Doc was right, that Eller for Shaw trade was about as blockbuster as Bargain Bin Bergervin can make. :pound:

Absolutely!!! Habs fans should circle this date!!! Bergevin finally made a couple of big trades (for him!!)!!!!! They were HUGE (for him!!) !!!! :pound:

With the selection of Tage Thompson in the NHL Draft 1st round last night, UConn has had 15 athletes selected in the first round of professional sports drafts since 2014, most of any school. UConn is also the only school to have had a 1st round pick in the NFL, MLB, NBA and NHL drafts since 2014. Here are the Fab 15:

Thompson is the kid on the top left, next to him is New York Mets 1st round draft pick Anthony Kay, and next to them are the 3 UConn basketball girls who went #1, 2 and 3 overall in the WNBA Draft, Stewart, Jefferson and Tuck, first time that has ever happened.

I love some of the moves made at the draft. I like Bergevin's moves that he made yesterday. Lars Eller was going nowhere with this organization and playing in Washington will upgrade his game. Andrew Shaw will be a fan-favorite. Many habs fans are complaining that they paid too much for him, but all they gave up were a couple of second-rounders. It's worth the gamble.

I especially like the fact Calgary picked up goalie Brian Elliott from St-Louis. He's as good as any top 10 goalie in this league. His trade to Calgary will hurt James Reimer's attempts to find employment elsewhere in the league as a #1 goalie (Reimer is the #1 UFA goalie on the market). But it may also hurt Tampa's chances in trying to trade Ben Bishop. It's now well-known Yzerman is trying to move him before losing him to the expansion draft next season. I wouldn't be surprise if Pittsburgh isn't trying to do the same thing with M-A Fleury.

Buffalo also made a very good trade today in obtaining defenceman Dimitry Kulikov from Florida. It'll be a great trade if they can re-sign him before he becomes UFA next season.

I hate the Pavel Datsyuk trade to Arizona. It was a bone-headed move by Arizona and what they got in return wasn't much. But what can i say? That's what happens when you hand over an NHL GM's job to a raw 27 year old who has no clue what he's doing!

This move now means that Detroit is a bonafide suitor for Steven Stamkos. Add them to the list of Toronto, Buffalo and Montreal. I learned this morning that Detroit is rumoured to be offering up to $10 million a season/7 years to Stamkos. Tampa's maximum offer is $8.5 million/8 years and Yzerman said that was his final 'take it or leave it' offer on the table. Personally, i can't see Toronto offering him more than what Tampa offered him. Plus you have to take into account the fact he would not be paying any state income tax in Florida as opposed to playing in Toronto where taxes are considerably higher and the cost of living sky-high. Montreal could sign him if they wind up clearing their cap amount by trading PK Subban.

It wouldn't be such a bad thing actually if he didn't sign with the Leafs considering the large chunk of cap amount his contract would swallow up. Plus it's difficult for me to imagine he'd be happy living in Detroit, Michigan over Toronto, Montreal or Tampa. Therefore, unless Toronto can match Buffalo and Detroit's numbers, i can only conclude that he'll wind up staying in Tampa. I'm certain that until a few weeks ago, in his mind it was either going to Toronto or staying put.

And if he does wind up staying in Tampa, that's also good news for the other wealthy teams in the league. It means that Tampa will have a harder time re-signing its other stars. Victor Hedman is due to become UFA next season and i'd rather have him on my team than Stamkos, to be honest. I consider Hedman to easily be one of the top 10 defencemen in the entire league. And he'll only get better!

What i've found surprising since friday's draft is that there are a whole lot of habs fans upset at Marc Bergevin for paying so much for Andrew Shaw, a third-liner. Many of the disgruntled fans are pointing out that it would have cost less to acquire Teravainen, who has the potential to become a star in this league. Andrew Shaw has been described as being a typical third-liner who will remind fans of Brendan Gallagher.

Okay, maybe it is true that he may not be worth two 2nd-rounders, but i'm still convinced he'll become a fan-favorite.

At least he's not a 4th-liner, which are the typical type of players usually acquired by Marc "Bargain Bin" Bergevin. At least this third-line player is a well-regarded one whom most teams would like to have in their lineup. Okay, most of them wouldn't have paid that hefty of a price, but still.

