Out of all the restaurants that i have been to this whole summer (i eat out twice a week religiously in all calibers of restaurants from fine cuisine, to legendary fast food joints, to gimmicky food trucks)...
The single meal that sticks in my mind as the most mind-blowing, simple yet delicious thing i've tasted is the corn cob salad at the suwu bar on st-laurent street.
To think this delicious culinary invention is a 4$ entree just tickles me pink lol.

P.s, dont forget to stand the cob upright and to cut off the corn kernels vertically, mix them in with the other garnishings on the plate and prepare to have a fuckin mindgasm!
(nobody there will tell you how to eat this and once the plate arrives you will definitely be scratching your head lol)

If you want to see the waitress with the glasses smile, tell her the guy that harassed the cook for weeks for the recipe sent you ;)

Mr. Steer on Ste-Cath, near Drummond... Nothing fancy. Just plain GREAT burgers and fries.

If you like souvlakis, Delithèque on Rosemont boul. corner of Iberville is the place to go. The tzatziki is thick and tasty. They also serve very good italian dishes.

Hi folks!

Currently in Montréal for a couple of days (Action de Grâce and my parents are celebrating their 65th wedding anniversary)

There was a lot of posts recently on Portuguese restaurants in Montréal. My favorite one - from at least 1982 - is Janos on 3883 St. Lawrence. Not too expensive and there is a reasonable choice of items on the menu. My favorite one is still the frango assado (roast chicken). (Yes for those who are speaking Portuguese there is a pun intended here!!!!! Frango assado is also a sexual position).

I went to a restaurant Friday night and it was simply exquisite! It is located on Van Horne

http://www.restaurantchristophe.com/

It is a BYOW and the prices are very affordable. The Maître d'Hôtel (Pierre) was perfect: very helpful, funny (not too much) and respectful.

One more post to close out...

Shinji for sushi, not too shabby. Montreal is starting to up its sushi quality. Oh, and it's located right next to a shitty, but popular, restaurant in vogue right now in MTL... Eat at Shinji, party next door.

Lavanderia for their parillada completa. Better Peruvian in MIA, but the food was good. Along with sister resto Park, finally some decent options/reasons for staying in Westmount for lunch/dinner.

Manitoba for their game. Mr. M, I owe you a dinner, and we're coming here next time I'm in town for their venison filet. You will like.

Bouillon Bilk, still some of the most innovative food this city has to offer. Which is saying a lot. And a walkable option for those staying downtown.

Oh, and a bonus, Baton Rouge for their lobster poutine. Only $10 and it was generously topped with hunks of fresh lobster. I was skeptical before. Much better alternative than McDonald's or A&W for a late night snack.

-----------------------------

OK, now, that's it for this trip. Coffee finally wearing off.

A friend had just returned from a trip to PEI and was on a seafood kick, I'm always up for some seafood so she suggested we go to Notkins on Bleury.

They specialize in Oysters and fresh seafood, but they also have other choices on the menu for non-seafood lovers like Pork Chops, burgers, etc… It was a really nice and cozy place, Not really a quiet fine dining experience but more casual and relaxed.

We sat at the oyster bar and after a couple of Notkins Caesar's (with pickled Herring) we decided to go with the Captain's platter, which was basically Raw Oysters (from 3 different regions) Raw clams, sea urchin, shrimp, Lobster and Crab served on ice in a metal tub/bucket.

All the seafood tasted very fresh. I popped my Oyster cherry that night, I enjoyed it more then I thought I would. Staff was real friendly and very attentive.

Great Atmosphere & great Food coupled along with Great Conversation & Company. Can't get any better than that

From what I remember I believe he said they were from PEI, New Brunswick and Massachusetts (our favourite out of the 3).
They had oysters from other areas as well, just don't remember from where.

Vegan:

Other than the famous Crudessence and Aux Vivres.

Arepera
Panthere Verte
L’Gros Luxe
Lola Rosa
Cafe Santropol

Non Vegan:

The burger joint behind Queue de Cheval: QDC Burger.

Ma Poule Mouillée. Some say better than Romados. I say they are at the same level but MPM has the better sauce.

I will politely have to disagree on these two.

Romados is still the best Portuguese chicken in town. Over-priced? Yes, a little. But they really get the flavor in there. I've tried all the other places, and the "aggressiveness" with which Romados flavors their chicken / marinade is still my favorite, for my palate. Ma Poule Mouillée does a fantastic poutine rendition with the chicken, but the classic chicken-fries-salad combo is just not as flavorful as Romados'. I concede Romados' fries aren't the best. But they're not soggy. And they too are flavorful, especially after you re-heat them the next day (I can't finish the whole thing in one sitting anymore).

Toqué is a Montreal fine dining institution. The don. The fine dining equivalent to a Queue de Cheval or Moishes for steak in this city. The predecessor to Pied du Cochon, Joe Beef's and all these other cooler hipster spots that has cheapened the special-occasion feel of white-glove fine-dining service. (That said, Toqué has also surrendered to the casual trend a little, with their waiters annoyingly walking around with sloppy loosened ties. If you're wearing a tie at work, fucking tighten it up, slacker!! :nono:) Do you eat at Toqué every week? No. But I take a degustation spin there at least once every year. Just took my friends there on the last trip. For the amount of food you get, it's not a bad deal. 4 grown men, albeit middle-aged office dilettantes, were sufficiently filled. And yes, there are some over-the-top flourishes, but even the way-way-out-of-style foam was used to delicious effect. The signature princess scallop dish is still to die for - perfection in a slurp - a true signature dish. And to foodie friends, who are looking for a Perse, Bouley, Le Bernardin "NYC" type experience in Montreal, I comfortably recommend Toqué.

