Sometimes, but don't most diabetics need to watch the bread intact (buns) and fries?

I've seen diabetics gorge on sugar-free cookies and thinking is that really working.

One of my great uncles, a gay man, had a partner who was diabetic who would consume large amounts of bacon at breakfast. Most commercial bacons have a large amount of sugar and I always wondered whether this was a good idea for him to be doing. This man was obese all of his life but he lived until age 70. He died suddenly of a heart attack. I think that diabetics not taking care of themselves eventually have the weight, the strain on the heart and the high blood pressure catch up with them and they succumb to heart attacks and strokes as they get older.

If you watch the movie “Supersize Me”, it essentially crystallizes the reasons for the epidemic of obesity. I believe that since the release of this film in around 2004 or so, things have started to change although we are not noticing the results just yet. While Bloomberg was Mayor of New York City, he pushed through a law requiring chain restaurants to post calorie counts of all the food they are serving. I always found this to be deeply amusing and I must admit going to a Haagen Das in NYC and ordering 3 scoops of ice cream and assiduously ignoring the calorie count for that item. I was afraid to look. However since those days I have reduced my carb and sugar intake dramatically.

As you get older it becomes harder to control weight unless you are disciplined with your diet. And to do what all of us do- pay for sex and women- and maintain consistency in our erections and our erectile function, we all have to be mindful of these duties to keep the penis in good working order. It needs to be serviced and maintained just like a car engine.

Many good and interesting posts in this thread.

Personally the highest i've ever weighed was 230 lbs. It was just a few years ago and I was about 30-40 lbs overweight but i felt good. But i realized i was overweight and it wasn't good for my health. So when one of my former colleagues suggested we both enter a weight-loss contest pitting one against the other for 6 months i jumped at the chance, knowing fully well he'd likely end up winning the contest since he weighed 300 lbs and he'd end up losing more pounds since his goal was to get around 230 lbs.

I surprised myself and did quite well, bringing down my weight to the 212 lbs level. However, no matter how much cardio i'd do on the threadmill or watch what i ate, i couldn't bring my weight down lower.

But i was also lifting weights at the time and kept on lifting weights until a year ago, where i stopped everything. But i became very active and ate less. I last weighed myself and to my surprise i weighed 182 lbs. I also felt stronger than ever. However one day i decided to start lifting weights again and could no longer lift what i used to be able to lift until a year ago. Shockingly although i felt stronger i was actually weaker!!

A month ago i resumed training again. Daily sessions on the threadmill followed by a weight lifting session. Today i feel great!! I can also lift the amount i was able to lift last year! However my weight is back over the 200 lbs level. I attribute it to a bigger muscle mass since there's no way i have more body fat than i did a few months ago when i weighed 20 lbs less than i do now.

By the way a few years ago i was watching a tv show which had a panel of doctors on there and they were saying that there was at the time a rise in the number of overweight Americans and that it was quickly becoming a national epidemic since being overweight leads to many health problems (diabetes, heart disease, back and joint problems, etc). It seems that we're already there.

Diabetes is making big pharma so rich you would not believe.

Go to walt disney you will be amazed at the number of motorized (or not) walking chairs.

My dad is 79. We still walk the course on our bi-weekly golf game. The solution is there if you do not train or do regular sports, just walk!

Cheers,

I sometimes take a look at the Trump rallies and it's incredible how many fat people attend those rallies. Even the kids are fat! Looking around at the crowds i'd estimate that half the people there could easily pass as being obese. Shameful!

Something can be said about leading an active life. I know many people who's health started to decline soon after they stopped being active and became couch potatoes. Speaking for myself i've become considerably more active over the past year and i feel great!! That's the key to a continuous healthier lifestyle: remain active and try to exercise at least 20 minutes every day.

Doc do you remember the Printemp érable in Quebec few years ago? Students would protest non stop against higher school fees. Do you remember many night all students rallied in Montreal naked. Those were huge protestation with 80% student nude or almost nude.. I remember thinking my god this generation of students had definitely skipped gym class!!

Thanks Doc for your elitist puke.

I assure you there was a lot of overweight Hillary voters. The Dems are really good at hiding them at the rallies.

I assure you we are all aware of this obesity epidemic. We've known this for awhile. And yes, it's ridiculous how many people conduct their outside activities in a small, motorized vehicle to avoid walking.

Remember the movie Wall-E. It is now 10 years old.

Careful guys, you're throwing around a lot of stuff about food and dieting.

- I don't believe skim milk has added sugars. It tastes sweeter naturally because the fat is stripped out.
.

