Review- Hyatt
I recently stayed at the Hyatt during the Jazz Festival for the 4th straight year (although it was my 5th straight Jazz Festival, having stayed at the Delta Centre Ville in 2002).
In reviewing this thread, I see that there have been assorted piecemeal comments about the Hyatt, but no comprehensive review. I find this odd, because it should be obvious by now that the Hyatt is not only the best 3 star hotel in Montreal, but also the best value of any hotel in Montreal if it can be had through the Priceline 3 star bidding process.
PROS: Unbeatable location, especially during Jazz Festival, and the best amenities of any 3 star hotel in Montreal, by far. The Hyatt sits on top of the Complex Desjardins, which gives it an extraordinary advantage over almost all other hotels in Montreal, because the Hyatt's guests are a quick elevator ride away from the CD's food court, shopping mall (which includes a full IGA supermarket, an SAQ liquor store, two ice cream shops, and at least two candy shops, not to mention a dry cleaner if you spill some wine on your jacket or pop a button on your coat) and full service restaurants (including the legendary Baton Rouge). It just doesn't get any more convenient than this. In addition, the Hyatt has superior gym and pool facilities for its class, and an enormous lobby-level lounge suitable for large gatherings, lending itself to recent discussions as a possible location for a Board party event. I have found room service at the Hyatt to be consistently prompt and excellent. Several years ago, the rooms at the Hyatt were renovated with new beds, furniture, lighting fixtures, linens, interior decoration and art, so that the rooms now have a very modern feel to them. Although the rooms are not large or luxurious, they are certainly better than average. In the winter, the location is terrific because the Hyatt is connected via underground tunnel to the Place de Arts Metro Station, enabling easy access to all downtown locations. Although somewhat distant from the bars and restaurants of Crescent Street, the Hyatt is in between that area and Old Montreal, thus giving it a very good "all purpose" location - possibly the best in Montreal, if the proximity to Chinatown is also considered as a strong positive. Finally, is there any better hotel for SP watching in the lobby? Given all of the lounge chairs across from the room elevators, the lobby almost looks like it has been specifically designed with the hobbyist in mind, as there is no better place to watch SPs coming and going from the room elevators.
CONS: The bathrooms are very small, but then again so are the Sheraton's. As noted previously on this Board, SPs (especially newer ones) are confused over access to the rooms and the two elevator system, and 2 SPs I have seen reported getting lost coming to my room. Other than that, I really cannot pinpoint any major negatives with this hotel. I have stayed there many times, and I always pray for my winning PL bid to be the Hyatt.
