Just wondering...if the Sox dumped Grady Sizemore, why didn't they send him back to AAA and let him try to shake out the rust there?

I am writing in All-Star votes for phenom Tiger outfielder JD Martinez. He was waived by the Astros at the beginning of the season and picked up by the Tigers. In AAA JD Martinez hit 10 HRs in 65 at bats. They brought him up to the big club and he mostly sat until he got his chance recently. He was MLB player of the week last week. He had 3 hits and an HR yesterday and he has a HR and a double today. He is well over .300 with incredible power and didn't cost the Tigers a thing.

After the fiasco with the Fister trade to the Nationals for virtually nothing in return just so they could dump Fister's modest salary to afford 10MM$/year for the 40 y.o. self proclaimed "dead-armed" Joe Nathan. After a disgraceful April and May and 1st half of June, Nathan is finally coming out of his funk (I hope). The fister trade was the worst trade in the history of the MLB and maybe the worst trade since that guy in the old testament traded his birthright for a bowl of soup!

Go Tigers

BOYZ!

My All-Star votes:

1st Base: Miguel Cabrera | DET

2nd Base: Robinson Cano | SEA

SS: Alexei Ramirez | CWS

3rd Base: Adrian Beltre | TEX

Catcher: Derek Norris | OAK

Designated Hitter: Edwin Encarnacion | TOR

Outfield: Jose Bautista | TOR, Michael Brantley | CLE, Mike Trout | LAA

I see the TRAVESTY of voting for Jeter is in full PITY mode. You've got be a freaking IDIOT to think Jeter belongs in this All-Star game. Pity should not be part of it, and if it isn't pity his voters need to get their brains back from the laundry before voting.

TRULY,

I don't agree with that at all. It's true that Jeter isn't having an All-Star year, but why wouldn't you want to see a future Hall of Famer in his last All-Star game? He's one of the game's greats, whether you like him or not. Would you not vote for Lou Gehrig because he was clumsy in his last year? Sometimes Red Sox fans become blinded by their hatred for the Yankees.

Dude,

You have no idea what you're talking about. It's not an old man legends show. I like Jeter a lot as I've said many times publicly, but he can't hit much and he's slow in the field with limited range. I picked Cano last year and this year because of who he is and what he achieves, NOT because of the uniform. The game also counts for home field advantage. It's not to see Jeter parade his aging butt. If I was blind I would have picked undeserving Red Sox players, just like I'm sure some Yankee boys here picked Jeter. I didn't, but sure as hell they did. Many of you picked Jeter in 2013 despite missing 145 games and even though he hadn't play even 10 games before the All-Star break, which was sick. Talk about being freaking BLIND!!!

I wouldn't vote for Gehrig or anyone, even Ted Williams if they couldn't cut it that year. Fortunately Teddy had an awesome last year with a BA .316, .OBP .451, SLG .645, OPS 1.096. In fact there was only 1 year when he wasn't above 1.000 for OPS.

You Yankees fan really need to discover the concept if integrity. It's not part of a foreign language...except in New York. I stand by every word about old Jetes.

Cheers,

Merlot

Sure, and in a perfect world the oscar for best picture would actually go to the best movie of the year. The sentimental vote has always been a part of this & that's the way it will go with Jeter. C'est la vie!

It's entirely possible that he refused to be sent down & preferred taking his chances and signing with another team. He's not a bad pickup if used in a utility role. His experience & leadership could be a bonus to a contending team with younger players.

p.s. Merlot, i agree with your picks (but Weiters?) & your views on Jeter being selected. The all-star game isn't supposed to be a charity game.

This might surprise you, but I agree with your basic premise also. However, should sentimentalism stop just because it's a Yankee being selected?

I considered that Doc.

Merlot - Matt Weiters is out for Tommy John so you need to pick another catcher. Beltre is one hell of a 3B. Detroit is playing the Rangers this week and in two games I think Beltre has 7 hits so far which is normal for him against the vaunted Tiger's staff. However Donaldson has been a hell of a 3B.

