I plan to see this but will stay away from Sherbrook and go either NE or SW of the city to avoid the crowds. Supposedly the entire event lasts 2:20 from entering and exiting the sun so plan to arrive around 2:00pm. On Amazon you can find the proper eyewear for around $20, heard Walmart or Canadian tire also may have something. I plan to wait until I get a proper weather forcast to make sure it will not be a cloudy day and then place my order. The areas will be crowded, in Texas they are closing schools and recommend people should stock up on necessitie like water as they expect 100,000 plus visitors in each major center it passes through and may sell out of certain items.

20 years?!? You wish!

The next comparable ones will be on July 23rd 2093 (annular eclipse, 87% visibility from MTL) and then on May 3rd 2106 (total solar eclipse, 95% visibility from MTL).

But if you‘re looking for the next true total eclipse with 100% visibility from MTL, such as the one happening on April 8th, well… you better make sure to take those vitamins… cause that won’t happen until July 17th 2205!!!

You guys do you, but I cleared my schedule and bought some ISO 12312 certified protective eyewear!

On the other hand, if your photo guy really knows his stuff, I’m pretty sure he could take advantage of the unique lighting provided by the eclipse (prior to/after) to come up with some truly distinctive shots. I’d check in with him if I were you!

Best to go to the South Shore to see it best, directly south of the Island. Laval is too far north, Eclipse will be Partial from Laval. Southern tip of Montreal Island is ok. The Sun has to be 100 % covered to see it best. Even 99.5 % isn't the same as 100 %. Weather looking ok, so far. Maybe some people will still have no power by then.

I've driven to South Carolina in 2017 to see the last eclipse and I highly recommend watching this one.
The most important things to have in mind are:
  • Be the closest to the center of the path of totality possible. At least inside of it. You'll get more time to observe the totality
  • Make sure you see the sun! Get away from any possible clouds
  • Get away from human made lights. The nightsky is always more beautiful the further you get from cities
  • Treat the sun like you treat it normally(don't look at it) unless you are in either of these 2 conditions :
    • You wear the official eclipse glasses
    • The sun is totally covered by the moon
Longish video for nerds : Smarter every day Eclipse