Never have I said the food at the spots I mentioned as overrated are bad. There is a distinction. I find the food there to be quite above par to exceptional. I say they are overrated like you would have to go out of your way to go to these places. Romados is friendly and efficient and as a non-French speaker they treat you the same. Toque offers an amazing dining experience but they just go too out of the way at times to the point of silliness. Like at the end of your meal they bring in this huge plate with two gummy candies the size of a nickel. Really???? LOL. Well I used to visit that restaurant frequently (once every month or two) with colleagues after a great day at the Markets.

My Pho at Pho Saigon Vietnam, 1053 St. Laurent, is pictured here: http://s19.postimg.org/ganzt6geb/image.jpg

That's the small bowl which is $6.50. Medium is $7.50 and large is $8.50. Across the street at Pho Back 97 they are serving the exact same soup in the exact same sized bowls for $8.50 for small, $9.50 for medium and $10.50 for large. The only difference is Pho Bac 97 throws a few fresh slices of leek into the soup. Whether that is worth an extra $2 is up to you.

Anyone know how to post pics directly rather than links to postimages.com?

Here is the house special at Grillados on 2079 rue St. Catherine Oest- a dangling spit skewered with chicken slathered in spicy piri piri sauce, peppers and onions, and two sides: grilled veggies and spicy rice - my meal is pictured here:

The whole cut up chicken that Chercherfemmes and I had this past summer was actually better. It was also basted with spicy piri piri sauce.

Kazu. WOW! Always passed by this place and finally stepped in and gave it a shot. Shrimp burgers and the salmon tartar. Totally recommend.
Miso. The fried ice cream is to die for!!!!! And the beef teriyaki as well if you don't want any sushi.
Nostos Grill. Best Gyro by far! Puts the ones in NYC to shame. That chicken and white sauce are absolute perfection!!!!!

The atmosphere for Nostos Grill and Kazu are like the ugly pretty girl. You might not like the atmosphere at first glance but give it time it will surely grow on you. Miso highly recommend a visit during the warmer days where you can dine outside.

Lavanderia is not Peruvian, but Argentinian/Japanese. We do much better food than just meat and chimichurri. But it's a good place, yes. Unfortunately there is no outstanding Peruvian food. But Mezcla in the Gay village is a nice place to go. My family delivers some fresh Peruvian black mint for some of their meals.

Ha! You are absolutely right. Goes to show it's not a good idea to post at 3am in the morning...

I actually conflated two restaurants. I know exactly how I messed that one up in a sleepy state too... Braseria El Tumbao is the Peruvian spot in the Plateau I meant. And Lavanderia is actually Argentine / Korean. Antonio Park is of Korean heritage, not Japanese. Poor form to confuse a Korean for a Jap... Buenos Aires actually has the third largest Korean community in the world - behind Seoul and LA, so there are a lot of Koreans from there. Incredibly surprising and sad BA lacks good Korean BBQ, though. Park is Japanese trained, though, so he blends elements of all his cultures into his cooking - hence 'washing machine' is a very suitable name for one of his resto's...

Mezcla opened with so much acclaim... Their dishes were just way over the top. In trying to be innovative, I think the chef over-Quebec'd his cooking. Too much. But maybe it's worth another visit, as it's been a while. I went the 3rd or 4th month they were open.

A shame you work for the wrong agency. Would've loved to have met you and pick that pretty spinner head of yours for delicious restaurant ideas. :p

Ahahahahaha... What??? You don't like the grandiose closing show of petit fours?? Of course, it needs to be on a giant plate!!! Clearly, you're not French! ;) :p :D

The filet mignon salad at Mandy's Salad Bar on Crescent. They have two other locations I believe. The Asian Sesame and Cilantro-Cumin are my favorite dressings.

Look behind you.
Tried this week Red Tiger Pub, Vietnamese street food style restaurant.

Amazing, I am planning to return home for Christmas and planned a day or 2 in Montreal, thought a nice Vietnamese restaurant would be great so did a search, thought it would be a long process... Nice. Thanks

Most place that serve the best Pho in my opinion are not in Dowtown area, but more Cote des neiges or Rosemont, so for people visitiing you will need a car.

Tried this week Red Tiger Pub, Vietnamese street food style restaurant. If any of you have been to, Satay Brothers (Singapur food) or Junior (Filipino) they have a similar vibe, difference is that Red Tiger actually take reservations, that the other two are walk in place. Its located in the Village also, so not too far from main attractions. Won't go too much in details, but it was a nice experience, we stayed past closing time, and we ate almost the entire menu, that as about 20 dishes that are all recommended to share. They also make some interesting cocktails.

vietnamese reporting in:

speaking of pho, yes, it is true the best pho is not located downtown or chinatown but it doesn't mean there's no good ones in chinatown. for example, both pho bac and pho bang new york are very good choices.

the best are pho lien and pho maisonneuve.

if you're looking at chicken pho (pho ga), tay ho on st-denis is the only one to go to
