If any of you have been to, Satay Brothers (Singapur food)

I went looking for it in Atwater Market last month

I guess that location closes when winter comes ?

vietnamese reporting in:

speaking of pho, yes, it is true the best pho is not located downtown or chinatown but it doesn't mean there's no good ones in chinatown. for example, both pho bac and pho bang new york are very good choices.

the best are pho lien and pho maisonneuve.

if you're looking at chicken pho (pho ga), tay ho on st-denis is the only one to go to

Honestly I have eaten Pho at the places you mentioned, the highly rated place near Beaubien Metro station (Pho Lien), the top places in New York City, the top places in Connecticut, and all of it is good in my opinion and to a large extent fungible. There are variations on tastes and textures and fat content and some broths have a more noticeable saffron content (Pho Bang) and some are more over reduced than others. But in my experience the differences are subtle and a matter of taste. Pho lien was good but it wasn't that much better than the two Chinatown places that it warrants me taking a Metro Ride to Beaubien Station and then walking a few blocks and waiting outside in subzero temperatures while icicles form on the underside of my scotum. I will take the easier trip to Chinatown and the warmth of Pho Saigon Vietnam any day. In my opinion it's just not that big a difference. The broths are mostly fungible with minor variations in taste and spicing and texture/fat content.

During the winter, which is soup season, I have two firm rules. One is never walk so far to a Pho restaurant that you freeze your balls off when there is a place closer to your hotel. Two is that the closer the hotel is to the restaurant, the warmer you stay, and the quicker you get back to your hotel so that your balls can be warmed up in someone's mouth rather than frozen in the Montreal cold. These are my only two rules.

Since we are talking Asian cuisine, Aunt Dai restaurant on Cote des neiges is an excellent spot. I went there to eat there with a Chinese coworker. A cozy place, and the food was spicy (I am into spicy food). Per my coworker, the food served is typically Chinese http://auntdai.com/

I am too lazy, I did not take to verify if it was already mention.

Last night, I went to Pastaga (St-Laurent and Beaubien). Exceptionnal. Their "pintades plate with gnocchis you", simply drove me crazy.

Here are reviews from my recent trip:

Pho Bang New York, 1001 St. Laurent, Chinatown- I have tried 4 different Pho shops in Chinatown and to me, they are all fungible- some use more saffron, some use more fresh leeks in the soup, but the quality is basically the same. Pho Bang New York is probably using more cloves and fresh leek than some of the other places. However I did not like their Gui Con (fresh spring roll) as much. I liked Pho Saigon Vietnam and Pho Bac 97 fresh spring rolls more.

Chez Chili, 1050B Clark (corner de la Gauchietere, Chinatown) - this is a Szechaun/Hunan specialty restaurant. Interestingly, there are no appetizers on the menu, although they offer won ton soup and a vegetarian hot and sour soup. I ordered several dishes here, the best of which was the twice cooked pork, although I have had this dish elsewhere and Chez Chili's wasn't the best version I have tasted.

L'Avenue- This was a breakfast stop one day. I ordered the Montreal bagel with cream cheese and lox, the first time I ever had it here. It was pretty good, which I wasn't expecting. I am very fussy when it comes to lox and I have been known to throw it out if it is not up to snuff, but this was pretty good. It was served with a tomato and caper salad on the side.

Tim Horton's in the Esso Station on Sherbrooke across the street from Hotel 10- I gotta say Tim Horton's kicks ass on Dunkin Donuts - better coffee, better muffins, and better donuts. I had to hit the road and needed something fast and TH came through for me with great muffins, great coffee and a really good Boston Kreme donut. Although I should add that their Egg McMuffin, which I had last trip, although bigger than McDonald's version, isn't nearly as good, because Timmy is using inferior English Muffins to what McD's is using.

Look behind you.
A little far away but Anzac ( small pub about half hour away from Ft.McMurray on a reserve ). Perhaps the best burger ( Elk ) you have had in a long time, quaff it down with a pint or two of budweiser and you will be full. Nothing fancy just good stick to your ribs food. Waitress is cute and friendly also.

Once in a while I like to go to Elio on Bellechasse. Nothing fancy, but everything is good from pasta to Osso Buco, including pizza.

Look behind you.
There was a great article in the Montreal gazette a few days ago about Montreals best dining places, many that have not been mentioned here.

Went here with some friends over the holidays. Very easy to find parking on the street. A small place popular by their many selections of Oysters which i do not like Oysters but had a wonderful meal anyways.

Started with a wonderful salad of mixed greens with the honey and lemon vinaigrette and some equally wonderful Bruschetta.

For the main course i had the Scallops sautéed in a Madagascar green peppercorn sauce flambéed with brandy with sides of rice pilaf and sauteed veggies, was very good but for $40 for the entree you would think you would get more than 7 medium sized scallops. With the appetizers i was content but without appetizers i would have still been hungry.

Some friend's had the Louisiana Seafood Platter to which they said was amazingly good.

Overall i would go back but with so many restos in Mtl i have yet to been to, it will be awhile.

PS...On the EagerBeaver scale to take a dinner date i would give it a 6 or 7, it is small and the tables are sort of close but could still be romantic if the place is not packed.

Their oyster menu looks quite extensive. When it comes to oysters, my preference is to have them fried tempura style, as in Japanese restaurants, or broiled Rockefeller style. It seems like this place has the Rockefeller variety, and many different oysters varied by origin.

There is another highly rated seafood restaurant called Lucille's, which I believe has a location in Westmount outside of the downtown. I have wanted to try it for some time. They are also known for their oysters.

The Lucille's in Westmount is the noisiest place I have been in decades. Bring earplugs. Really.
