Totally happy with Mitch Marner as a Leaf! Great young prospect and a local boy to boot! Don Cherry must be a happy camper right about now.

I agree that Mitch Marner was a good pick for the leafs.

What I don't get is that Marner stands at 5'11" and the media consider him undersized !

I certainly would not consider him undersized would you ?

Great pick

What makes the Milan Lucic even more bewildering is that they also retained nearly $3 million of his salary. The money they saved also could have helped them re-sign Dougie Hamilton. Martin Jones is a good goaltending prospect and he wanted to be traded to a team where he could start. Many believe Boston will use either him, Subban or Rask in a trade with a team (maybe Edmonton?) looking for goaltending help.

Don Sweeney is getting roasted by the local media and fan base right now. One fan even wrote "It looks like Ben Cherington wandered into the wrong office again!"

Poor Claude Julien!

NY Rangers trade Carl Haglin to Ducks for Emerson Etem and their 2nd-round pick.

I've also learned that Cam Talbot is very likely to be dealt later to the Oilers.

Thank you Nostradamus

I've also learned that Cam Talbot is very likely to be dealt later to the Oilers.

just about the entire hockey world knew that would happen, and became a certainty when BUF acquired Lehner yesterday.

Edmonton Oilers Likeliest To Land Cam Talbot In Trade With NY Rangers;

A Cam Talbot trade seems certain to come to fruition soon and according to the last report it sounds like the Oilers and Sabres are the two teams most desperate to do a deal.

Brian Burke did it again! Can you say FLEECED????

Burke's a magician all right:

such a great magician that his Leafs NEVER made the playoffs during his tenure even though he repeatedly stated that it was ALWAYS his goal to make the playoffs;

such a great magician that his years were even worse than those under John Ferguson Jr.;

such a great magician that he was unceremoniously FIRED by the Leafs, as was his protégé and successor Dave Nonis;

such a great magician that current management is doing everything it can to REMOVE all traces of his tenure by blowing up the whole organization and starting over from scratch;

such a great magician that he brought in two of the biggest roadblocks to success, who are now proving VERY difficult to unload because of their poor results, ludicrously high undeserved salaries and ridiculously long contracts;

such a great magician that he COULD have had Tyler Seguin, Dougie Hamilton and MORE...and threw it all away for Phil Kessel and his GREAT plus-minus stats.

Totally happy with Mitch Marner as a Leaf!

Totally happy of course, but are you as happy as you were with all the other Leaf acquisitions over the years? Kessel, Phaneuf, Clarkson, Komi, Lupul, Kadri, Gunnarson, the Monster, Carter Ashton, Colton "not Bobby" Orr, etc.? Because I know you were VERY happy with all those.

As for Mitch, he's a talented little player...with the accent on "little". I hope that he has a very successful career after he leaves the Leafs.

You know, GHG, it's funny but my sources told me exactly the same thing!

In fact, my sources also said that the Leafs have not made it to the Finals even ONCE since 1967. Golly gee, that's already 48 years!

My sources also told me that in their entire history the Leafs have never, EVER won more than two playoff rounds in a year.

And my sources are usually correct, so I think what they told me is true.

I asked my sources how the Leafs can charge their "fans" the HIGHEST prices in the League when they have such a poor history and such consistently poor results. For the first time ever, my sources had no answer to that question! I can't blame them...because it IS a mystery!

Look behind you.
The Oilers got Talbot for draft picks 57 , 79 & 184............. Sather must still have feelings for the Oil. Plus Reinhart on D should keep a few pucks away from the net.... Still pumped about the new season..

