Went to the Keg, had the Peppercorn NY Strip. Started drinking and felt like continuing... 2 pints of Rickard's White and a Johnnie Walker Blue = blew up my budget but it was pretty damned good. First time having JWB and it was quite good. Also had a piece of chocolate cake... needless to say, I'm stuffed and have a little buzz!

Might try somewhere else tomorrow, my last day here...

Link, the JWB alone would have put you over your budget, why'd you go that route? LOL. I went to the Keg last time I was in town and had a very enjoyable dinner. Steak, crab & shrimp combo. That and a few Heinekens ran me about $60+tip. Also the talent at the bar and working behind it was quite nice.

Look behind you.
Gibby's in the Old Port is a good bet. 50 may cover it, again depends on drinking.

How about Mr. Steak next to Strip Club Downtown. Just kidding. It's horrible.

Another option in the downtown area is Vargus (corner Universitie and Rene Levesque), but it's just Ok.

In the downtown area for an affordable steak, FireGrill (on Stanley) and Keg (Rene Levesque) that people have already mentioned are decent.

Dundee's on corner Crescent and Maisoneuve is OK. More casual than the others but probably less expensive too.

My favorites steak restaurants in Montreal are Gibby's, Moishes and the Keg. The Keg makes a solid NY strip. If you want to spend a little more Gibby's is great. Moishes has the worst ambience but their food is very good and they do a good job with the potatoes. I think they have a potato sampler you can order with the steak including various stuffed, baked and fried potatoes and possibly a knish type thing as well.

I agree. I'm a big steak guy and for me The Keg is where it's at. I really like the ambience and you guys are right, happy hour is quite good. When I was dating more and not just being an SP nut, I would often take my dates there. Gibby's is also very good, but pricey.

Je suis allé une fois dans un steak house sur la rue Guy dans le downtown coin St Catherine. Je crois que c'était a un coin du Metro Guy et c'était pas mal du tout. Une pancarte jaune et noir BB quelque chose je crois.

The Bar-B-Barn used to be my favorite place to eat at back in the late 80's/early 90's. Everytime i'd go there, there were lineups outside. The last time i stopped by was two years ago. It was practically empty & didn't feel the same.

My three favorite places to eat a good steak are The Keg, Gibby's and Moishes. Gibby's is slightly pricier than The Keg, but still very good. Moishes possibly has the best steak of the three (but not by much), but i hated the atmosphere. I also hated the fact my dinner guest wasn't that hungry after all & ate only half the steak i wound up paying big $$ for.

Speaking of expensive dinner dates when i am in montreal i normally eat alone because i travel by myself but approx 4 years ago i wanted to try the queue de cheval but it wasn't the type of place that i thought i would be comfortable eating alone so i invited an indie that i knew well to join me. I knew the place was expensive but i had no idea how pricey they were. We each had an appetizer, she had lobster, i had steak. We split one slice of cheesecake for desert. I had two beer, she had about 2 glasses of house wine. She also wanted a bottle of sparkling water. It was the only time in my life that i was somewhat shocked by the bill, with tip it set me back a cool $540. I have never gone back because in my opinion there steak is not that much better then the kegs if at all, but you sure pay thru the nose for it.

A few years ago, i went to a Phil Collins concert at the Bell Centre & happened to sit in the same section with a group of bikers & their wives/girlfriends. I must admit that i kind of felt out of place sitting among them, and a few minutes after i sat down, the one sitting next to me said (in french): "We'll let you sit here for now, but once the concert starts, we want you to get the fuck away from here." I was taken aback & my blood pressure went up. I replied, "I paid for this seat! This is where i'm supposed to sit!" He looked surprised & asked to see me ticket. He then gave it back to me & didn't say anything. A few minutes later, one of their guys was on his way to get a round of beers & the guy next to me told him to get me one, and asked me what i drank. I politely declined the offer, but he wouldn't take no for an answer, and told the other guy to bring me a Canadian.

We then began to converse & he mentionned that they had all just come out of 'Queue de Cheval' and were all feeling pretty good, having ordered over 7 bottles of wine (there were a group of approx. 8-10 people). I told him that i was staying at the Sheraton, which is located next door to that restaurant, and always wanted to go eat there but never had the chance yet. He replied that the food was so-so & not worth the money i'd be spending there, mentionning how much it had just cost them (if i remember correctly, it was over $1000). He added that they usually don't go there, but that the location was perfect since they planned to attend the concert after dinner.

I later went back & got a round of beer for the group. They appreciated the gesture & we ended up having a great time at the concert, which was supposedly Phil Colllins' final tour. I believe he did tour again later.

I had an excellent steak, 2 Pints of beer, a Johnnie Walker Blue and a piece of chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream+strawberry sauce at the Keg. $82+tip. The Peppercorn NY Strip was $31.95 so most of the other expense was the drinks and dessert. It was worth the expense. $250 meal? I can buy groceries for a month with that, no thank you.

I'd like to try the Keg the next time I'm in Montreal. I was on their website and noticed there are two locations in Montreal, one in the Vieux Port area and one in Place Ville Marie. Is one location better than the other, or are they about the same?

I've only eaten at one of the aforementioned places, Gibby's. It seemed expensive until the steak arrived, a portion large enough for two. It was great, I foolishly ate the whole thing.

Given that The Keg is a large chain, the food is probably indistinguishable from one location to the next. They're BC based and have 100 locations, some 20 of which are in the western US.

Just ate at a local Keg, everything was a buck or so cheaper than Montreal, although my steak wasn't cooked perfectly to my liking as it was in Montreal... luck of the draw I guess. Still was a very good meal. NY Strip and a drink was $36+tax+tip.

The Keg is always packed, it's a good value for your dollar. You can overpay at the Queue if you like but my experience at the Keg in the PVM was excellent.

Hostesses are always super hot too.

One of my ex's and I went to the Keg on our first date and it was amazing. The food, the wine the atmosphere were all top notch. Would not hesitate to ever take a date there again. Went to Queue a couple times and had the same quality food but 4 times the price and the view sucked as we were looking at the Bell Centre for three hours. The Keg all the way boys and girls! :thumb:
