OUCH!

Just Announced around 2:20, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has banned Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling for life from participating in any team decision making of any kind, going to any games, or participating in any NBA activities or functions due to recorded racist comments which an investigation confirmed was the undoctored voice of Donald Sterling.

Of course, besides the moral outrage a lot of this is about profit and the sustainability of the franchise. Still, I'm shocked that this Sterling is being totally banned after nothing was done for so many years, and that it's being done because of a private conversation that was recorded secretly. I'm not saying I don't approve the move. Adam Silver is showing a lot of balls, and I find the comments by Sterling intolerable. But why did it take this long to reign this guy in with any effectiveness?

Personally, I'm shocked the punishment went this far considering the kind of sentiments held by Donald Sterling, along with other highly questionable practices, were certainly known well enough a very long time ago.

Silver is calling for a vote to kick Sterling out as owner of the team. According to Silver a 3/4 vote is required.

***The word is that a group headed by Magic Johnson and other groups are already positioning themselves for an expected bid to own the team that reports say will go for around $$$1 Billion. That knowledge will likely help direct the vote to get rid of Sterling...IF....there was any indecision by the other owners.

http://www.foxnews.com/sports/2014/...ed-for-life-from-nba-fined-25-million-by-nba/

The NBA threw the book at LA Clippers owner Donald Sterling, banning him for life, fining him $2.5 million and raising the possibility of a forced sale of the team over racist remarks he made to an ex-girlfriend that surfaced on a tape recording.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver made the announcement at a New York press conference moments after Sterling told Fox News that he was not interested in selling the team. When reached after the press conference by Fox News' Jim Gray, Sterling declined to comment.

Silver, who succeeded David Stern as NBA commissioner in February, said the league interviewed Sterling during its investigation. He said NBA investigators determined that the voice heard on the audio tape obtained by TMZ was Sterling's and called the comments "deeply offensive" and "harmful."

"Former and current NBA players are very happy and satisfied with Commissioner Silver's ruling"
- Earvin "Magic" Johnson tweeted

"Sentiments of this kind are contrary to the principles of inclusion and respect that form the foundation of our diverse, multi-cultural and multi-ethnic league," Silver said.

On Sunday, TMZ posted audio of a man purported to be Sterling telling his girlfriend that he didn't want her bringing black people to "my games."

Silver told the room full of reporters that he is banning Sterling for life from any association with the team or the NBA. The ban, he said, includes attending games and team practices. He said the $2.5 million fine was the harshest under NBA rules. Silver said he will urge the Board of Governors to force the sale of the team and "do everything in my power to ensure that that happens."

Silver said Sterling's representatives found out about the ruling just before the press conference. He called the lifetime ban independent of selling the team.

"Former and current NBA players are very happy and satisfied with Commissioner Silver's ruling," Earvin "Magic" Johnson tweeted.

Mark Cuban, the owner of the Dallas Mavericks, tweeted, "I agree 100% with Commissioner Silvers findings and the actions taken against Donald Sterling."

Silver's press conference was held hours before the Clippers were to take the court for Game 5 of their Western Conference quarterfinal series against the Golden State Warriors. The best-of-7 series is tied at two games apiece.

The Portland Trail Blazers and San Antonio Spurs have worn black socks in their games as a show of support, while the Miami Heat mimicked the Clippers warm-up statement in their playoff game against Charlotte on Monday night.

"Like I've said before, there's no room in this game for an owner like that," Heat star LeBron James said. "For us, as basketball players, we're all brothers. We're competing against each other and all of us want to win, but in the end, we all have to stick together."

Kobe Bryant and TNT analyst Kenny Smith are among the many to join James in calling for Sterling's ouster and Jordan took a rare public stance on a high-profile issue when he said he was "disgusted that a fellow team owner could hold such sickening and offensive views."

"We're more than basketball players," Wizards guard Garrett Temple said. "We're human beings, first and foremost, and when you hear something like that, it's very unfortunate that whoever that is talking feels that way, and I don't think there's any place in this game or in the world, for that matter, for thoughts like that."

I don't understand how you could take such sanctions against what someone said in private during a domestic quarel. Everybody has the right to think whatever he wants, even if it's stupid if he just keeps it in a private circle..

We are all against Racism of course, but fight against racism sometimes reminds me the Tribunal of the Holy Inquisition.

It doesn't matter whether he said it in private. As an NBA owner, he is in a position of power with the right to control who his NBA team hires and fires. Being an NBA owner is a privilege, not a right. The NBA does not want to associate with such individuals. Major League Baseball suspended Marge Schott back in the 1990s for making similar comments and she eventually sold her interest in the team, also due to health problems she was having.

Sterling is basically being forced to sell the team, much like what MLB did with Schott.

We are not talking about the same thing EB. Of course, NBA didn't have any others choices after the media tragedy.

The question is : does a very old man (I mean 81yo !), born in an other time (I mean 1933 !) after some stupid words (from an other time), stolen during a PRIVATE discussion, a domestic quarel of jaleousy (who never said words that exceeds his thought in these case) with his half-blood wife (does a racist guy would be with a half-blood girl ?)... Deserve to become the Ennemy Number One of the medias ?? Damn, do you know how many people kill or rape everyday in the world ?