Leafs wait and watch the blockbusters

Around the league, there are starting to be rumblings that the Leafs aren’t so much patient as they’re paralyzed. They nibble on deals, on hirings, on decisions, and people whisper it more and more. Hunter picking players?

http://www.thestar.com/sports/leafs/2015/06/26/leafs-wait-and-watch-the-blockbusters-arthur.html

Meanwhile, the Sabres continued to steam ahead, trading for Ottawa goaltender Robin Lehner early in the day, and then pulling the trigger on Ryan O’Reilly in a mini-blockbuster in the evening. The Sabres can now run out Jack Eichel, O’Reilly, and Sam Reinhart at centre, and added Evander Kane late last season. Mike Babcock might yet wish that Buffalo’s downtown condos and shops and restaurant scene were more appealing than it is.

Leafs keep coming up short on draft weekend

It is noteworthy that Marner plays for the Knights, partly owned by Hunter. A cynic might raise a Spockian eyebrow at that potential conflict, which only adds another layer of pressure on Marner to be the star player the Leafs need him to be. The club hasn’t drafted one in a long, long time, not surprising for a team that drafted Luke Richardson ahead of Joe Sakic in 1987. The two best Leaf picks since, Alex Steen and Tuukka Rask, were traded away and turned into top-flight NHLers for other teams

http://www.thestar.com/sports/hockey/2015/06/27/leafs-keep-coming-up-short-on-draft-weekend-cox.html

Buffalo, just down the highway from the Leafs, dealt for Lehner and veteran centre David Legwand, drafted Jack Eichel behind McDavid and traded for Colorado centre Ryan O’Reilly. When you include the acquisition of Evander Kane at the trade deadline, it’s clear the Sabres don’t intend to stay at the bottom of the NHL much longer.

Indeed. That spot is where the TML will be next season.

Bad ownership, hopeless GMs, crappy coaches for the most part (but not always), gutless overrated untalented players, hopeless scouting, laughable draft picks (when they weren't SQUANDERED for one-dimensional underachieving out-of-shape prima donnas), hopeless trades ((Rask for Andrew Freakin' Raycroft), ludicrous contracts (Komi, Kessel, Phaneuf, Lupul, Bozak, Clarkson) - no wonder this team always stinks so badly!

Luke Richardson instead of Joe Sakic - love it!

You got a quality guy for sure
He was asked to fill in for Henrik after the throat injury knocked him out for weeks

We should have folded, but he was lights out in a relief role

He went 16-4 in relief

I think he won 10 in a row at one point, allowing Lundqvist to take his time coming back

He was my MVP last season

Good luck wth him

Best Regards

STN, the Oil will definately be better than the last several seasons but if they were smart they would trade one or more of Hall/Rnh/Yakapuv/Eberle for more D and then maybe they could sneak into the playoffs this coming season, maybe.

Guys,

I heard today that Milan Lucic and Dougie Hamilton had been traded to get 3 1st round draft picks today. Wow. It looks like Sweeney is coming in with some real balls diving right in to full rebuild mode. Two significant players gone and 3 consecutive draft picks. Go Donny Go!

http://espn.go.com/blog/boston/brui...p-shows-sweeney-has-long-term-plan-for-bruins

SUNRISE, Fla. -- Boston Bruins general manager Don Sweeney made a big splash on Day 1 of the 2015 NHL draft with a major overhaul of the team's cap-strapped roster with his sights on a possible rebuild.

Sweeney traded veteran forward Milan Lucic to the Los Angeles Kings, and in a separate transaction the GM traded 22-year-old defenseman Dougie Hamilton to the Calgary Flames. As part of the moves, the Bruins acquired two first-round picks in this year's draft, giving them Nos. 13, 14 and 15.

With those picks, the Bruins selected defenseman Jakub Zboril, forward Jake DeBrusk and forward Zachary Senyshyn, respectively.

Despite the shake-up, Sweeney says he believes the Bruins will still contend for a playoff berth in the 2015-16 season.

Along with the Kings' first-round pick (No. 13), the Bruins acquired goaltender Martin Jones and prospect Colin Miller. The Bruins also retain $2.7 million of Lucic's contract. Along with the Flames' first-round pick (No. 15), Boston also acquired Calgary's 45th and 52nd overall selections.

Sweeney also announced he re-signed veteran defenseman Adam McQuaid to a four-year deal worth $11 million.

For a team that's built with a defense-first mentality, it's going to be difficult to fill the void left by Hamilton. The former first-round pick (No. 9 overall in 2011) has the size and skill to be a top defender for a long time.

Hamilton is a restricted free agent this summer and the sides had been talking about a long-term contract before Sweeney realized it wasn't going to work out.

"The offer that I offered was certainly in line with comparables," Sweeney said. "So, the spread for me was an indication that maybe we'd be better served if we went in a different direction at this time."

The Bruins were well aware that more than one team was planning to extend Hamilton an offer sheet. Sweeney said as talks came down the stretch, the Bruins felt they positioned themselves to sign Hamilton, especially given the fact the team was in the process of trading Lucic. The pending offer sheets from other teams did not scare Sweeney and they would have matched any offer.

"We extended Dougie a very significant contract offer and it didn't lead us to where we thought we'd be able to [have] him comfortable being part of our group long term," Sweeney said.

Lucic had just returned home to Vancouver after a family trip to Disneyland in Southern California when he learned of the trade. Over the past few days, he heard and read the rumors of a possible trade and described it as an emotional time.

"I'm anxious, sad and excited all at the same time," he said.

Sweeney said it was a difficult conversation to have because of all that Lucic meant to the Bruins' organization. Lucic has one year and $6.5 million remaining on his current contract and he was hoping for a contract extension sooner than later. Sweeney admitted the sides talked about that possibility, but the Bruins realized they didn't have the resources to give the pending unrestricted free agent what he was looking for.

"I can't tell you how difficult the call was to make, and I expressed that to Milan," Sweeney said. "It was a very difficult conversation to have. I just felt the situation we were in it was going to be very difficult to extend the offer to the level that it would take to retain Milan going forward."

When Lucic received the call he said he could sense it in Sweeney's voice.

"It was definitely an emotional call," Lucic said.

Bruins assistant captain Patrice Bergeron reacted to the changes the team made and said he understands it's part of the business.

"It's always sad to see players leave and it's the tough part of the business," Bergeron told ESPN.com. "I definitely wish them all the best in Calgary and L.A., respectively."

With all the changes the Bruins made in a 24-hour period, including the trades of Lucic, Hamilton and Carl Soderberg, Bergeron says he trusts Sweeney's vision.

"I've had a chance to play with Looch for the last eight years and I won a Cup with him. We are friends and I'll miss him. Dougie is a young player with a bright future ahead of him and I wish him all the best, also," Bergeron said. "That being said, it's the business we are in and we are aware when we sign in. I trust Don and the management's plan moving forward."

Before the 2006 draft, the Kings met with Lucic three times and the forward thought he would be chosen by Los Angeles with the No. 48 pick. Instead, he went to the Bruins at No. 50.

"What I thought was going to happen in 2006 has happened today," Lucic said.

He also says he believes the Bruins will be fine moving forward, especially with players like Tuukka Rask, Bergeron and David Krejci.

"I was part of that organization for a long time and I was fortunate to be part of the identity," Lucic said. "They'll be fine. I wish them all the best, but not against the Kings."

Lucic's size, strength and ability will add to an already solid Kings team that has won a pair of Stanley Cup in recent years.

Sweeney and the Bruins have the assets now to possibly make other changes in the future. Jones, who will back up starter Rask, has the ability to become a No. 1 goaltender in the NHL. If Jones develops into what many believe he will, it could allow Sweeney to create more cap space by moving Rask, and his $7 million per season contract, in the future. Lucic was trending down and obviously wanted big money with his next contract, so that deal makes sense in the long term.

There's no doubt Sweeney and the Bruins have a long-term plan in mind and it began in earnest Friday.

This is what I like. No quick fix Kessel phony star deals. Be patient and Build...Build...Build.
