Hotels to avoid?

I used the search function and found threads on what hotels are recommended by you swell folks at Merb. My favorites in the city are the Vogue, Hotel Delamontagne and Hotel Germain.

Let's turn the thread around here...can anyone tell me hotels to avoid? I'm thinking of bidding on a room on my next trip just to mix things up, and I'm a little concerned about getting a bad hotel that way. One time a girlfriend insisted on getting a cheap room in Montreal (I think it was Hotel St. Denis), and it was the worst hotel I have ever stayed at, anywhere, anytime. I'd rather not repeat the experience.

So what hotels do you hate, or what hotels are particularly SP-unfriendly. One thing I like about the Vogue and HDLM is that they have pretty heavy SP traffic and thus there's no trouble with the staff.

Thanks.

the rooms at the Days Inn on Rene Levesque are like small walk in closets... Aside from that, the front desk guy gave my buddy some shit as he walked in with his lady of choice... Luckily for him coming up 6 steps behind was drunk ass me, making quite the scene. So the guy stopped hassling my buddy and moved on to the 6'3" problem jumping on the lobby couch.

EB- I second the " Lord Berri " -Forgive my bad language- Went here about 5-6 years ago with a girl friend ( Not girlfriend ) who was cool enough to go with me to Chez Paree for a while..but that's another story.

I parked in the basement parking they had. I never used my car, I took the metro everywhere when I was there. When I parked I noticed that almost every parking spot had a strange puddle in it. I never thought anything of it. I was going home with my girl friend, and stopped at the border crossing. My friend said " what's on your roof ?" . There was a fucking stain on the roof. I came back to the USA, and showed it to my bodyshop friend. Without batting an eye, he said , did you park under a pipe ? That is drain cleaner that burned a hole right through the paint. he says " I see it all the time from people who park their cars in NYC garages " Fuck !!! My car is only 3 months old !! I call the hotel, ask for the owner, the manager would not give me access to the owner. Said that I should deal with her. I explained that the only way it could have happened was in her garage. I explained the puddle, the drain cleaner, and I said " I have called you at least 5 times from the US. Do you think I would be making this up, and be so persistent ? "

She agreed, I told her that it would cost 450.00 to repaint my roof. She said, I can't pay you back, but I can comp you a weekend " I told her that I wouldaccept the offer, and I got back to her a couple weeks later with my choice. Fucking bitch changed her tune, and said " Ok, the first night is on me " I said what !! Why the fuck would I drive 360 miles for one free night ?? She said , take it or leave it . I told her to go Fuck herself. I told her that I was in the hotel industry for many years, and that she could certainly be proud of her standing to her word. She had nothing to say as I hung up.

I wish I could nail her feet to the ground, and hit her with a nightstick repeatedly. I think she would re-think her decision.

Sorry to vent, I've been waiting YEARS to do this

Best Regards

If only I knew...
Best Western, corner René-Lévesque and St-Laurent: tiny room, If you're over 5'8", carefull walking in the room because TV (13") is hanging on top of the door. Smell of dampness in the room and unidentified gooey stuff leaking from a wall in the room I had. Parking garage extremely small and "twisting" making backing out near impossible, staff stuffing garage almost till the door don't close, making it quite complicated when you realise you're at the "bottom" and have to back-out the entire garage because it's full, with all zig-zag, and no way to turn around...

Clarion on Maisonneuve, near Guy: very old, run down. Dark rooms. Carpet in rooms and corridors is used to the backing at some spots. First room they gave me smelled so bad of smoke I almost puked. Felt like sticking my head in an ashtray! Second room (1 bedroom suite) had "old" smell and bedroom was so small, with 1 double bed, I could barely walk around. Bed also sucked, old and soft, felt like a hammock. When walking in the living room, it's a "split-level" type of arrangment that look not too bad, if the furniture didn't date late 70'-early 80'... No space to park while checking-in, garage entrance on back, tru small private street, making you pray your car won't stall because scary neighborhood... Only good point I found: cute ladies at front desk.

My problem with the Clarion was that when you sat on the foot of the bed, the other end of the bed would flip up like a see-saw. They do lock the doors around 11 pm, IIRC. The elevators are slow too. I would still stay there, though, if I didn't have other options.

The Novotel's elevators lock after 6 pm. Other than that, it's a nice hotel.

Quality Inn on Crescent

It's located somewhere across Hurley's. This place is a dump & only popular with the US college kids coming to Mtl on weekends to party.

Thanks, because I am 6'3".

I looked at Lord Berri as a possibility for my next trip. It's a scratch. This board is great for this kind of stuff. Thanks.

