2001 Swatch Diaphane One Carousel Tourbillon
APRIL 2, 2014 BY STEPHEN LEAVE A COMMENT

Swatch is perhaps the most famous brand of Swiss watch (sorry, Rolex!) but they’re not known for luxury timepieces of high horology. No, Swatch is the brand that saved the Swiss industry, sold millions of watches, became a cultural touchpoint, and enabled the most powerful and profitable watch cartel the world has even known. That’s why this watch is so surprising!

Swatch is king of limited-edition watches, launching a dozen or more every year for decades. But the 2001 Swatch Diaphane One was perhaps the most shocking of all: Costing more than ten times more than any other model, the Diaphane One boasted a rotating movement variously called a Tourbillon, Karusel, and Carousel Tourbillon though actually neither of these. It was high horology and pricey luxury in a sleek plastic and aluminum package that was unmistakably Swatch!

The Swatch Diaphane One was a breakthrough innovation and very Swatch all at once. Tourbillon movements feature a rotating escapement to counteract the force of gravity on the time-keeping heart of the watch. Although not technically necessary in modern watches, tourbillons give manufacturers bragging rights due to their complexity. A carousel is similar in concept but slightly different in execution.

The fact that this is the pinnacle of horology is why it was shocking for Swatch to get in on this game. But their Diaphane One isn’t really a carousel or tourbillon. In the Swatch, most of the movement is mounted on a plate that revolves twice per hour. This is not only much slower than a true tourbillon but also much less technically elegant. But it’s still impressive!

The Swatch Diaphane One was released in 2001 in a limited edition of 2222 pieces, of which 222 were a limited-limited-edition for the Place Vendome in Paris. Priced at a nosebleed-inducing €3,330, the Swatch Diaphane One was nevertheless snapped up rapidly by Swatch fans, with many sitting in vaults in “new old stock” condition to this day.

For a while, prices on the Swatch Diaphane One rocketed upward, with reports of sales as high as €8,000 in contemporary discussions. But this collector market was disrupted in 2006 when Swatch reissued the movement in an even pricier Diaphane One Turning Gold edition. Today, those are the creme de la creme of Swatch, with the original Diaphane One somewhat diminished.

On April 25, 2014, Auctionata will be auctioning off Diaphane One number 504, with bidding starting at just €900. This isn’t an indication of the final price (Auctionata is often wildly off in their estimates) but it’s not likely to go for ten times that… If you’re a Swatch fanatic, now’s your big chance!

A pleasure to own

A watch without its papers and box is worthless!half value gone there !!!
Hello marc7

I always keep the watches and papers and boxes at a different location .
A safety precaution because connaisseurs will not go for high end time pieces that titles are mysterious .
And when talking half the value it is very generous most of the time 10% is all someone will get .

Cheers

Automatic refers to a self-winding mechanical movement, e.g. a mechanical rotor winds up the main spring of the power reserve, which feeds into the mechanical escapement.
Kinetic refers to the same mechanical rotor, but its action is to recharge the supercap / battery that powers a quartz movement.

thanks. i gues that mean that automatic watch in thery will lass longer (lifetime) then kinetic because kinetic charges a battery and batterys need to be replace eventualy.

Louis Vuitton The High-End Watch Maker?

http://www.forbes.com/sites/arielad...lever-one-at-that-with-the-updated-spin-time/

Louis Vuitton is among the world’s most recognizable luxury brands but few people know them as watch makers. Ask men and women on the streets of any major cosmopolitan city what they feel about the famous “monogram” brand and they will offer imagery of high-end bags, luggage, shoes, and possibly fashion. Watches are such an exclusive part of the company’s products that many of their stores don’t even carry the timepiece collection. Nevertheless, watches have been part of the Louis Vuitton collection for over a decade.

It all started with the Tambour – a case design that evolved in a range of models both at (relatively speaking) entry level prices to ultra-high-end models costing well north of $100,000. This latter segment has become the most interesting and borrows from the talents that exist in the larger LVMH corporate group that owns several dedicated watch making companies. Because of the “LVMH Family” Louis Vuitton has some very unique resources available when making not just high-end watches, but high-end complicated watches.

So not only hand bags for demoiselles

And the opposite of that beautiful Ulysses Nardin Astrolabium !! A skull watch that doesn't show the minutes !

HYT who use liquid to indicate the time . An ingenious concept and spectacular mechanic !
But this is for the comic aficionados.
Collectible I wonder ! Too small of a market .
I like the red one .

Ulysse Nardin's "Trilogy of Time" Set

Hello all
One of the best Trilogy of watches
Ulysse Nardin's
"Trilogy of Time" Set,

http://www.p178host.com/0tp178/mh/Trilogy_set/Trilogy_set.html

Twenty years ago, in 1983, Ulysse Nardin was a company that shared a fate very common in that time's Swiss watch industry, which was in the middle of what today is called the "quartz crisis": It had a long and rich tradition, but no future. Luckily, Ulysse Nardin was saved from becoming a chapter in the "gone, but not forgotten"-book of watchmaking, when Rolf Schnyder purchased the company. He knew that the only chance to save UN would be by claiming a place among the top manufacturers immediately and successfully. For this purpose, a radically new and hitherto unseen wristwatch was needed.
The rest is legendary: Together with Dr. Ludwig Oechslin, UN produced an astronomical wristwatch, the Astrolabium, which amazed the public when it was presented in 1985, only two years after Rolf Schnyder took over the helm. Three years later, the Planetarium followed, and in 1992 the Tellurium completed the "Trilogy of Time", which has achieved a nearly mythical status in the world of horology.

To celebrate the twentieth anniversary of his fateful purchase of Ulysse Nardin, Rolf Schnyder decided to reward himself with a special edition of an exclusive Trilogy set:

The cases of all three watches is made of platinum, but this is not the only thing making the new Trilogy set so special. The design of the watches has been reworked in order to offer a perfect match: The diameters of the two smaller ones, the Astrolabium and the Planetarium, has been increased to 41.5mm, so the difference to the larger Tellurium (43mm) has become less noticeable.

The new Astrolabium

Immediately apparent, however, is the new design of the dials: Matching tones of silver, grey and metallic black offer a breathtaking contrast with the platinum's shine.

Planetarium

The colour has been applied on the metal parts by galvanizing. Of course the central design element of the Tellurium still is the Earth globe, produced in cloisonné enamel technique.

Tellurium with cloisonné enamel Earth 'dial'

A very senseful change, compared with the standard Trilogy watches, is the anti-reflective coating, applied to both sides of the domed sapphire crystals. This makes it possible to enjoy the metallic shine of the 'dials' without any disturbing reflections.

The movements of all three watches, are delicately chased and skeletonized by the hands of masters.

Only 99 Trilogy sets are made, offered in an exclusive leather case with three integrated, battery-powered watch-winders. Thus the lucky owner will have a view on a very special model of the universe, whenever he opens the case. It shows the cosmos, presented as a vision of two very special men: Ludwig Oechslin and Rolf Schnyder. Happy anniversary, Mr. Schnyder!
