Radio-play royalties administered by SOCAN and their extra-national analogs go to support the artists that make the music you are enjoying. What is wrong with musicians getting paid?

By the way - there are plenty of commercial i-radio services that will continue, despite having to pay royalties.

I concur with this, but I think the issue at hand is that the royalties due are being raised to exorbitant heights... it's one thing them getting paid, but it's another making the radio listeners pay extra because of the actions of others (ie downloading music for free).

Personally, I'm not signing because I think 95% of the music on the radio is shit. People tune into the radio and let it play in the background... sonic wall paper. Good riddance. Go see live music, buy the CD at the merch table, it'll cost you less and more money will go in the musician's pockets.

no-one is making radio listeners pay anything. advertising or public funding supports the operating costs of radio play, or which SOCAN royalties are part of the cost.

I agree, but we are talking about internet radio which is far more wide-open stylistically. Anyway, apart from one or two iRadio stations, I tend to go for podcasts more these days.

You're right YouVantOption, I'm conflating commercial radio, talk radio, internet radio, university run radio stations, etc.

It's true that you can tune into the 165bpm UK darkstep D'n'B radio station and if you're not enjoying it you can change to the 166bpm UK darkstep D'n'B station -- all the niches are represented. It would be too bad to lose them, but I trust that they will carry on in some other form - podcasts being one of them.
