I've just read yet another review where the term "girl next door" is used to describe someone.

I'm wondering if this is just a nice way to say she's not that good looking?

When you think about it, some of us have girls living next door that are less than desirable or downright ugly. Then again, Maria Sharapova and other smoking hot sexy girls are inevitably the "girl next door" to somebody.
I know it also means that the girl is not dressed to the nine's with heavy makeup, but what is the real meaning of this term?

Girl next door, refers to a look that is more low-maintenance than the "model-type" look. Often, it means she has a natural beauty that doesn't require make-up, she doesn't wear the stripper gear some girls wear and is usually down to earth.

If you watch movies or TV, you will have seen the classic character of the girl next door... Mary Jane Watson from Spiderman, Donna in that 70s' show, Joey from Dawsons Creek, etc...

In a nutshell, not glamorous, unspoiled, sweet-natured, kind of virginal ideal of a woman, cute to gorgeous in a pair of jeans...

Great question! I really don't understand the term either. Of the SP's that I have seen here in Montreal, the one that looked closest to a Supermodel was Karyna of Eleganza.......... the only one not to wear any make-up(I think she had some lip gloss only) for my session...... Karyna of Eleganza. None of the Eleganza Ladies wore stripper-wear, only one of them wore more than light make-up.

My follow up question...... is there such a thing as: "The Supermodel Next Door"???.......... Glamorous, unspoiled, sweet-natured, looks like she IS the ad for whatever clothing she is wearing, turns heads everywhere she goes, but always says hi first, will cook you breakfast- when you crash at her place, still talks to her mom & family, and hates people fussing over her looks all the time.

Fashion models possess particular physiques which are not legion on the escorting scene. The main prerequisite to be a model is to actually "fit' in samples. A girl like Sexy Tamara, as pretty as she is, wouldn't cut it as a model, contrary to some posters' suggestion, because she doesn't meet the minimum 5ft8in standard and also because her surgically enhanced breasts wouldn't fit in clothing samples.

Another prerequisite is to be of the certain type that happens to fill a gap in a model agency's repertoire. Yes, timing...

Being photogenic is a must...

The girl next door type of model exists but is often typecasted for TV commercials or B sitcoms, not fashion runways.

Many runway models are sweet-natured, why wouldn't they be?

I hate to go off on a tangent, but just because a girl is a model doesn't mean she is good looking. I remember anticipating meeting a friends new GF who was a model, and once I met her thinking she must have been a model for fatbikerchicks.com

Agreed.

I worked with a 30 year old who spent her early adulthood as a Parisian runway model. Tall, leggy, cheekbones, photogenic ... but I wouldn't call her all that attractive, exactly. More like distinctive. I had fantasies about several of the women in the office at the time, but she was never one of them.

That said, I would expect a swimsuit model to be pretty hot. It's hard for me to imagine an ugly swimsuit model.

I agree with most of your comments.

Yes, a Supermodel, should also be a great runway model, but with the term supermodel being used so loosely these days, a few so called supermodels don't do runway or aren't good at it. As far as runway models being sweet-natured.......... they are still women and so some are nice & some aren't.

About Montreal women in general, I have met so many beautiful women that were about 5'10", 34(B), 24, 34......... so I do think these women could have modeled if they could hack the rejection and lack of work of the first few years. Most women could never be any kind of model, of those that could, even fewer are cut out to be a runway model........... of supermodels.... who knows why they get to be supermodels?

because someone in the fashion industry decided "young lady, you are it." it's really not any more complicated than that.