Enclosed are the WAR LDRS for the American League by position:

WAR leaders by position

C Salvador Perez KC Royals
1B Miguel Cabrara Tigers
2B Brian Dozier Twins
SS Eric Ayber Angeles
3B Jake Donaldson Oakland Athletics
RF Juan Bautista Toronto
CF Mike Trout Angels
LF Alex Gordon KC
DH Victor Martinez Detroit

National League by WAR:
C John Lucroy Brewers
1B Paul Goldschmidt Az
2B Chase Utly Phillys
SS Troy Tulowitski Rockies
3B Todd Frazier Reds
RF Carlo Stanton Marlins
CF Carlos Gomez Brewers
LF Seth Smith Padres (write in)

I have voted this line up a few times. I also sprinkled in votes for Kinsler, Gomes, Cruz, Encarnacion, write in for JD Martinez and a few others. .

As promised, here are my weekly thoughts on the state of baseball in the AL East......

The Toronto Blue Jays have struggled lately. Every team usually goes through a slump at least once during a season. But they've also had to deal with injuries: Adam Lind, Colby Rasmus, Brett Lawrie & now Jose Bautista, among others. Lind & Rasmus are now back and playing quite well. Lawrie was playing extermely well when he got hurt, and Bautista was one of the team's leaders in hitting. On top of that, they still haven't had a regular second baseman in the lineup. They lost starting 2nd baseman Maicer Izturis early into the season & have given several players a try at playing the position effectively. Currently, fan-favorite Muni Kawasaki is being given the chance and has actually played very well so far.

The starting pitching has been pleasantly surprising all season long. Mark Buehrle has pitched great all season long and should actually have a better record. Drew Hutchison has pltched very well & so has rookie Marcus Stroman. J.A. Happ has surprised many & R.A. Dickey has pitched very well, but has been the victim of the long ball in most of his starts.

Even though the Jays have recently been in a slump, they've managed to hold on to first place for most of the season. It should be a tight race between them & the surprising Orioles for the rest of the season. The Orioles don't have great pitching, but man can they hit!!

The New York Yankees. Let me say this: I go through their lineup & can't figure out why they aren't in last place. Other than Brett Gardiner and Jacoby Ellsbury, they don't really have anything hitting-wise. Derek Jeter has been struggling both in the field & at the plate all season long. Ellsbury has been decent, but still a disappointment considering the money he's been paid by the Yankees. Mark Texeira is an average first baseman & no longer hits for average. Brian McCann has so far been the biggest free agent bust in baseball. Brian Roberts is old. Solarte's batting average has continued to decline after a great start, Soriano should have retired after last season, Ichiro is being used sparingly & Carlos Beltran has been a tremendous bust. Light-hitting Kelly Johnson has barely missed a game & you know things can't be good when he's one of your starters.

The only real bright spot in that entire lineup has been Tanaka's pitching. If the season ended today, you could easily hand him the Cy Young. He's been even better than expectations, which were already considerably high in the Bronx. Would it be too crazy to say that without him, the Yankees would have 10 less wins in the win column? Would it be too crazy to say that they'd be behind the Red Sox without him? Sure, he's costing way too much money to the Yankees. And sure, his pitching alone has falsely given Yankee hope about this team. Yes, they suck. But they don't appear to suck as much as they should because of Tanaka alone. And because of this, he's the rare Yankee who has actually played to the level of his big contract. Most of the others should be ashamed of themselves & should give back some of their paycheques to their fans & other charitable organizations.

However, the pitching has been good, especially the bullpen. Betances, Thornton, Kelley & Robertson have been nothing short of great. Sure, they lost Sabathia, Pineda & Nova to injuries, but starting pitching hasn't been the main problem. You can't win with such atrocious hitting, no matter how good the pitching is. However, the Yankees have managed to contend without having a regular .300 hitting in the lineup. Credit to Joe Girardi and his coaching staff.

