 5-man rotation which was a new concept.

Just look how much baseball changed during the 60's? Should we put an asterik by McClains 31+1 WS victory because of all the cortisone shots?

I have game 1 of the 1968 World Series on a VHS tape from when the game was replayed on ESPN Classic. What made McLain unusual as a pitcher was an odd, high and sudden leg kick, causing a jerky delivery which threw hitters off and probably also fucked up McLain's arm. In that World Series game, Bob Gibson struck out a World Series record 17 batters. This included Willie Horton for the last out on a pitch that looked like a whiffle ball frisbee- it looked like it would hit Horton, and then floated over the outside corner as Horton flinched and stepped in the bucket. Tim McCarver, who was the catcher, said that Horton grunted anticipating the ball was going to hit him, flinched, and then the ball just barely hit the outside corner of the plate.

As I recall McLain was kind of wild that game, and may have been struggling with his control due to arm issues.

Several weeks earlier McLain had served up the legendary deliberately grooved pitch which Mickey Mantle hit for his last Yankee Stadium home run. McLain later admitted grooving the pitch and also to tipping Mantle that the pitch would be grooved, but pointed out that Mantle still had to supply the power and hit the ball out, which he did.'

Tigers were up 6-0 in the 8th inning, I believe, when that home run ball was served to Mantle. It was old school baseball. The Tigers knew they had the win and wanted Mantle to leave the game with some dignity and honor, as in truth he was terrible his last season with the Yankees.

If you look at Ruth's stats it looks like he was transtioning to position player while still with the Red Sox. Look at Ruth's innings pitched and at bats the last two years with the Red Socks compared to the previous 3 years with the Sox.

McClains sore arm was due to all the innings. Supposedly, he is the poster child for the modern day pitch count. He had a great pitching coach in Johnny Sain so I don't think it was his motion. The cortisone shots gaurenteed his arm would soon be ruined. I heard McClain on a radio talk show. He said he had no idea he was ruining his arm with the cortisone shots. He said "we thought we were making it better."

I can barely remember him but he was a real horse’s ass and a real dirt ball. During his playing days he was also suspended for gambling. He made a bunch of stupid statments and missed the first 2 innings of the 69 all star game because of a dental appointment. This was a game he was slated to start. He later came back to Michigan to buy a meat packing company. He was later incarcerated for stealing from the company pension fund.

Yes, he was fined by the commissioner for that cookie he threw to Mantle. Pepitone was on deck and he asked for a cookie. McClain threw a fastball over his head.

Should we put an asterik by Mantles last HR?

You know, by the way, that there never was an asterisk put after Maris' 61 home runs. That's a myth.

I also remember a racketeering charge. (Like Lenny Dystra, McLain was a guy who had it made and blew it.)

They have been very forgettable.

Hello Hungry,

Ruth was a great pitcher. He was a career 67% winner as a pitcher and his ERA still ranks 16th best among all-time pitchers. For the Red Sox in 1916 he pitched 9 shutouts in one year a record that stood until Guidry broke it in 1978, and even though he wasn't a strike out pitcher he had an amazing 1.75 ERA in the same year. His World Series record of 29 2/3 straight scoreless innings stood for many years until 1960, and his total ERA in the Series overall was an amazing 0.87.

All that obviously put the Red Sox in a quandary since he was also an outstanding hitter. It's astounding to think about what the home run record would have been had Ruth started as a full time hitter after the Dead Ball Era and had 162 games each year. In 6 years as a pitcher he hit 49 home runs. Average those years to just 30 per year and it's easy to add 130 homers to his total.

Great game for the Jays tonight, but i must admit it was getting late and i left after 9 innings. I got to my room just in time to see Brett Lawrie's game-winning hit. By the way, this rookie Workman who pitched for the Red Sox looks like he'll be a good one. Very impressive & maybe John Farrell stuck too long with Lester. Mike Napoli hit his 6th homerun against the Jays this season. He hit it with 2-out and 1-on in the top of the 9th. He may only have 15 homeruns, but if this guy played the Jays year-round, he'd hit over 150 homeruns!

Unfortunately, the Doc missed Lawrie's hit as he was in the washroom peeing and checking to see if he could see his pecker. Sadly, after 6 dogs and 4 beers, he'd grown breasts and couldn't even see his belly.

Hey, what's going on here. The light hitting Yankees have a three game winning streak and Huey, Dewey, and Louie are still under the rock?

Actually, i did see Lawrie's walk-off game winner a few minutes after i stopped by HOOTERS. Leanne, my waitress, told me that he was her favorite baseball player and that he had stopped to eat there one time.

Tonight, he got another big hit, and the Jays once again beat the Red Sox, spoiling a strong performance by Jake Peavy.

The light hitting Yankees have just signed Mark Reynolds and his .215 batting average, .680 ops. The barrel is now empty; the light hitting Yankees have just scraped the bottom.

I loved his power when he played for the Orioles. I don't know what happened in Cleveland. Maybe he was just having a bad year.

As for A-Rod, i wouldn't be surprised if MLB is behind the whole thing to embarrass him. Sure, he's an a-hole & whatever you can think of. But MLB wanted him to be their poster-boy for their witch-hunt. If A-Rod got 211 games (or whatever the number was), how the hell does Ryan Braun only get 60-something games?? Braun not only tested positive, but made a farce of MLB's testing program & blalantly lied to the world after he got caught last year and got off on a technicality.

Has anyone caught in the BioGenesis sting ever test positive? I don't think so. So all it does is tell me that MLB's drug testing program is a joke!

The Yankees/Red Sox series should be great this weekend! :thumb:

The main issue, with A-Rod is, he tampered with MLB investigation,i.e. he tried to buy documents from BioGen and not because who is