As for Lars Eller, he'll welcome of environment and may strive playing away from Michel Therrien's tight-checking system. Watch him score 25-30+ goals with the Capitals now.

Are there any statistics on how often second round picks become useful regular NHL players? I am curious because a fan has no basis for being upset about the trade unless we know those picks materialize into something. At the moment it's a something for nothing trade. We don't know if it will be something for something until we see what happens with those draft picks.

True. They thought very highly of him, just as highly as they thought of Brandon Saad last season before trading him to Columbus. But once again, their annual salary cap problems have been the cause of them having to trade him away. They also felt that he wasn't worth the money he was asking, considering he's a typical third-line forward.

No doubt Marc "Bargain Bin" Bergevin has already told Shaw's agent Pat Brisson that he doesn't have to worry about them coming to an agreement which will be satisfactory to both parties. Yes, he'll likely wind up overpaying him, like he's overpaid the likes of Plekanec & Emelin, among others.

Hey Guys,

This link below was an interesting analysis of the Habs in the CTV news pertinent on several levels to recent topics discussed.

First, there is a discussion of Bergevin and Therrien and their deep flaws as hockey men and what we can hope for them to do in the future.

Second, there is an assessment of the Andrew Shaw trade which answers the question I previously posed about chances of success with a second round draft pick. According to this its 1 in 8 a second round draft pick will be anything in the NHL. So with two picks the Habs traded a 25% chance of getting somebody worthwhile for Shaw. If this analysis is correct it's a 75% chance that this was a something for nothing trade by Bergevin.

Meanwhile the article while praising that deal, snickers at Kassian and Semin acquisitions last year. See this:

Thanks for post thing great link, EB.

I agree that second round picks often don't amount to much, but PK Subban himself was a second round pick. Many great players in the game today and yesterday were picked past the first round. Some weren't picked at all.

But to me, the Andrew Shaw trade was a good trade for the habs. But from what i've seen and heard on the boards and on radio, 8 out of 10 comments are negative about the trade and many are throwing arrows at Bergevin for giving up so much in order to obtain a 3rd liner. Again, i believe Andrew Shaw will become a fan-favorite and Bergevin will eventually be given accolades for pulling off the trade. I've also heard people bitching that he could have got more for Lars Eller, but while it is true that this team greatly lacks skill forwards who have the ability to score a goal once in a while, i think getting two future 2nd round picks for him was the best deal he could get. No doubt those whiners were once Jaroslav Halak fans.

The Kassian and Semin deals were bad deals, but he didn't pay much when he signed Semin to a minimum deal. The Kassian deal i questioned from the start. I had always considered Brandon Prust as the heart n' soul of the team and he gave it his all for every single teammate of is. Kassian had a bad reputation in Vancouver for being a party boy and i was told by a source in the area that there wasn't a strip club in Vancouver that he hadn't regularly visited. And Bergevin expected him to change if he moved to Montreal??? Nuts!!!

Speaking of Kassian, the car dealership which was lending him the truck involved in that infamous accident is now suing him for the value of the pick-up truck (over $80 000). He's named in the lawsuit along with the girl who was supposedly driving it. I've seen pictures of her and she's a total babe!!!!! She also works as a model. What pissed off the car dealership was that they tried several times to contact him via phone, email and texts and he's completely ignored them. When the media approached the girl about this, she denied even knowing who Zack Kassian was, nor hearing about any lawsuit.

Today, the Senators traded forward Alex Chiasson to the Flames for defenceman Patrick Sieloff.

In other news, Lars Eller told the Washington media that he was relieved to be playing in Washington and extremely happy he would be playing center, which is his natural position. Michel Therrien rarely made him play center during his years in Montreal.

In Montreal, Marc 'Bargain Bin' Bergevin continues to be criticized not only for giving up too much for a 5'10" third-liner, but especially for not doing more this past weekend. Complaints include the fact he drafted a defenceman (another Russian!) when a forward would have been preferable, and not drafting any Quebecers or players from the LJMQ in the entire draft. I must admit that not drafting any french-speaking players throughout the 2-day event is surprising.

But what has really pissed off the fans is the fact Shaw cost them two second-rounders, picks that could have been used to draft Quebecers such as Pascal Laberge and Samuel Girard.

He's not deserving IMHO