The Boston Red Sox. Folks, this is a bad team! Currently, their best player is Brock Holt, who's played nearly everywhere in the lineup. Last night, they had him playing first base. He's their best hitter by far. Pappi is now known as Little Pappi. He's showing his age & has slowed down considerably this season. Dustin Pedroia has also slowed down, but plays a decent 2nd base. Free agent Stephen Drew has been a huge disappointment. He's currently hitting only .122. Xavier Bogaerts has slumped and his average is now .256. Centerfielder Jackie Bradley Jr. has barely hit over .200 all season long and should have been sent back to the minors long ago. Victorino being injured hasn't helped, Daniel Nava has spent a good part of the season in the minors, and one of the few bright spots has been Mike Napoli, who's hitting well but hasn't hit the long ball as much as expected. And Johny Gomes hasn't been much better either. More production was expected of him when they signed him a year ago. At catcher, A.J. Pierzinski has played decent, but his back-up David Ross is also one of the league's worst hitters. When he's in the lineup, he's in there for defensive purposes only. They should have held on to Saltylamachia.

The starters haven't been any better. Bucholz has been a huge bust, even though he pitched decent last night. Lester has been okay, but Jake Peavy has been downright awful and there's talk he might be sent to the DL for some rest, just like they just did with Bucholz. Doubront is now in the bullpen and it's about time they give Workman a look as a starter. And finally, John Lackie has impressed at times & has possibly been their best pitcher. In the bullpen, things haven't been that much better, but closer Uehara has been very good so far. This is a team that will be lucky not to finish in last place. Just the other day, a member of the Boston media was saying that it's time to rebuild from scratch and get rid of all your current assets in order to get prospects in return. He also mentionned it's also time to bring up some of the kids & take a good look at them.

The Tampa Rays have been a huge disappointment all season long. Sure, they've had injuries to their pitching staff. But every team goes through injuries. Evan Longoria has also had a tough season at the plate so far. He hasn't played like they all-star he's been in the past. Ben Zobrist will likely be traded. David Price has pitched well most of the time, and he'll also likely be traded soon. This is a team i expect will have a decent 2nd half and will likely surpass the Red Sox and maybe even the Yankees by the end of the season.

Forgot. I changed to Derek Norris of Oakland at catcher, and I dropped Cespedes in the outfield for Mike Trout. I didn't go by WAR. I also don't not know everyone's fielding capabilities so I went with AVG, run production and power.

However, should sentimentalism stop just because it's a Yankee being selected?

Why did you automatically come in criticizing me with accusations of hate where it had no place. Didn't you ever consider the principle of MERIT. Anyone who wouldn't choose a Cano, Gehrig, or Guidry because of the uniform is NOT a fan of baseball. That's why I've picked Cano as a Yankee. As for hating the Yankees, yes, but never with the stupidity of letting rivalry hurt an All-Star team. You brought in bias because the rivalry was stuck in your mind, so the negativism is with you, not me. I have always emphasized merit first, not sentimentalism. Sentimentalism is counterproductive when you are making a team. It stops the team from improving by making necessary decisions. It also cheats the real deserving players because of cheap favoritism.

At his level of play this year Jeter is no more than a barely average fill-in, the kind of player you are stuck with if you look at him based on playing quality, especially because of his fading fielding abilities. Take away the name and every Yankees fan would say, eh, he's getting paid a ton and there aren't other better choices so he'll do for now. Choosing him will not give the AL the best chance. Whether he plays and contributes or not picking him is a travesty. Sentimentalism should never have been a part of this. As an honorable man I'm sure Jeter is proud of being justly picked for the many times he earned it. But as an honorable player I'm also sure he knows when he's being picked as a token, and though he will appreciate the "love" he himself knows when he's just a token and that is an insult for an honorable man.