Best Western Europa Downtown 1240 Drummond St. Tiny tiny washroom. Run of the mill room. the kicker. No parking lot. You have to valet in a lot run by very beligerent middle eastern punks. One threatened me. I went to the hotel to complain. They claim there has NEVER been an issue like this before and the manager will call me. Still waiting for that call.

I'm thinking of staying at the Vogue my next trip as it looks amazing and is very central. However, I understand that you need a key for the elevator to get up to your floor, is that an issue for sp's?

It is central and a very, very nice hotel. You can meet the SP on the second floor - there is a lounge area near the elevator and the SP can walk up using the stairs. In the past when I saw escorts there the agencies usually asked me to come out of my room and meet the SP as she arrived at the second floor. I asked them to call me or have the driver call like 5 minutes before she got there.

There is no access to the rooms except through a locked door for which you need a keycard on that second floor.

The SPs don't mind going there as it is a nice hotel and the guests who stay there usually have some spare change.

Hello all,

I stayed at the Vogue once. Its a very nice place for the rate and the room was very nicely decorated...but not much bigger than many cheaper hotels I have been at. Frankly valet parking annoys me and even getting down the narrow street at busy times was a real pain. Overall, for a near equivalent in quality and price to the Vogue I would recommend the Four Points Hotel at the corner of Sherbrooke and Aylmer. Driving access here was much easier and the location is close to the center of the city. But if you don't mind using the metro the Vogue would be fine.

But the Four Points also has valet parking only. Unless it has been updated in the last 2 years, I found it rather run-down when I was last there.

The best worse hotel in Montreal

L'abri du voyageur

It was a cheap room ($40) with a shared bathroom, but this hotel was a great stay for me in Montreal.

No elevators, but I don't mind running up 4 flights of stairs to get to my top floor room. The room was small but tidy, and the building was ancient but very clean. I liked the exposed beams on the ceiling, and the rustic character of wooden floors.

The best aspect of that room was the fact that the main large window opened out onto St. Catherine's street during the Francofolies! I never heard about this festival until I arrived and heard this music concert just outside my window. I just sat there for a few hours listening.

The receptionist was this gorgeous and friendly lady who seemed interested in my impressions about Montreal and her Hotel.

I would recomend this hotel for the rough no frills kind of guy who don't mind walking up and down many flights of stairs and sharing the washroom. I'm a cyclist so this isn't a concern for me at all.

I have been to 5 star hotels before and I don't quite like it much. Who cares about folded tissue paper, toiletries and complimentary robes? I feel like a disabled old person with a napoleonic complex in there.
But that's just my take on Hotels.

It depends on whom you are planning to see. In the past, certain FKS ladies had it on their blacklist. If i remember correctly, i believe they had it included in a post on their board of which hotels to avoid. Maybe things have changed since then.

I stayed there a few times over the past few years and it has happened on a couple of occasions where the girl would go to the front desk after arriving & they'd call me up to ask me if it's okay to let her go to my room. When i'd say yes, they'd either go with her to the elevators and swipe their key or escort her to my floor.

Another time, they dropped off the lady via helicopter onto the hotel's rooftop & she was able to rappel her way down to one of the fire exits on my floor. I'd then get a call from her telling me she's there & i'd go and open the fire exit door for her & let her in. We didn't have to go through this routine when it was time for her to leave, though. I escorted her down to the lobby & helped her get into a taxi.

I saw Michelle of FKS while staying at the Vogue during the summer of 2005 and it was not a problem at that time. With certain other ladies, it may be. If anyone staying there wants to see an FKS lady, I would suggest contacting Giselle in advance before booking the hotel.

I did one time see a lady from another agency who left her cellphone in my room at the Vogue. I got a call later that night on her cellphone which started ringing and scared the hell out of me because I did not know she had left it in my room and it suddenly started ringing. The driver was on the other end of the line and he asked me to take the phone down to the Vogue front desk. I did. The guy at the front desk was laughing his ass off when I told him someone had forgot their cellphone in my room. They seemingly knew what the situation was. Hotel front desk clerks, anyway most of them, know the score.

You're right EB, front desk clerks know and the modus operendus in most place is not to say anything, lucky for us! Even at the Marriott I stay in Mtl, where the front door is locked at 23:00, I was expecting a call from an SP to let me know she was there or from the front desk, since it was past midnight but surprise, knock on my door and she was there, alone. Now, how did she get tru the locked front door without me getting a call? I don't know! ;)

When I visit clients at the Vogue, (or the W, or the Novotel after 6 pm) I usually just go to the front dest and say so-and-so in room X is expecting me. The receptionist then calls the room to confirm and then gives me a card key. They generally assume I am a business aquaintance.

I'm not going to be staying at the Vogue now so not an issue. I decided on one of the boutique hotels in Old Montreal got a good rate for an all inclusive stay - room, breakfast and parking. It pays to do a bit of homework.
