ALBANY - Gov. Eliot Spitzer has informed his most senior administration officials that he had been involved in a prostitution ring, an administration official said this morning.

Governor Eliot Spitzer at a news conference in July 2007.

Mr. Spitzer, who was huddled with his top aides inside his Fifth Avenue apartment early this afternoon, had hours earlier abruptly canceled his scheduled public events for the day. He scheduled an announcement for 2:15 after inquiries from the Times.

Mr. Spitzer, a first term Democrat who pledged to bring ethics reform an end the often seamy ways of Albany, is married with three children.

Just last week, federal prosecutors arrested four people in connection with an expensive prostitution operation. Administration officials would not say that this was the ring with which the governor had become involved.

But a person with knowledge of the governor’s role said that the person believes the governor is one of the men identified as clients in court papers.

The governor’s travel records show that he was in Washington in mid-February. One of the clients described in court papers arranged to meet with a prostitute who was part of the ring, the Emperors Club VIP on the night of Feb. 13.

Mr. Spitzer appeared on a CNBC television show at 7 a.m. the next morning. Later in the morning, he testified before a Congressional committee.

An affidavit filed in federal court in Manhattan in connection with that case lists six conversations between the man, identified as Client 9, and a booking agent for the Emperors Club.

He had a difficult first year in office, rocked by a mix of scandal and legislative setbacks. In recent weeks, however, Mr. Spitzer seemed to have rebounded, with his Democratic party poised to perhaps gain control of the state Senate for the first time in four decades.

Mr. Spitzer gained national attention when he served as attorney general with his relentless pursuit of Wall Street wrongdoing. As attorney general, he also had prosecuted at least two prostitution rings as head of the state’s organized crime task force.

In one such case in 2004, Mr. Spitzer spoke with revulsion and anger after announcing the arrest of 16 people for operating a high-end prostitution ring out of Staten Island.

“”This was a sophisticated and lucrative operation with a multitiered management structure,” Mr. Spitzer said at the time. ”It was, however, nothing more than a prostitution ring.”

Albany for months been roiled by bitter fighting and accusations of dirty tricks. The Albany County district attorney is set to issue in the coming days the results of his investigation into Mr. Spitzer’s first scandal, his aides’ involvement in an effort to tarnish Majority Leader Joseph L. Bruno, the state’s top Republican.

It won't be Spitzer himself, because he is probably already registered under another handle.:D

But seriously, folks, this is a perfect example of how America has its head up its ass regarding prostitution.

This is a further example of why I say that anyone who sees SPs in the U.S. is out of his mind. Or her mind, for that matter.

Emperor VIP

By the ways Emperor VIP was an ultra HDH outfit. I checked their website a few times and Mr. Spitzer was likely paying $1500 or more per hour for their ladies. I think the cheapest ladies they had, in a 5 tier price structure, were $1000/hour, and the most were $3000/hour. I hope he was getting some good bang for those bucks.

If you check out the Huffington Post site, they have some screen grabs from the agency's Web site, which has been taken down.

BTW, EB, you are right about the HDH stuff. But then again, who would expect a wealthy governor to go to an incall and ask if they offer 15 minutes? :)

he hasnt resigned yet....maybe he doesnt have any intention.
I heard that Emperor has one escort that commands $5200/hour:eek:

You think he'd be smart enough frequent a much lower profile service, instead of patronizing a place, that if he was still attorney general would be tops on the list to bust!!!

Maxima,

That link is not working, I believe the site has been taken down.

Spitzer is no different than most of the hobbyists on this Board who cheat on their wives. They assume they will never be caught. So did he. So did Pathfinder, who has not been heard from since 2/6/08.

Proof, yet again, that the way to go is: disposable cell phones, fake names, and hotels that don't ask for ID. Relying on the SP or agency to safeguard your privacy is foolish in a world where phone records and conversations can be easily obtained by subpoena.

It seems to me that there is a market for SPs who would provide anonymous service. They could charge higher prices, since that is a rare and valuable service. Their safety could be assured by, for example, having the SP book a room (in her name) in a safe hotel and meeting the client in the lobby.

Quite true. I still don't really know what all the fuss is about concerning Spitzer. It's not like he was behind the prostitution ring....he was simply a john, like all of us. Why should he resign from office because of his indiscretions? It's all b.s. in my opinion. Doesn't America realize that men need sex & the easiest way to obtain it is to pay for it?
No he wasnt behind it, but he made his career as someone who busted people for "immoral behavior", did it ruthlessly and without class....that hypocracy is why its such a big deal.

I dream of the day when, instead of apologizing, the guy would give a press conference while standing next to the hotly dressed SP and say "Yeah, I did it. And I'll do it again. So what? "

That being said, Spitzer was Governor. Prostitution is illegal in the USA. It's reasonable to expect that a politician will either obey the law or campaign to change it.

Yes, Banger, that's the sad part of it all. While he was attorney general he viciously pursued a NYC agency and had it shut down and had a number of people arrested.

This is surreal.

Kepler,

I totally agree with you. I have always supported decriminalization, but realistically it is not going to happen anywhere in northeastern USA any time soon, and this is for sure. I have discussed the legal, cultural, political and social reasons for this in other threads. They are numerous and complex and varied, and frankly you need an in-depth understanding of American history to fully appreciate these complexities and why things are the way they are for us. In a nutshell, it has a lot to do with a legislative and political model that dates back to the 1600s and in which our current statutes and common law, and interpretations thereof, find their roots.
