had to go to Point Claire today and on the way back the Champlain bridge access was blocked, got lost in the detour and ended up going through the Kahnawake reserve. Noticed all the tobacco for sale signs and decided to pop into one of them ( I never knew I was in a reserve ), asked if they had menthol's ( for ma ), cute girl says yes, ask for the price, she says $25 a carton... buy 3 get one for free, got 4 cartons for ma for $75 as no tax, one carton in Alberta is $120 plus no menthol is available. If I smoked and lived anywhere near there and I mean within 1 hour I would stock up, get gas also, far cheaper, win, win.

I do not smoke cigarettes so this reserve thing is new to me, the smokes I bought were Du Mont menthol light king size for my mom as Menthols are banned here and in Alberta.

I wonder what smokeless tobacco goes for? I was crossing into the US and once the CBP officer saw that I was from TN the questions about dip prices started coming. Guy said he pays $15usd a can. I don't use tobacco but I think it's like $5 a can here.

I know a person that use to go to the reserve to get smokes twice a month. This person was stopped by the revenuers ( Quebec ) There were illegal smokes in the car. The goods and car was seized and a hefty fine was levied. The smokes cost over $5k. in the end.

If Police check and find cigarettes, then there is a problem.

Getting stopped by the police does not worry me, have not been stopped in decades probably due to my age. I will continue to get smokes for ma as I found an excellent English pub in Pointe Claire ( Kelly's ) that I plan to return to. If not for the fact that they are menthol I probably would not return but at 92 my mom deserves some sort of a treat.

This thread is not complete if we don't discuss where to get some expensive smokes so one can then be more appreciative of the cheaper ones.

There is a cigar shop near the corner of St. Catherine and Crescent Street. I do not recall the name. A few years ago I walked in there with an American buddy who told me he wanted to buy a good Cuban cigar because he couldn't get one in the US. So we went into that shop and he paid $38 for one Cuban cigar. Must have been a good one. I guess there was a heavy tobacco tax so where he doesnt get beat up by the American embargo, he gets beat up by Canadian taxes. So anyway I asked him for permission to take a puff of that Cigar, because I figured for $38 it must be pretty good. Anyway it was okay, I guess my puff was probably worth a $1.00 or so if there were 38 puffs in that Cigar.

So when are Menthols totally banned from sale?

In Alberta about 2 years ago and Quebec just last year, they claim the menthol flavor may lure kids to smoke. But the same thinking does not apply to flavored alcohol, why I do not know, figured the tobacco lawyers would have been all over that ruling.
With the legal issue, there are quite a few shops on the road side with many customers inside the only natives I seen were the ones working there, the cops could easily stop many people who drove off the reserve with native smokes, if they wanted to.

if you buy a few cartons for personal use i doubt very much revenue or any other police will waste your time for this unless you buy and intent to sell for profit

The law is the law, the guy enforcing the law has a quota. There is a lot of politics in this situation. The Gov. needs to grab a few to make a deterrent to people to buy illegal smokes, but they can not stop every car because the Indians will scream discrimination and they will say they are being starved out.

So, is possession illegal or just the sale? I have a friend that occasionally smokes and she wants me to bring her some Menthols. I'd hate to go to secondary for a carton of Salems.

From what I understand possession if you are not a native is illegal, the sale to a non-native is also illegal but the police will not bother the natives who do sell to non-natives. Since my purchase I have asked around and some people go once a month or two and grab a few cartons with no one has been pulled over. I am guessing that they may be watched and if you go once a week and grab twenty cartons they could pull you over. When my mom runs out I will return for four more cartons, not really worried about the police.

Pocession is illegal. And I think its about 2$ a cig ticket if you get caught.
Few years ago I knew a guy who got a 400$ ticket because he had a bag (200 cigs).

But like anything.... its not a crime if you dont get caught.

The shop you are talking about is Vasco, been there many times as I am a cigar smoker. However, I've only bought a cigar from Vasco only once or twice in my life as canadian taxes on tobacco are crazy. Only buy cigars when I go to Cuba. There are also a few good vendors online, but customs might catch your shipment...

By the way, some cubans go for much more than 38$ as Cohiba Behike 56 and others are more than 100$ EACH in Canada. But smoking a 38$ cigar that takes you more than an hour to smoke is cheaper than the drinks you order with it...
