Well since everyone is starting best of lists, I thought I'd do this one a little differently. The movies we see in the theater aren't always the same as the version we watch on DVD at home. Or sometimes we discover a movie on DVD that we never thought of spending the money to go and see at your fave movie house. So I thought I'd start this thread to honour the favourite DVDs of the decade. They don't have to be the best movies or works of art, just your favourites.

So I'll start it off with the one I watched tonight, which gave me the idea for this thread.

Almost Famous - Director's Edition - aka Untitled: Almost Famous the Bootleg Cut- 2000

The film that made Kate Hudson a movie star and has what I feel is one of the best rock soundtracks of any movie ever made. If you grew up in the '70's or just love rock music, this movie is not to be missed. I hope that when it's finally released on Blu-ray it'll include the deleted Stairway to Heaven scene which was removed due to a rights issue. But it is included as a DVD extra without music so you can play your own copy of the song during the scene to see how it would have played in the film.

http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0181875/

And I'll also select the Lord of the Ring Extended versions that greatly expand on the theatrical versions of a book that was said to be unfilmable. If you don't know the story by now, you should be ashamed of yourself! :p

Anyone else?

"Saving Private Ryan". On a big lcd tv, with the surround sound cranked. The opening battle scenes just blow me away.

Ah yes I loved Saving Private Ryan. My favorite however is "Sideways." What would I do without this movie? When I am out wining and dining pretentious wine snobs I just become Paul Giamatti. When I'm in Montreal I become his buddy Jack played by Thomas Hayden Church

As curious as it seems, i've yet to see this movie, even though i've had it in my dvd collection for nearly 2 years. Maybe i'll watch it later today....

Some great choices in the lot.

The question then becomes ... at what point does owning boxed sets put one into the stratosphere of diminishing returns? I mean, how many of these will you actually watch more than once?

I don't own many sets but based on the ever-growing number of channels and entertainment options, I'd be tempted to rent rather than own. And even at that ...

The ones I've enjoyed include:

Lost
The Shawshank Redemption
The Count of Monte Cristo
Mad Men
The Prestige
Lawrence of Arabia
Gone with the wind
Ken Burns Baseball
The Godfather
Lord of the Rings

and last but not least ...

24 :D

Bourne Trilogy on Blu-Ray
Fletch, Fletch Lives finally on DVD
Pink Panther boxed set

Forgot Bourne. Another great set.

I haven't been following the outcome of the format wars between
Blu-Ray and its competitors. Has Blu-Ray won out? I've held
off getting into Blu-Ray as I wasn't certain if they'd be the
industry standard.

I think it's safe to assume that Blu-Ray is the standard now.

The competing format, HD-DVD, was pretty much abandoned in early 2008. Analogous to Betamax.

Thanks Bond.

I'd be curious to know how much better Blu-Ray is
vs. your standard HD player.

Separate question for Doc Holliday: what is the "The Time Tunnel (vol 1 & 2)"?

Please don't tell me it has to do with time $pent in someone's vagina.:D

The Time Tunnel is a mid-1960's sci-fi series from Irwin Allen, the creator of other semi-schlocky gems such as Lost in Space, Land of the Giants and Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea (master of the "insert bland one-dimensional characters in high-concept environments" ideas). Time Tunnel is a much dumbed-down precursor to Quantum Leap, but with two travellors.

as for me, some of my favorite DVD treasures:
-Band of Brothers mini-series.
-LOST
-HEROES, the first season
-Justice League Unlimited
-Clone Wars, the 2003 cartoon version by Genndy Tartakovsky (Samurai Jack...don't laugh, rent it!!)
-SUPERMAN 2, the Richard Donner version...
-WATCHMEN, the director's cut
-FIGHT CLUB, ZODIAC and Se7en, all by David Fincher

Band of Brothers is one of my all-time favorite mini-series. I've probably seen it 7 or 8 times. I have to thank an sp i saw many years ago for that suggestion.

Lost is my favorite tv series of all-time. It's possibly the most ingenious one yet!

I loved the first season of 'Heroes'. They lost me after a few episodes of season 2. I haven't gone back.

We like some of the same things, Doc...And by the way, don't take my 'analysis' of Time Tunnel in a wrong way, it was one of my favorite shows as a small fry. Heck, I crushed big-time on its leading lady, Lee Merryweather, graduating to prepubescent lust a few months later when I first saw her wearing that glorious leather catsuit in the first Batman movie (siiiiiiiggggghhhhh). I actually own many DVD's of dubious origins, such as the 3 different versions of the original Night Of The Living Dead movie sitting right next to my precious Sergio Leone classics...

3 different versions of the original Night Of The Living Dead movie ...

A very detailed documentary detailing all the production, interviews, original filming sites, behind the scenes stuff, etc..etc...etc...is in the final stages of editting as of about six months ago. They had a big party in NYC celebrating the wrap-up.

The just discovered 1970s childhood psycho videos of the guys who put this thing together...... seriously funny. All 8mm video footage, garden shears, pitchforks, knives, blood, death, people being hit by cars, etc..etc..lots of experimentation....

Note: "Survivial of the Dead" due out this Spring.
