I am glad the old board is back. Hated the new one. It was a nightmare. I even stopped going on this board because of it. The new colors made everything so hard to read and find. And when I click on a thread the last radio button was missing I had to enter the page number manually to go to the end of the thread. Really annoying. Best not to change. I always said if something works best to leave it alone.

I find the new server is very much slower than the old one.
Just logging in takes at least 5 seconds whereas before it was pretty much instantaneously.

Same slow response when accessing the site or when posting.
Hope that can be improved.

How? By pulling the Netherlands to bring it a bit closer to Canada? :) I found the site to be slow as well this morning. Now the speed seems to be ok. Don t forget also that all the traffic is being encrypted now that adds a bit of overhead as well.

I do agree on some points but the only way to see if it floats its to throw it in the water ! I think a bit of patience and lots and lots of support for the transition would have been much more smooth . Also informing all merbites of the rockie road ahead would also helped !
The other question his how heavy was it on the data/per page , how heavy or faster vb5 is compare to vb4 .

I'm ready and would happy to migrate to vb5 by the way ! Was great looking and modern . Vb4 feels like windows 3.11. Microsoft doesn't give any more support for xp !

While I do like this version better, it probably stems partly from familiarity. Given a chance I think everyone would have adapted to the changes.

I think it's best not to move to a new server and upgrade to a different version at the same time. Best not to change too many things at once.
Issue is that VB5 was not configured properly, or wasn't configurable to support some of the features we like that are familiar:
* quick text SEARCH within a forum (or thread)
* proper working PAGER toolbar
* don't need mini-advanced search with useless criteria in FILTER options
* MESSAGE centre that properly shows conversations as threads (they tried, it was poorly implemented)
* multi-QUOTE posts

To name a few.

What Fred/Merb needed was useability testing (UAT) on a non-prod server by seasoned (READ: real) users.

Moving the server and upgrading the software at the same time is usually done simultaneously to avoid two upgrade windows. Sure it could be done in two phases, but many kill two birds with one stone.

I also prefer this older version but I appreciate the added SSL security, considering the topic of this site.

Now I'm getting that annoying message that "Only secure content is being shown" and I have to click on "Show all content" on every link I click on.

Any way to get rid of this? I added the https address to my trusted sites and thought that would do it but I still get the popups.

Maybe just try another browser not... IE, I use Firefox and Chrome.

Server is loading very very fast here even on wireless internet. If you are finding it slow there must be other local issues with your ISP or your hardware.

The speed with which the various sections of the site comes up varies a lot.
Getting from the Chrome homepage to merb.cc took less than a second but then, once I was in the lounge and clicked on this particular thread, it took more than 5 seconds for this thread to load.
Could be that there are ads being pulled in that slow things down - don't know how the site is set up, but the issue is certainly not my ISP or my hardware since I don't get these types of delays with other sites and I also never noticed that type of delay before the site was moved.

After a while, moving back nd forth within the site becomes faster but I assume that's because a lot is now being pulled in from the browser cache.

I'm not saying the site has become so slow as to be unusable - it's just noticably slower than what I was used to previously.

Forum links not working in Firefox

Using Firefox 30, the links that are labelled "Forum" that bring you to the main forum screen are not working. Instead you are directed to a blank page containing the following error:

Not Found

The requested URL /vbulletin/forum was not found on this server.
Apache/2.2.15 (CentOS) Server at merb.cc Port 443

Also trying to access the forum from the link: https://merb.cc/vbulletin/forum.php produces the same error.

That is not a problem with Firefox. You need to clear your browser history
and empty your cache and the link will work.

I have a problem when I fist access merb.cc

I go to the merb.cc home page, then click on Forum which brings up a drop down menu and then I select Forum Home on the drop down.

Instead of taking me to the Forum page this always brings me to a "Activity Stream" page which essentially has nothing on it.

It's only after I'm on the 'Activity Stream' page that clicking on "Forum" will take me to the Forum page.

Used to be that selecting "Forum Home" from the dropdown would bring me to the Forum page directly.

BTW - Speed right now is fine, haven't seen the delays today that I saw a few days ago.

Browser btw is Chrome with a Mac

Me too I have to go thru the ''activity stream'' loop..and for the life of me I could not tell you which browser I use...not my forte, and the first ''Merb & Maritime'' stays open, the forum opens into another and it means I have to close two windows and remember to erase twice my trace when I do not use my Lily laptop to get my Merb fix...

Can no longer access the MERB forum using the Android Forum Runner app, which now displays this message:

Error: The remote server sent an unknown response. This could be a result of the forum software plugin being outdated or having a conflict.

The message occurs on:

Samsung Galaxy S2 running Android 4.1.2
Nexus 7 running Android 4.4.4

I just logged back into merb.
Compared to before, the access speed to merb has increased - the main page comes up pretty much instantly and so do the other pages.
Very noticeable improvement - thanks

BTW since server move... ForumRunner app (Android for me) doesn't work anymore !

Message: Error The remote server send an unknown response. This could be a result of the forum software plugin being outdated or having a conflict.

Please fix this "plugin" issue as ForumRunner is a very nice and discreet way to check MERB !
Thanks ...
