Bergevin meant every word he said in regards to Michel Therrien & the only way Therrien gets fired prior to the end of the season is if the majority owner (Geoff Molson) orders it. And if so, Bergevin will resign or force the owner to fire him also. Say or think whatever you want of Marc Bergevin, but he's a man of his word & very credible.
I doubt Michel Therrien will be fired. He was just given a 4-year extension this past fall. That's a lot of money to simply throw away if you fire him. And let's be honest: Marc Bergevin hasn't really given him much to work with. Last year i was saying that Michel Therrien deserved to win the Jack Adams (best coach) considering what he had to work with. This season i was saying that Michel Therrien should get on his hands and knees and thank God for letting him coach a team that has Carey Price.
Last season, the problem was scoring. It showed in the playoffs also. During the off-season, Bergevin didn't do anything other than picking up a couple of rejects no one wanted to sign. One of them is now playing in the KHL since he was a tremendous as many had predicted (incl. yours truly) he'd be. The other guy started well, but isn't doing anything anymore and has had to sit out some games. He then picked up a midget on waivers who's been one of the team's top scorers since the slump started. The other top scorer was called up from the minors and for whatever the reason, Bergevin sent him down to the minors last week. No one has figured out why.
Everyone tells him he must make a big trade in order to improve the team's overall scoring. He refuses to budge since he doesn't want to part with his assets. No one wants anything to do with the players he's willing to part with (the underachievers on his team). Plekanec has another year left at $6 million. Markov has another year left at the same price. No one wants an aging player whose skills have eroded at those prices. No one wants Lars Eller or David Desharnais. Pacioretty could be made available if the price was right, but Bergevin's price is too high for him. Same thing with Galchenyuk. Same thing with Beaulieu, whose value has went down since the start of the season, yet Bergevin doesn't realize this. Subban? Personally i wouldn't touch his contract with a ten-foot pole, plus he hasn't brought anything to his team other than brutal giveaways and dumb penalties....and a questionable influence on the rest of the team. But he and Carey Price could actually bring back a few players of high value, yet Bergevin refuses to part with them. And even if he would, the majority owner would probably block the move.
And then there's the case of Jarred Tinordi. He should have traded him prior to this season when he still had value. But the fact he went something like almost 40 games without playing didn't exactly raise his stock. The best they could get out of that trade debacle was some minor league defenceman named Victor Bartley and on top of that, they were forced to take on the controversial John Scott's contract.
And on the farm, there isn't much trade bait either. I see two prospects: Sherback and McCarron. But they are not elite prospects. There is no guarantee they'll ever make it to the NHL as regulars. Sherback is a bit of a David Desharnais type. McCarron is a Turner Stevenson type and people who've followed his career say that he won't be any better than a 3rd or 4th liner if he ever makes it to the big show. There's also goalie Zack Fucale, but goaltending prospects with no NHL experience rarely get a good return in a trade.
This season, i rate Marc Bergevin's performance a D-.
All season long in a year where the motto was supposed to be "no excuses", that's all we've been hearing since Carey Price went down for a second time in mid-December. Okay, i get it. It hurts when your best player goes down. It's happened to other teams in the past also. But none of the other teams have a Carey Price, yet they've found ways to win games. What's happening right now in Montreal is of historical embarrassment proportions!!!!
Right now the main problem with this team is that there is a clear lack of veteran leadership. It's in situations like these that the likes of Brian Gionta and Josh Gorges are important to the team. Yet they were discarded in favor of players who were either younger or without any leadership skills. Bad formula if you ask me!
What i feel will happen is that they'll wind up trading for an expensive veteran or a well-regarded veteran on an expiring contract. An Eric Staal. Or maybe an Andrew Ladd. One of those types of players.