Sambuca - According to this article, (3rd paragraph down) by a Harvard professor, sugar is often added to skim milk to make up for the loss of taste when fat is removed from whole milk. https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2015/oct/09/low-fat-whole-milk-usda-dietary-guidelines

Bignasty if you look at the stats Mexico has a huge obesity problem. The 2 last generation drank way to much soda and fried tacos is kind of the norm in rural mexico...

You are correct. According to this article Mexico has now passed the U.S. as the most obese country in the world. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Obesity_in_Mexico
I'm now wandering why I noticed so few overweight people in Mexico City. it may be due to the fact that everyone seems to walk everywhere because of the congested traffic and perhaps the high altitude of 7,500 ft. Also, I haven't visited in over 10 years and the above article attributes the rapidly growing obesity problem in Mexico to processed foods.

Look behind you.
The internet and video games caused this, along with no parents at home to cook a good meal.

Childhood overweight and obesity has been rising steadily in Canada in recent decades. ... Increases were highest among youth, aged 12 to 17 years, with overweight and obesity more than doubling for this age group, from 14 per cent to 29 per cent.*2. Currently, 59% of adult Canadians are either overweight or obese.

Not just in the US and Mexico.

There is no excuse for being overweight between ages 12 and 17. I weighed 125 pounds dripping wet as a high school senior and had a 30 inch waist. Strangely though some kids I know who had baby fat in high school are now very fit individuals. Conversely some athletes I know really let themselves go and are disastrous out of shape slobs.

How you live your life has a huge impact- not just diet but substances consumed. Was just reading about how Country singer Gretchen Wilson, who gave us the song “Rednecked Woman”, just resolved her criminal case arising from a disturbance she created at Bradley airport after performing in CT. She was pretty hot when the “Rednecked Woman” video was released in 2004, but all the pills and booze and chicken fried steak must have taken a toll because she looks very chubby and ragged in her mugshot. I understand the life of these performers is a lot of pills and booze and hotel and fast food but it’s a shame to see such a attractive woman lose it so quickly.

.

- Artificial sweeteners don't make your body think it's starving. It triggers an expectation and craving for calories.

Don't overcomplicate this. Hungry101's doctor is right "Americans aren't fat because of eating fat. It is because of sugars and simple carbs." That leads us to processed foods as a culprit. We should walk down the street more often as well.

Sambuca - your not my physician are you? That is exactly what he told me about the cravings.

BTW - On Keto you are never hungry and you never feel too full either.

I have been to Mexico probably 25 times in the last 10 years. Around the quintana roo no too much Mexican are fat. But it's fucking getting there. 10 years ago I would get fresh tacos and quesadillas out of street vendors. Now really the norm in rural mexico has gone to fried and deep fried tacos... A fucking nightmare... At least many place along the cost you still get nice Ceviche and real fresh tacos.

We all think USA is the worst of the worst regarding how people are so fat because we drive down there, stop at a waffle house only to discover fat client and fat employees... But It's as bad in Mexico and Canada...

All things in moderation, I know quite a few people that admit they eat a family size bag of chips alone and regularly.

Funny, I know quite a few people who admit to drinking a half bottle of Johnny Walker alone and regularly. I advise them to drink JW Red and save some bucks (or loonies).

Latin culture, it's their way of living too.

Culture can and does change. Examples include support for gay marriage in many rich countries or the recent abortion referendum in Ireland.

And then there is this:
Mediterranean children stopped eating the Mediterranean diet, and they now have the highest obesity rates in Europe. Wonkblog, Washington Post, May 30 2018
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news...now-have-the-highest-obesity-rates-in-europe/

"A senior official at the World Health Organization pronounced the Mediterranean diet dead last week -- a casualty of changing lifestyles in countries such as Greece, Spain and Italy.
New data from the organization shows that children in southern Europe have obesity rates higher than 40 percent. In a presentation Thursday to health officials at the European Congress on Obesity, João Breda, the program manager for nutrition, physical activity and obesity at the WHO Regional Office for Europe, blamed the incursion of sodas and snacks into the region’s traditionally low-sugar, produce-heavy diet."

In my head
Just a few weeks ago, as I was traveling on I-40 near Kingman, AZ, I stopped for coffee at a McDonalds. There must have been 20-30 customers in the place. *Everyone* was obese - every single one of them. The children were little balloons on feet, parents were big balloons on feet. One of the McDonald's employees was morbidly obese (at least 300 pounds) and was huffing and puffing his way around the store clearing tables. For a couple seconds there, I thought I was in some sort of Twilight Zone...
