David Cone of the Yankees was exactly the same type of pitcher. Unfortunately, even though he had better stuff than Lester, Coney was not as big, strong and durable as Lester. The result is that he was shot as a pitcher by age 35. Too many games, too many high pitch counts, all from too much nibbling, ultimately did him in. Which was a shame because he was one of the most creative pitchers I have ever seen.

You meant to say David Cone of the Toronto Blue Jays. And of the New York Mets. ;)

I can only comment on the 6 seasons he pitched for the Yankees, during which they were in the playoffs every year 1995-2000 winning it all 4 of those years and losing heartbreaking 5 game series the other 2. Cone pitched for Boston too, but at that point he was shot as a pitcher.

Decent test for Tanaka and Pineda this week against the rouge hose even tho those guys over in chow-duh town are not exactly "lights out" hitting wise what with a team batting average of .238 at the moment. All in all tho it should be a nice "test" for the 2 young Yankees.

BOYZ!

I see Shabazz Napier grew up in Roxbury. Along with Dorchester it's one of the toughest places around the Boston metro area and the state to grow up in. Congratulations on his and the team's accomplishments. No doubt the Red Sox are eager to honor him and the team. Since the new ownership with John Henry and Tom Werner the team has become very adept at every angle of public relations that connects with the fans, and the local connection with Shabazz and the National Champion Huskies was another of many astute publicity moves by the team.

As for the Red Sox tonight, the team ranks 23rd in AVG, 23rd in SLG, 21st in OPS, but surprisingly 10th in OBP. As usual they can get on base but have a lot of trouble putting across RUNS where they rank 20th. It makes me realize how miraculous the World Series win was when the Red Sox put so few men on base but were almost miraculously opportunistic at putting them across the plate.

More surprisingly where the Yankees rank 5th in AVG they rank worse than the Red Sox at 22nd in RUNS. By the numbers this won't be a big test for the best pinstripe pitchers, but then who knows when the rivalry factor takes over. It is going to be interesting to see how 3rd baseman Brock Holt holds up against very good pitching now that he is off to a short but very promising start at bat.

Lester 2.17 versus Tanaka 2.05 should be a tight close low scoring game. But who knows. The Yanks should have the advantage if they can put their runners across.

As for Ellsbury, we all knew he would go with the money when the time came. There was no deception and no surprise about his moving on. So I would give him the appreciation he deserves.

Merlot, regarding Shabazz Napier, his importance to UConn and toughness is amply demonstrated in this short video of his game winning shot in UConn's first of two wins over Florida. which was ranked #1 in the country most of the year. UConn had the the ball down 1, and Florida threw a trap at Napier designed to flush the ball out of his hands and make someone else on the UConn team beat them. It was a great strategy, but it did not work, because Napier dribbled through the trap (still don't know how he did it), and although he bricked his first shot, DeAndre backtapped the rebound to Napier for the game winning shot:

Only tough as nails players beat a trap that good.

Lester has thrown 72 pitches in 3 innings, allowing 9 hits and 3 walks. This is what happens when he gets the strike zone squeezed on him. He becomes another pinata for the Yankees bats to crack.

Lester has a WHIP of over 3.00 tonight, so far  ***edit... that went up a tad since first posting ***

Man, do the rouge hose miss Ellsbury or what! No wonder they are not scoring runs like the last several years, Jacoby is not there anymore, he is now setting the table and driving them in for the Yanks. What a brilliant move going after Ellsbury by the Yanks, not only does it add to their ball club but it takes away from his former club, but then again what a stupid move by the rouge hose for NOT EVEN OFFERING him a contract  Bravo Ben (e-boy) Cherrington, Bravo indeed :thumb:

Lester finished withe 11 hits and 4 walks in 4.2 innings. Not a good WHIP. Lester's career WHIP is 1.30 which is a bit high for an elite pitcher. By contrast CC has a career WHIP of 1.23 and Kuroda's is 1.18.

Ya but it was against the Red Sox and previously against the lowly Cubs, wait until he plays against a good team, the jury is still out on him.

Smartest thing you've said in this entire thread Joe. Congrats!! Lol.

Tanaka has 35 strikeouts and 2 walks this year.

It is interesting watching Tanaka pitch. He definitely keeps the batters unbalanced. His slider dips a bit and you can see the batter adjusting their swing in order to make contact with the pitch. The result is an easy grounder or fly ball to the outfield.

Is there a reason why someone like Jonny Gomes isn't pitching in the ninth, shouldn't Farrell be thinking about resting some arms.

Joe t. should be managing the Red Sox (aka Boston Fluke). Maybe not. They would win 10 more games than they normally would but ... it's still last place.
