Fantastic WC final game:
Croatia no longer under the radar as an elite WC team
This WC re-defined Pogba as the best two-way player in the world
It's also the coming-out party for Mbappe. France will not have to wait another 20 years to win its 3rd WC trophy with him and Pogba in the lineup.

My post-tournament power rankings:

1) France
2) Belgium
3) Croatia
4) Brazil
5) Uruguay

No England in the top 5. They benefited from the luck of the draw. When it came time to play aqainst the best teams, they were exposed for their inexperience.

...This WC re-defined Pogba as the best two-way player in the world...

Not so sure about that...Pogba is a very volatile talent...He wore out his welcome with Juventus in the Serie A league...Juventus basically got rid of him because of his unpredictable play and volatile character!...he became a misfit....a team distraction...Pogba is a borderline Neymar case in terms of character...perhaps one notch below!

However, hats off to the "Petit Napoléon" Didier Deschamps who was able to tame Pogba and make him a believer of a system that Deschamps imposed and that he was able to sell to his players....otherwise you never know what type of performance you will get from Pogba!...bottom line is that the French players and Pogba went to war with "Le Petit Napoléon"!

The primary reason I picked France to go all the way was because of Deschamps....an intangible...something a herd of sheep would not have see coming from a mile away...or see from stats sheet that "bean counters" use!

Pogba is a big time player- that third goal was all Pogba from the pass in to the goal when he caught up with the offense. He was the best midfielder on the pitch today and can play for anyone in any league and ditto with Mbappe.

Pogba a big time player when he wants to and if he fits in a system that suits him...take a look at it from a historical point view...or from a background check point of view...something you should know about EB!!!

Don't look at it from one game or from a "johnny come lately" american baseball or basketball fan point of view!

Congratulations, Sharkman, I believe you are the winner of our little competition ...

... but you're a little hard on Pogba, he's been nothing like Neymar, stupid haircuts aside. The guy was a complete no-ego team player for France .... and Mourinho will be channeling that for ManU, you can be sure ...

Sharkman,

You are way off on Pogba, he is unselfish and yet a main man player. It's very hard to be both. On that third goal you could see his teammates were just waiting for him to come into the play, even though he initiated the action with a long perfect pass to Mbappe.

No big deal about the competition Meta...it could have gone either way with many MERB members in the running! At least it re-invigorated the sports thread because with the incompetence of the HABS the sports thread on MERB has been very dismal indeed!...and many thanks Doc Holiday for blasting the HABS galore!

This has been the most lively sports thread on MERB this year....and thank god because I am not sure where MERB is also going in terms of SP reviews because it's also been quite pathetic compared to what it used to be!

No, Pogba was a little lost in the first half; for me, best players today were Greizmann for France and Perisic for Croatia ....

Since the top South American countries (Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay) went from "contenders" to "pretenders", we will not have to wait for 4 years for a rematch of the World Cup since the European countries are now the dominant contenders.

The European Cup in 2020 will essentially be a continuation (Part II) of the 2018 World Cup!

Ah! Ah!...Brazil is always the favorite no matter what...it's like a broken samba record...pretty depressing and out of tune with reality!...
it's good for the bookmakers because they will always make money from sheeps!

What about 2026. Soccer is growing in the united states pretty much over all other sports. Will there be enough time for a first USA WC winner?

Good point Jalimon...it was supposed to be growing from 1994 when the WC was held in the USA...and where is the USA today in terms of WC contention???...nowhere to be seen...nada...ziltch..kaput!

It's going to take a long time (several generations) to supplant "american beisbol" and I say that sarcastically, football, basketball, and even hockey for that matter to get a quality USA WC football contender out there...but the raw talent is certainly there!

Until star players win a WC for their country, there will always be detractors. Now that Pogba has won a WC trophy, critics will now show greater appreciation for his rare talent. He is no Neymar because firstly, Neymar hasn't won anything and secondly, Pogba is not going for a Hollywood Oscar on the field.
