Trump knows exactly the consequences of his actions because his entire political career has been built on chaos, division & hatred. The messier it gets, the better for him. Recall that Trump’s political star first rose on the back of his racist attempt to question whether Obama was even born in the US.
The US has long been a divided nation & Trump just happens to be one of the best at exploiting these divisions for political power. Now there are opportunists like Pompeo, Loeffler Hawley, Cruz, Gohmert all trying to be the next champion to the Trumpers because that’s their fastpass to more political power.
Read what the hardcore Trumpers r writing - it’s usually laced with deep distrust of the government or hatred, resentment of minority groups/immigrants. Easier to blame someone else for their problems than to do some self-reflection & actually finding a solution.
