Actually Wolfie, the best steaks in MTL as far as I am concerned are at CHOPS on Queen Mary corner Decarie...No question!...Expensive but well worth it...the DelMonico rib eye and the Manhattan rib eye steak are to die for!

http://www.restobarchops.com/menu

L'Entrecote St-Jean is a great restaurant for steak (only one steak on the menu and it's a NY strip loin) as well. In terms of value and French bistro atmosphere you can't beat it!

CHOPS
Thanks for the info Sharkman.

I'll try that restaurant before going back to South America (in two weeks).

I'm a little bit concerned however by the fact that they serve kosher meat. Isn't it an heresy (from a gastronomical point of view) to eat a kosher steak? I'm an agnostic but from what I know about Judaism isn't true that they are not allowed to eat meat with blood? For me a good steak is a meat with blood that was not soaked into water.

I'll try it because I'm curious and I trust your recommandation (Observe however that I 've spent the last 25 years between Montreal/São Paulo and Florianopolis...in other words when it comes to carne de bife I'm very picky and hard to please)

Between you and me...we all know how bad are the restaurants in the USA (except in New York and LA...and probably other (few) places)

Quoi?? You realize the girl is American, right? ;)

There are plenty of great places to eat outside of NY and LA in the US. Though I would agree LA is the best, and blows away Montreal and Toronto. Depending on what you want to eat, even Texas and Nebraska can have amazing restaurants (steak). Boston, DC, Miami, Chicago, Portland area, New Orleans, Charleston, SF all have world-class Michelin-level restaurants. Pretty wrong bone to pick on that one. :nono:

The US is too big, too rich, and too diverse not to have wonderful places to eat. :thumb:

I would've said the same thing 10 years ago, but London is not so bad for food anymore. Still expensive as stupid hell, but the quality of food has grown by leaps and bounds. And it's really good when you leave the city and eat at some of the country inns. I was happily surprised.

The Swiss still lack good taste though. So I guess that proves your point. ;)

DAAAAAAAYUM!!!! I just got my ass handed to me!

I feel so emasculated !

 Maybe we caught them on a good day

Funny how everyone seems to like this place! I thought their food was terrible

Enfin!!

Terrible. Jamais compris pourquoi les gens font la file pour ce resto.

C'est meilleur l'Entrepôt à 4,95$ l'assiette. ;-)

How do they have such good ratings on the internet?
I remember going there hungover, it wasn't as bad as let's say... Restaurant Blanche Neige in Cote-Des-Neiges. But it wasn't really good..

As wolfie said, any french/terroir restaurant offers pretty good confit, its not as hard has magret to cook it. But some classic place to go eat it, would be L'Express on st-denis or Lemeac on Laurier street.
.
As most should know Lemeac is a great place for late dinner

Natalino's in Dorval: A nice little gem

So i decided to treat myself last night to some authentic italian after cycling over 100k the last 3 days and while riding on the bike trails near lachine a week earlier, i ventured off them and into lachine and dorval and noticed several restaurants. With good memory i looked most of them up on the 'net and had decided to try Bellissimo but as i drove up to it, it looked pretty crowded (a good sign tho) and decided to check out another place just down the street that i had never noticed while riding by there previously, so i said what the heck, i will TOFTT without checking any reviews.

As soon as i stepped foot into Natalino's I was greeted warmly and seated promptly. The place is a converted home i learnt from the reviews i later read and decorated nicely and would definitely be a place for a romantic date and or going with friends or a business meeting as well.

Once seated the waiter introduced himself and gave me the menu and water and 3 small bruchetta on the house. They were tasty but nothing over the top.

Decided on a glass of red wine and Saltimbocca https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saltimbocca and substituted the grilled veggies for a nice house salad. The Saltimbocca was super tender and perfectly seasoned and a delight. Also took a order of homemade meatballs that were delicious and the sauce was divine as well.

Dinner also came with two mini loaves of italian bread which were crusty on the outside and warm/soft on the inside just as they should be. House dressing on the salad was fine as well.

Overall it was a fabulous dinner and with wine ($8 glass) it came to $42 plus tip. I read reviews while waiting for my food and most were outstanding and one person even rated it a top 3 italian resto in the greater montreal area. Myself, I thought it was superb and would definitely return.

I went to l'avenue with a Merb friend, the food was good-average. But I would not do line up to eat there anymore...and the most terrible thing was the music....I felt I was in a rave at 11am eating breakfast and so loud!
Tourist trap for me it is.

This restaurant is for naive people who follow the herd. ;-)

I personally like L'Avenue although a tad expensive, I have noticed that they give bigger portions now than before, they also have some of the hottest servers that I have ever seen who would make a lot more money if they were escorting.

Bingo. I've eaten there numerous times, simply because it's close and were with others who chose it. The fact that people stand out there interminably in all weather is quite bizarre.

Au Pain Perdu, just two blocks away on De La Roche is much, much better and there's always seating.

There's also a new place, just opened last week where Misto used to be, called Cacao 70 that has a wonderful looking menu, naturally much of which features chocolate this and chocolate that. Be advised that they don't open until 10.
