Further delays meant it was then scheduled to come out theatrically last week in North America, but about six weeks ago the producers and the studios announced a new date, this November ... which I don't think is even a given at this point. Will they decided to release it digitally instead? I think it's possible, but with a 1/4 billion dollar budget, not including advertising they, and the studios financing them, really need a big theatrical release to make money. Digital revenues alone probably wouldn't even come close to making back the budget. I think the same thing is true of other big releases like Black Widow and Wonder Woman 1984, which are being held back, too ...

Netflix made a sick offer on Crazy Rich Asians - reportedly it fervently sought worldwide rights to the project, offering "artistic freedom, a greenlighted trilogy and huge, seven-figure-minimum paydays for each stakeholder, upfront". The filmmakers chose Warner Brothers not because the money was better, but the chance for a wider theatrical release. Rest assured that Netflix is aware of the current uncertainty surrounding ANY theatrical releases and they will make a similar sick money offer on No Time To Die. It may be a movie built for the theaters, but the investors want a guaranteed return on their investment, and not uncertainty. So Netflix will make at least the offer they made on CRA and is a real contender on the James Bond movie.....

I saw 4 movies on Netflix this week, all superficially being fitted into Netflix's "horror" category, which was not always completely accurate as noted below.

1. It Comes at Night (2017) - this movie, which is more of a science fiction thriller than a true horror film, was the best of the bunch and also the most Covid-19 topical film one can watch. It's about the survivors of a mysterious pandemic, and in particular a family that lives in a remote cabin/house. The survivors do not know if the source of the contagion, presumably a virus, is plant, animal, human, or extraterrestrial, and for that reason they do not leave their house at night. The contagion apparently fatally sickens all its victims, who break out in sores all over their bodies, and vomit and spit up blood. The survivors, wearing masks and gloves, give the sickened victims a gunshot in the head (carefully wrapped in towels to avoid blood splatter) in order to put them out of their misery, douse the bodies with gasoline, and and then burn them to eradicate the contagion. The family, after disposing of poor Grandpa in this fashion after he becomes a victim, encounters another family of survivors asking for help, water and shelter, and offering some food in return. The dramas begin to unfold after the request for shelter is granted. Well done and thought provoking. A-

2. The Endless (2017)- Science fiction/horror about 2 brothers who were members of a "cult" and left it some 10 years earlier. One brother remembers it as a UFO Death Cult, the other recalls it as more of a harmless but fun "commune." They get a video in the mail from the cult/commune and, surprised that the members are not only alive but looking like they have not aged, decide to go back. Weird supernatural stuff then starts happening. Overall well done, would give it a B+

3. The Girl On the Third Floor (2019) - this film is standard horror and stars WWE and mixed martial arts star C.M. Punk, who plays a man who is renovating an old suburban house which he and his pregnant wife have purchased. The house turns out to be haunted, and his renovation efforts result in some horrifying results. The movie does have a little bit of dark humor. Would give it a B-

4. Blackcoat's Daughter- (2015) standard horror starring Kiernan Shipka who played Sally Draper on Mad Men, it's about 2 boarding school girls whose parents do not pick them up at the end of the fall semester, meaning the girls are left alone for holiday break in their dormitory, which is haunted. This movie was very difficult to follow because the story was told in a non-linear fashion that simply wasn't very clear and jumped around in a way that was confusing. The acting is very good, but I found the film disjointed and the ending confusing. C+

2 others I watched yesterday-

Cargo (2018)- this is another pandemic film, Australian made. This one is about a virus that causes zombieism. Symptoms of Zombieism begin 48 hours after infection. The main character in the film is a man bitten by a zombie in the Australian Outback who is struggling desperately to find someone to care for his baby daughter before the symptoms kick in and he becomes a zombie himself. During the 48 hours he must elude aggressive zombies and aggressive survivors who have different agendas, to find a caretaker for his dear little Rosie. It's not as good as It Comes At Night, but is worth watching. Grade: B

The Witch (2015)- Although Rotten Tomatoes has this movie ranked #2 on the list of the top 50 horror movies on Netflix (behind #1 Rosemary's Baby), I thought other horror films in the top 50 are better. That being said, it's a very well done and well acted film about a 1600s Puritan family living in a very remote house in the New England forest, having been banished from their colony due to religious differences with the colony's elders. The family's fortunes rapidly decline through the movie as a hex is (seemingly) put upon them, and all the evidence seems to point towards the teenage daughter, who seems to be present every time some unfortunate event occurs. Grade: B

EB...going to ride your coattails...great recommendations. Will add a few...mostly rewatches for me but nonetheless enjoyable...Legends with Tom Hardy who alongside himself play twin gangsters in east London in the 70/80s; Goodfellas - what more can be said; and Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels with Brad Pitt...a few movies fall into this series by Guy Ritchie...witty and funny.

A couple other reviews:

Last night I saw a 2019 quality low budget horror movie called Sweetheart on Netflix. It's about a young black female who is shipwrecked on an uninhabited island. All her friends seem to have been killed and she is left alone to fend for herself. She learns how to find fish and coconuts to eat and drink, but soon becomes aware of the presence of a creature on the island which only comes out at night. It begins to stalk and terrorize her. She finds clever hiding places, but it eventually finds her. It's a very very very creepy movie. Off the charts creepy. But good. B+

The Highwaymen- 2019- interesting historical drama about the 2 Texas Rangers (played by Kevin Costner and Woody Harrelson) who hunted down and killed Bonnie and Clyde in Louisiana in 1934. The ending of the movie is not in doubt, but it's an entertaining study of what led to the manhunt, why the 2 Texas Rangers were engaged and what they ultimately did to set up Bonnie and Clyde in a fatal ambush. The movie was filmed on location in Louisiana, and the climactic final shootout was filmed on the same stretch of roadway where the real life engagement occurred. Grade: B

Tubi isn’t too bad, kinda like a less premium Netflix.

