WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump told journalist Bob Woodward that he knew the coronavirus was more deadly and contagious than the flu while he continued to downplay its dangers to the public, according to Woodward's new book "Rage."

"I wanted to always play it down. I still like playing it down, because I don’t want to create a panic," Trump told Woodward on March 19 in excerpts of audio interviews obtained by CNN.

In interviews with Woodward between December 2019 and July 2020, Trump discussed the threat of the coronavirus with a level of detail that he had not yet acknowledged to the public, noting Feb. 7 that it was "deadly stuff," and "more deadly than your — even your strenuous flus."

He's not even a smart president for telling Woodward that.

I do think it's important for a President to refrain from making statements that will send the public into a panic. I think that's what Trump was trying to communicate to Woodward. He may have taken it to an extreme but there wasn't much of a precedent for this, perhaps excepting Woodrow Wilson's statements during the 1918 flu pandemic. I haven't looked into those statements but my guess is that maybe it was the same playing down of the public health threat.

This isn't a simple issue because Trump would have been roundly criticized if he issued statements that created panicked behavior.

Wilson's course was to completely ignore the pandemic. He never made ANY statement about it, so Trump actually did more to even acknowledge Covid:

"For an activist president, President Wilson’s passive response to the influenza pandemic is baffling. Singularly focused on winning the war and achieving a just peace, Wilson failed to publicly acknowledge the pandemic, much less address it. His indifference had disastrous consequences."

It's just a coincidence? that where the death toll is the most on the planet, either in the US and in Brazil, where the presidents have said it doesn't matter.

Just a summary

Pretend President: Trump Downplayed the Pandemic.

^^^^ I think this has the potential to hurt Trump if Biden gets out there to the swing states and capitalizes on it. This is gift wrapped for Biden, he just needs to get out of the basement and let the people see him. But he‘ll probably just sit back and let Kamala try to capitalize on it, which she won’t.

This just seems like another “grab em by the pussy” thing, that in the end won’t even stop the suburban chics from coming out and droves and still vote for him, lol.

President Donald Trump knew Covid-19 was deadlier than the flu before hitting the United States, but wanted to minimize the crisis, according to a new book.

Bob Woodward, the reporter who first broke the Watergate scandal, interviewed Mr. Trump 18 times from December through July.

Mr Trump told him the virus was "a deadly thing" before the first American death was confirmed, later adding that he wanted to "minimize" it to avoid causing panic.

The president called the book “fake”.

To date more than 190,000 dead and just yesterday almost 1,000,000 in the world

He said he wanted to minimize the danger of this virus to avoid causing panic.

The real reason is that he was afraid of losing votes if he said this virus was dangerous.

Instead of playing golf he would have to go to hospitals, he would really see human pain.

For me this is unacceptable.
This proves that instead of thinking of citizens, he only thinks of himself.

A good president must do everything to improve the lives of his citizens.
And that's not what he does.

^ I agree, this doesn't look good at all. Leaving hours' worth of recordings in the hands a hostile reporter, that is. Let's hope that he learns his lesson and acts more prudently in his second term.

I can't believe that someone with one ounce of judgment can defend what Trump did or didn't do.
Except if they are members of Trump's sect.

What makes you think that Woodward is a hostile reporter. Where is your proof?
Donald wanted the interview. He asked for it. Woodward just reported facts as he heard them.
Maybe Donald is hostile to Donald. New book title s/b see Donald and Hyde.

Well, maybe not hostile. A neutral or even friendly reporter who just enjoys detailing his wet dreams as to how his friend Donald should be removed from office. 25th Amendment and so on. Have you by any chance read "Fear"? This is what friends usually do, as a hobby.

Apparently Trump thought that he might win Woodward over by the sheer force of his (Trump's) personality. Did not exactly work out, what a surprise.

I just saw the Trump press conference.

He is still smart enough to realize that he made several big blunders while talking with Woodward.
He was skating, and he was struggling like a devil in the holy water.

He misled all the American people.

What do I get is that he said a few times, "I didn't lie", "I'm not a liar"

And when is the next Biden press conference scheduled? Or should we direct this question to his nurses?

What's the relationship between a few nurses, and 320,000,000 Americans?
