The ArriveCan scandal, for those who have been following, is a great example of government waste that borders on corruption (the employment of useless middlemen who take a 30% cut). And that, is, if course, the proverbial tip of the iceberg.

You don't use a machete to trim the fat. You use it to eviscerate congressionally funded federal departments like USAID, EPA, HHS, and CFPB that help and protect people.

The Middle East Forum is a well known anti-islam think tank run by its islamophobic founder Daniel Pikes. Whatever aid that was questionable or misdirected over USAID's 60 year history confirms the need to very carefully vet where the aid is given. This will help ensure USAID's $40 billion dollar annual budget only goes for humanitarian and life-saving efforts. Shutting down the entire agency is a cruel and excessive response to a manageable concern.

I have not read the entire thread and trying to not be a troll and to stay away from trolls (2025 resolution).

I do think Canada needs a DOGE equivalent, maybe softer but with resolve and results.

The government is overflowing with paper pushers but things take longer and longer.

Taxes are sky high but our main services (schools, hospitals, passports, permits, transit, roads, culture) are falling apart.

Something has got to give and increasing government productivity could help. Not the entire solution but a useful step.

I think most citizens support government reform, increased efficiency, and more accountability for waste and graft. That takes thought, time, and effort, and not the knee-jerk reaction to burn the agency to the ground. In the U.S. government agencies have Inspector Generals who are tasked with oversight responsibility. Rather than expand the efforts of the IGs or introduce other means to increase efficiency, trump fired 17 IGs. Trump and Musk would rather destroy the agencies than try to reform them.

Am torn on this. I hate the burn it all down approach that Musk is using but I also know all government efficiency efforts in the US and Canada have led to zero improvement.

A funny example of waste, small scale: there was a scandal at a school in montreal (bedford) where a group of teachers were terrorizing students.

Revealed today in our newspapers: all these teachers are no longer in school (good) BUT ARE STILL GETTING FULL PAY AND BENEFITS!
