I don't ever recall seeing this place. I know there's the Days Hotel here as well as the Martime Plaza across the street but I can't picture the Maxime.

My mistake. I keep referring to that place as Maxime instead of Maritime. Don't ask me why....LOL

I've made the correction in my post. Thanks.

Review- Hotel Intercontinental

I recently had a lengthy trip to Montreal staying at both the Hotel Intercontinental and the Hyatt. I got the Hotel Intercontinental for $120 as a 4 star on Priceline and the Hyatt for $90 as a 3 star on PL, and frankly I enjoyed my stay at the Hyatt much more considering all factors including amenities, location etc.

Here are the pros and cons of the Hotel Intercontinental:

PROS: Room was nice, if not huge; bed and linens were above average and would get Special K approval; valet parking service was most efficient I have experienced in Montreal, with shortest average car retrieval time; the lobby level bar and lounge is very nice (although the drinks are grossly overpriced).

CONS: Bathroom was on the small side for an alleged Priceline 4 star hotel; the air conditioning was functional but did not cool off the room as quickly as I would have liked, and I struggled to get the room "meat locker cool" as I like for nighttime sleeping; hotel is not well located vis-a-vis the downtown core, but has an okay location for Old Montreal sightseeing; the hotel appeared understaffed with occasional long lines at the front and concierge desks, and the young staff appeared to me to be browbeaten and overwhelmed, although they nicely maintained their composure with guests complaining that their rooms were not ready (it should be noted here that this hotel has a 1:00 p.m. checkout policy which is unrealistic when trying to guarantee 3:00 p.m. check in. Result: lots of free drink coupons were being given out); smallish TV set that is not well located vis-a-vis the bed; amenities (gym, pool) are very average for a hotel of this supposed class.

Review- Hyatt

I recently stayed at the Hyatt during the Jazz Festival for the 4th straight year (although it was my 5th straight Jazz Festival, having stayed at the Delta Centre Ville in 2002).

In reviewing this thread, I see that there have been assorted piecemeal comments about the Hyatt, but no comprehensive review. I find this odd, because it should be obvious by now that the Hyatt is not only the best 3 star hotel in Montreal, but also the best value of any hotel in Montreal if it can be had through the Priceline 3 star bidding process.

PROS: Unbeatable location, especially during Jazz Festival, and the best amenities of any 3 star hotel in Montreal, by far. The Hyatt sits on top of the Complex Desjardins, which gives it an extraordinary advantage over almost all other hotels in Montreal, because the Hyatt's guests are a quick elevator ride away from the CD's food court, shopping mall (which includes a full IGA supermarket, an SAQ liquor store, two ice cream shops, and at least two candy shops, not to mention a dry cleaner if you spill some wine on your jacket or pop a button on your coat) and full service restaurants (including the legendary Baton Rouge). It just doesn't get any more convenient than this. In addition, the Hyatt has superior gym and pool facilities for its class, and an enormous lobby-level lounge suitable for large gatherings, lending itself to recent discussions as a possible location for a Board party event. I have found room service at the Hyatt to be consistently prompt and excellent. Several years ago, the rooms at the Hyatt were renovated with new beds, furniture, lighting fixtures, linens, interior decoration and art, so that the rooms now have a very modern feel to them. Although the rooms are not large or luxurious, they are certainly better than average. In the winter, the location is terrific because the Hyatt is connected via underground tunnel to the Place de Arts Metro Station, enabling easy access to all downtown locations. Although somewhat distant from the bars and restaurants of Crescent Street, the Hyatt is in between that area and Old Montreal, thus giving it a very good "all purpose" location - possibly the best in Montreal, if the proximity to Chinatown is also considered as a strong positive. Finally, is there any better hotel for SP watching in the lobby? Given all of the lounge chairs across from the room elevators, the lobby almost looks like it has been specifically designed with the hobbyist in mind, as there is no better place to watch SPs coming and going from the room elevators.

CONS: The bathrooms are very small, but then again so are the Sheraton's. As noted previously on this Board, SPs (especially newer ones) are confused over access to the rooms and the two elevator system, and 2 SPs I have seen reported getting lost coming to my room. Other than that, I really cannot pinpoint any major negatives with this hotel. I have stayed there many times, and I always pray for my winning PL bid to be the Hyatt.

Robert21,

Wireless Internet and a refrigerator are extras.......extras that not everyone needs. For your information, there is a Battle Net Internet Cafe a short walk away from the Hyatt (on Avenue de Parc) where Internet Access can be had for roughly $3.33 an hour, and less if you buy multiple hours.

Regarding parking, the $25 that you paid must have been for valet service. You also have options of self parking in the garage for $19/day or parking in an outdoor lot on Jeanne Mance for I believe $10 a day. Tell me what downtown hotel has significantly cheaper parking options?

Robert21,

Upgrades are definitely available at certain Priceline hotels, notably the Delta on President Kennedy which is a 3 star. I recently got the basic room at the Delta for $59 and I upgraded to an executive or deluxe room (can't recall which) for $15 more or a total of $74/night. The room I got was good sized with a large bathroom and a balcony. I was very pleased with a room of that quality for only $74 (this was back in April).

I have never inquired about an upgrade at the Hyatt so I don't know, but some friends recommended that I pursue the upgrade at the Delta and it was definitely worth it. The Delta PK also has a $30 upgrade option as I recall, for a room one class above. The Delta has 4 classes of rooms, premiere, executive, deluxe and standard. I can't recall which order they go from best to worst.

Hyatt Going for $70

According to BFT, the Hyatt is going for $70 on Priceline for July 22-25. Best value in Montreal, if you can get it in the bidding process.;)

I know, but in the message boards on Bidding for Travel, they keep talking about using the A-B link as opposed to going through Priceline directly (bidding in both cases).

A-B link = amazing-bargains.com

Supposedly, bidding on Priceline from the A-B link gives you further savings, as opposed to if you had bidded on Priceline by just typing priceline.com.

Is that true? Do you really need to use the A-B link?

I believe that going through BFT links only allows them to know what you got the bid for. Why not just go direct unless you want to post what you got on their site. I may be wrong but I think that is why they want you to use their links.

Hi Dee

I always use BFT as a resource so I know what bids are being accepted but I have never placed a bid on PL through them and I have used PL dozens of times. I have no problem getting on BFT at any time.

James... here is what happened to me....

I don't think you get better bargains... I'm guessing they get a cut of the action somehow... but if you are on B4T and don't use their link they'll ban you...

I intended to use their link one time and just got confused and didn't and B4T woulding let me back on... I used another ISP and name to explain it was an accident and it wouldn't happens again...but they didn't respond... or let me back on....

I have never heard of this happening before for not using their link. I've used amazing-bargains, I've used savingsbarn.com and I've gone directly through PL itself which is really the easiest way to go. The advantage to using AB or Savingsbarn is that they then get some type of cut or kickback from your winning bid using their link to PL. I mix it up between the two of them because BFT and BetterBidding.com are very helpful resources so I do like to give them something if possible.

I've said before and will say again that the main Moderator on BFT named Sheryl is an absolute f'n BIATCH!!, pardon my lingo but she's really just plain nasty!

I agree that that woman is either a total bitch or a psychopath! I've had trouble with her in the past and i stopped posting on her site altogether. This woman either needs to get laid or she's related to Ann Coulter!!