Quibi is rather promising & good for those w/ short attention spans (first 90 days free)

Think HBO first seasons r free for now.

Wednesday night I watched Blue Ruin (2013), about a homeless, itinerant beach hobo who learns that his parents' killer has been released from prison, and commits himself to avenging their deaths. His attempted vengeance is inept and goes badly awry, creating the drama for most of the movie. Interesting, I would give it a B.

Creep 1 and Creep 2

Today I watched Creep 1 and Creep 2. It's easy to see why these 2 films have quickly become cult horror classics that have revived the "found footage" subgenre of horror film. Filmed with hand held cameras and employing naturalistic styles of acting, both films are carried by Mark Duplass as the "Creep" who lures videographers to his home to film him with a Craig's List ad promising $1000 for a 1 day shoot. He then establishes a weird connection with the videographers while relentlessly tormenting them, leaving them questioning whether this assignment was a bit more than what they signed up for. Both films are worth watching, although I felt Creep 2 was the better of the 2 films because it took the concept established in Creep 1 to another level and was a bit more clever and well written. These movies are more psychological thrillers than true horror films, in my opinion.

Star Mark Duplass, who also co-wrote the first two films, in this video interview, promised that Creep 3 is coming, although he is not satisfied with the early scripts:

Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels with Brad Pitt...a few movies fall into this series by Guy Ritchie...witty and funny.

I saw the latest english gangster movie by Guy Ritchie (The Gentlemen) and thought that was pretty good! If you liked his previous efforts, you might like this one as well.

Btw....Lock Stock didn't have Brad Pitt in it. That was Snatch. Both are pretty good movies though.

I started watching a Canadian TV series which Netflix bought called "Intelligence" which you guys might find very interesting. It's about the intelligence wing of the Vancouver Organized Crime Unit (OCU), their relationship with CSIS (Canadian CIA) and their informants In organized crime. It seems like they are doing investigations that would be FBI jurisdiction in the USA (I thought RCMP investigated organized crime in Canada but according to this show, it is the jurisdiction of OCU, which may or may not be something that is due to Vancouver being such a huge port). Anyway, one of the ideas floated on the show is that the United States Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) is doing covert operations in the Vancouver port regarding drugs being shipped into or out of Canada, which the Canadian LE knows nothing about. The OCU eventually learn that the DEA is doing surveillance on one of their informants and fucking up one of their operations. The DEA guy on the show is undercover, but they figure out what he is up to through informants and arrange a meeting with him. They don't seem to ever question his ability to surreptitiously perform surveillance on a Canadian citizen inside Canada- they just say "knock it off dude, he is our informant and you are fucking up our investigation, so cut the fucking shit." And he is cool with it, and cuts the shit. Later on, the Canadian OCU characters are like, "WTF?????? Are we the 51st State??"

One of my best friends is an FBI Special Agent in New York City and I knew he had some prior interactions with Canadian LE and I mentioned this show to him and what is being portrayed. He told me they always "try" and contact their Canadian counterparts and give a heads up if they have to interview witnesses. Of course, where a covert operation is going on, I do not know what rules actually apply and whether a "heads up" can or should be given. But there is at least an implication that the DEA is operating covertly in Canada without telling anyone of authority in Canada. Whether that is real or not I do not know.

Later on in the series the OCU does involve the DEA guy in their own investigations and attempt to work out a scheme by which one of the subjects of investigation is to be lured into the USA and then arrested.

It is a good show and I can see why Netflix invested some money in this TV series. It has some similarities to the US TV show The Wire and it seems to have been produced in the same time frame. Not as dark as The Wire but many similar attributes.

I'm hard to please, too. I can't watch the same type of programs or movies. I reviewed everything in quarantine. This is why I use VeePN to diversify my content. Try it and you may find something for yourself.

Last night I watched a 2017 French Canadian zombie film called "Ravenous", apparently filmed somewhere in a rural Quebec town and surrounding wooded area (a character is seen walking down Route 113 at one point late in the film). Trout Lake is mentioned, so it's filmed in that area. The movie is a low budget in terms of production values, but the strong point of the film is the cinematography, which is very eerie/creepy. Filmed in French with English subtitles, there is an odd mix of core characters, none of whom are particularly interesting or sympathetic, that unite with the common goal of escaping and surviving swarms of zombies roaming the Quebec countryside. The Quebec breed of zombie screams and growls a lot, especially when attacking, but can be killed with gunshots and knife wounds. The movie at various point is humorous- one of the characters is a "cornball comic" who uses jokes, especially about doctors, to break the palpable tense atmosphere created by the zombies.

The characters at various point in the film make some bad decisions, with predictable results. In this regard the film somewhat follows the standard formula of zombie films. It's not quite as good as Train to Busan (South Korean), Cargo (Australian) or The Girl With The Gifts (British), 3 other zombie horror films on Netflix, the latter 2 of which have much stronger character development. However, the cinematography is really very good and the filmmakers succeed in creating a tremendously creepy ambience that is sustained for the duration of the film.

Here is star Marc-Andre Grondin in a scene from the film:
