Considering the actual team in place for the Habs , maybe Jim Montgomery was just not interested in getting thrown in the city’s furnace. He is well aware of how things are going here and how the medias have a magnifying effect on everything concerning the situation with the team.
It’s possible. To be honest i don’t even think the Habs even considered signing him. I firmly believe that Gorton-Hughes would rather lose games this season in order to improve their odds in the 2025 entry draft. They’d prefer picking in the top 5 than in the top 15. Winning is not one among their priorities this season. Of course publicly they won’t admit this or else they’d risk the building emptying out if the fans knew the actual truth.
As for Monty the Bruins did confirm that they had tried to extend him during the offseason. Now people are speculating that either the Bruins were not ready to accept his contractual demands or maybe he simply preferred to let his current contract expire & see what his options were. I wouldn’t be surprised if he felt that the current Bruins management team weren’t easy to work with (especially Cam Neely) and simply considered there were easier markets to work in out there. He was also likely looking at job security which the Bruins may not have been crazy about.
Monty got this yesterday when the Blues gave him a guaranteed 5-year contract. And considering how much they wanted him the Blues likely made him one of the league’s highest paid coaches. Monty also knows the area & the organization having once played for the Blues & was hired by Doug Armstrong just a few years ago to be one of Craig Berube’s assistants prior to being hired by the Bruins. It seems that the best-case scenario just happened for Montgomery & he probably can’t believe it happened so fast!
As for Doug Armstrong he has no regrets about firing Drew Bannister since hiring a quality coach like Monty is a chance that rarely presents itself & when you can seal the deal now you do not hesitate. By the way considering what a fantastic job Pascal Vincent is doing in his first season coaching Laval i’d be very surprised if another team doesn’t snatch him up prior to mext season. This would be very unfortunate for the Habs simce he fits the perfect profile of what the franchise looks at when looking at hire a head coach.