The lady is not his wife, it's his mistress. He is estranged from his wife who is close to 80.

Regarding the question of whether he deserved what he got- if you ask me he was pretty stupid to make statements whether public or private insulting the race of virtually all of his players.

Hmmmm,

I don't like this excuse, and I don't think it's relevant at all. If he's too old to be accountable for his words he's too old to own a team. Being born in another time is a misdirection. There were plenty of people who were not racist in 1933. I have living family members born in the deep U.S. South around that time and most are not racist. Racism is still a choice despite upbringing or close social influences. As for the private discussion, the contrast between his private thoughts and what he barely managed to cover from the public show a person hiding his true self for money. The recording shows who he truly is and what he can be held responsible for. With players disgusted about who they play for, coaches like Doc Rovers saying they are gone if he stays, and sponsors beginning to pull out, private or not great irreparable damage has been inflicted. The NBA is a business that has the right to protect it's interests, and no one should expect a sports team to excuse a racist just because he wasn't caught "fairly" as some might say.

Sterling chose to be who he is and if most the world is repulsed by him, and he is dragged through the mud because of it, his racism is his own fault and so are the consequences.

I believe Sterling is also Jewish. It's a disgrace that Sterling could be a racist considering all that people of his heritage have been through due to racism and other maliciously ignorant perceptions.

Racism is just a stupid opinion. You deserve to be dragged trhought the mud if you rape or kill, not for a stupid opinion.

???

You're going to have to square that with the 30-40 million Africans who suffered and died in slavery in the Americas and the Muslim world, not to mention millions of Jews, Poles, Gypsies, Slavs, Armenians, Christians, American Indians and hundreds of other culturally and racially distinct people whose lives were tortured or destroyed by RACISTS.

I like what you wrote, cause it shows the misunderstood. A 81yo man who said some racist words during a domestic quarel of jaleousy is not responsible of what have been made by the others racists who killed and tortured in the last 3000years lol. He has to be judged based on what he has done. A legal specialist would explain it better than I do...

You said "racism is just a stupid opinion", racism as a whole concept, thus taking the issue well beyond the old man. Read and understand what you wrote. You opened the box and now you're hedging for cover after the fact. You should have kept the issue to a stupid old man, even then it doesn't matter. He's a racist owner of a multiracial team in a multiracial world. He deserves what he is getting.

Case closed,

Btw, we could say that racism killed millions people, religions killed millions people, communism killed millions people... But in reality it's just human acts who killed. Racism, religion and communism are just excuses that humans take to feed their killing addictions..

By the way, Sterling told the NBA in its investigation that he knew he was being recorded, so the conversation was not "private." It was public because if you know you are being recorded and you are a public figure, you must assume that the tape will be made public.

On stupidity alone, he deserves the ban and the ridicule. He also let himself get played by a wannabe gold digger.

Once again, as there is thousands of people who rape and kill everyday, some words shouldn't be enought to point you out as the Ennemy Number One of the world... It's important to hierarchize the seriousness of the actions in a society.

From Sterling's wiki bio:

"Sporting News described Sterling as "one of the worst owners in basketball for decades", while The New York Times and Forbes have called him the "worst owner" in sports. ESPN The Magazine in 2009 named the Clippers the worst franchise in professional sports. Since purchasing the Clippers in 1981, Sterling's ownership oversaw the worst winning percentage through 2013–14 of the four major American sports leagues. In 1981, he refused to pay the $1,000 prize to a local lawyer who won a free throw contest until the contestant filed a lawsuit. The Clippers in 2004 declined to pay for assistant coach Kim Hughes' surgery for prostate cancer; instead four Clippers players contributed to cover the $70,000 cost. Uncharacteristic for an owner, Sterling in 2010 heckled players on his own team—with Baron Davis receiving the harshest treatment—while the owner sat courtside during home games."

The thought police tell you what you can think and now what you can say. If you don't agree they can take your property. Somehow I just don't think that is freedom.

Well, his GF was black so that suggests something....once a guy dates...and then becomes a significant other to someone from another race....the scope for racism, while it exists, diminishes significantly....

He also said he didn't mind if she took on the black cock.

He might be a racist but he isn't very good at it.

The fact you don't have the right to think or say what you want even in a private circle reminds me of "1984" (George Orwell).

What you people don't understand is once you own a nba franchise only 1 of 30. You agree abide by the rule of "NBA, God then country".

What and who you are affect each others income and well being. NBA is growing in China, Europe and god knows where else.

Your not fucking w black people your fucking with entire industry like steel, gold, oil.

This is like owning a McDonalds and painting M green.
Owning a Tim Hortons and not serving coffee.
Starbucks serving watery coffee.
Coke bottles in Maine is white like sprite ..

Urban leagend is that 2 Canadian teams were created knowing they were gonna fail so that rich white people in USA can buy em back once they failed. 2 Canadian teams was nothing but a ploy

Go Vancouver grizzlies!!!
