Gleason is just the latest name (along with Tucker , Domi .. etc ...) to join the long list of Leaf buyouts. Another product of terrible trades and useless free agent signings by this sad-sack, bottom feeding Toronto organization.

"Terrible trades". Why am I suddenly thinking of the name Andrew Raycroft?

"Useless free agent signings". Why am I suddenly thinking of the name DAVID CLARKSON ?

joel, I think the Raycroft trade was a good trade for Boston. Boston got Tuuka Rask. But let's not forget that Raycroft won the Calder Trophy for Rookie of the Year two years before the trade. You do remember that right? It is history that makes this a good trade for Boston, but in 2006 it looked like a solid trade for the Leafs when made.

Agree with the Beave. At the time, it looked like a pretty good trade for the Leafs. Raycroft was a highly regarded young goalie in the league and Rask was an unknown. Every single team makes trades they later regret.

Same thing with David Clarkson, who was one of the most sought-after free agents last season.

Well then - congratulations to the Leafs on obtaining him. Guess it's just unlucky that he turned out to be such a stiff when he put on the Leaf uniform. But hey, at least it only cost about 35 MILLION DOLLARS!

Congratulations also for signing him...AND Phaneuf...AND one-dimensional Phil to long-term team-destroying contracts.

Belated congratulations to the Leafs for obtaining Raycroft and Komi.

Congratulations to the Leafs for signing a talented player like Grabo...before totally WASTING his talent and then giving him a compliance buyout.

Congratulations to the Leafs for their rich history, filled with the names of players such as Brian "Spinner" Spencer, John Kordic, Tie Domi, Dave "Kisser" Williams,.....

And a HUGE congratulations to the Leafs for 1. their remarkable owners such as Harold Ballard and the Ontario Teachers, and 2. their fabulous GMs such as Brian Burke, Dave Nonis and John Ferguson Jr.

It is all these wonderful decisions that have combined to make the Leafs the absolute FUNNIEST "team" in the world...for 47 YEARS and counting!:thumb::thumb::thumb:

Great post (as always) Doc. Clarkson will be much better this season and got off to a bad start last year because he is a great teammate and guy even tho it was a bonehead play to come off the bench to defend a fellow teammate but the guy has a ton of heart and that is one of his intangibles that is needed on any team. They need to get him back on the powerplay as he is great in front of the net and has good hands.

Gonna be an interesting day today.

Maple Leafs’ new plan looks like the old plan

It’s an almost unbelievable number. With the Toronto Maple Leafs buying out defenceman Tim Gleason on Monday afternoon, the franchise has now spent $31.5-million on six buyouts since 2008, the equivalent of about 13 players earning a league-average salary.

On average, the other 29 NHL teams have dedicated $9-million over the last seven summers to pay players to not to play for them. That’s less than one-third of what the Leafs gave Gleason, Mikhail Grabovski, Mike Komisarek, Colby Armstrong, Darcy Tucker and Andrew Raycroft to go away.

The title of the article should be ammended to read : "Maple Leafs’ new plan looks like the old plan = FAILURE!"

It's unbelievable how many habs fans are obsessed with the Leafs. They should worry about their crappy Commie team instead, which will lose their two top & only leaders today.

I'm happy for Danny Briere for finally escaping the Montreal Zoo.

On another note, I'm told by one of my league sources that Josh Gorges will indeed be traded to the Leafs by tomorrow. I've also learned that Brian Gionta will not be back since the cheap bastards only want to give him a 1-year contract, while other teams have offered at least two.

Still hearing those voices in your head hey Doc!!!

Just heard the Leafs are closing in on Stephane Robidas.

On another note, the habs just signed diminutive veteran Mike Weaver.

Who's next? PK Subban to a $10 million a year?

Robidas would be a good signing for a young Leafs team especailly to help mentor Rielly and Gardner.

I would just love Philly or anyone for that matter to come in and offer sheet subban for 13 or 14mil. The canadians would have to match because they already traded their second best dman in Georges, away.

The funniest signing of the day so far is Benoit Pouilot getting CRAZY $ by Edmonton. Sol Tee Nutz is not gonna be happy. The funniest non signing was Erhoff snubbing detroit.