BTW: I would have loved to have picked Pedroia because he's a wizard with the glove and he always gives every ounce he's got. But he isn't the best choice...this year. Uehara should go. Despite a bad outing his ERA is 1.26, better than any year by Rivera, and his WHIP is still a historic 0.757 just slightly more than only one of Mariano Rivera's years. That's epic!

Cheers,

Merlot

Both very good choices & i also agree with them.

As for Jeter being selected to the all-star game, it makes a mockery out of that game. Shameful!

p.s. Maybe the format should be altered to where a 'veteran' player who is a former all-star can get selected to each team (in a special 'veteran' category) by his peers or fans. I believe the NHL once tried this format. Not sure if it's still in effect.

You're right. I did do this and I apologize. I also said that I agreed with you. However, sentimentalism is a part of All-Star voting and it always will be as long as the fans are allowed to vote. Why not simply have a computer spit out the roster based on stats? Why should a coach get to pick players from his own team? It's an imperfect system, but it's been this way for quite a while. You might say that the imperfection itself is traditional...

The problem with having the fans chose the all-star teams starting lineups is that no other cities can match up with the likes of New York & Los Angeles in terms of population. Teams from those cities have huge fan bases because of their size & overall team popularity around the country. This is why a non-deserving player such as Derek Jeter leads in voting for AL shortstops as of today. Call it ballot box-stuffing or whatever, but this is why. Had Jose Reyes being playing for the Yankees, he'd likely be leading right now. That's why having the fans decide the starting lineups is a flawed system. Players on small market teams (i know, there are exceptions) barely stand a chance of ever being voted on to the all-star team starting lineup.

This is how Yankee fans see the world. It's as good an explanation as any!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wUUlkpSOIcg

It's partly this, and it is partly that a lot of outsiders are judging the Yankees against the lineups they fielded in the recent years. It's not really a fair comparison, because the Yankees have tremendous speed at the top of their lineup and solid pitching. Ellsbury and Gardner have swiped 36 bases combined. So they have the team that at least has the potential to manufacture runs in close games, which is something they did not have in the past 10 years when they basically waited for the 3 run homer and it either happened or didn't, and it is obviously tougher to make that happen in the playoffs. Speed on the other hand NEVER slumps, and if you look at the CS totals on Ellsbury and Gardner, you will see that these two thieves are not being caught. #2 and #8 in stolen bases.

So if you want to do an actual intelligent analysis of why the Yankees are staying close you have to look at these things. They actually have a team that is better built for the playoffs than the past few years, assuming they get Pineda and CC back and both pitch well and show themselves to be worthy behind Tanaka. The bullpen is solid with a capital S and the coaching staff is the best in the majors.

You got that right. I think Reggie Jackson could of made the all star team 10 years after he retired if they just would of put his name on the ballet.

Boyzzzzzzz!

Jeter, being one of the best Yankees/Players in history has earned the right to start his final allstar game and it is obviously what the fans want. Have any of you noticed how many standing ovations this guy gets on the road this season? Or how many people are taking pictures of him on every pitch when he is at bat or when any balls are hit to him? All this on the road. At home it is normal.

It is wonderful that he will be voted in at SS for the ASG, just as he should be. He has been a iconic Yankee and a great role model for kids. How many times during the little league world series when the starting lineups are presented and the kids have to say their fav player growing up and we hear "Derek Jeter" more than ANY other name?

GREAT STUFF! :thumb:

Exactly, Tanaka deserves to be there and so does Jeter for all he has done for the game and it is tradition for a superstar who is in their final year to be at the ASG. Anyone remember Ripken? Tradition is what baseball is about boyzzzz

As far fetched as this scenario I'm about to bring up is it would be the funniest thing to ever happen in a World Series. Jeter starting at SS in the ASG, "past a diving Jeter" and that run comes around to be the deciding run in a Home Field Advantage series. Now here' the far fetched part. The Yankees actually make the playoffs and somehow weasel there way into the Series only to lose Game 7 on the road. How sweet would that be?!?!?!?!
