Not too much hobbying done on my last trip, but got back to how I fell in love with this city in the first place: FOOD!!! :lol: While I couldn't / can't / won't ever be able to replicate the epic hobbying trip reports by members of old like muffinbuffer... I can be fairly epic in my appetite for the great restaurants in Montreal. :D 4 days, 3 nights, 15 restaurants:

Day 1
Europea - client lunch; very close to fun ;) :D, but alas, work beckoned; very elegant restaurant; always a favorite spot for working lunches; two excellent tasting menu options, both very reasonably priced; nothing over-the-top innovative, but classics executed well; I inevitably get the calmar citronné and the scallops every time I come; the lobster bisque / "cappuccino" is just gimmicky, but people like it.

Le Serpent - same family of restaurants as Le Filet and Club Chasse et Peche; falling in love with the neighborhood (is this Griffintown?), Le Local is just around the corner; pretty crowd, very cool warehouse space, food was so so; their "kit of 3" was excellent - hamachi, mackerel, salmon; the octopus with potato mousseline and salsa verde not so much, the cream sauce just doesn't go well with octopi (sharkman saved me with a much better octopus place later in the trip!); nice place to grab a drink, though.

Le Bremner - my go-to spot for seafood in Vieux Port; great staff; no princess scallops yet (in another month they told me); oysters and cocktails; and their decadent fried quail (they used to have a bucket, now they're more restrained).

Day 2
Lawrence - one of my favorite restaurants in the city in the last year; simple food, almost 'peasant' dishes, but beautifully cooked; weekend brunch is great, love the kedgeree and oyster mushrooms, but it's a madhouse, weekday lunches are much more peaceful; had an excellent beef tartare and the Matane shrimp (will have to repeat as they're only in season for a few more weeks).

(Schwartz's) - was in the neighborhood, and I walked from Lawrence, so why the hell not?? Delicious Montreal smoked meat. Oh, if only the Red Wings won, then Mike Babcock would've enjoyed himself some smoked meat, too... Oh well. So many years of coming to Montreal, I have still never eaten in the restaurant itself, I've always gone next door to the takeout counter, where there is still never a line.

Le Filet - the oysters, the oysters, the oysters; two dozen, split between the jalapeno and maple syrup garnished and the gratin de miso - if I have a permanent fixture in my Montreal TDL, it's this place and the miso oysters.

Salmigondis - I had such high hopes for this place... So many great reviews, so I trekked all the way out to the middle of nowhere to eat... and was disappointed; the cooking was so bland... meh, and it's priced just as high as Vieux Port (WTF); the foie to start - such a tiny cut for $22, it's portioned like you're in the heart of the Plateau at an established restaurant or in Old Port, I could get a size like that at Le Local for $10 extra with my duck confit... I also sampled the venison tartare and the magret, OK, but no brightness in the flavors, all pretty standard and bland; rabbit for my main - again, bland inside; it's like they didn't stew it long enough or marinate long enough, the flavors on the outside didn't sink all the way in; tried the lamb as well, which the waiter recommended - meh. Thumbs down, way down.

(La Belle Province) - poutine, delicious crazy fatty poutine; the one on Prince Arthur and St. Laurent is my favorite - simple, clean, relative close to favorite watering holes; the one near Chinatown always seems to have drunks and sloppy drunks at that... Multiple SPs have told me Montreal Pool Room is the best - I think they've lost their taste buds... :p :D

Day 3
Elounda - thanks sharkman for the recommendation! Way outside of 'downtown' - ok, not really, but sorta; worth the drive, though; I only recently learned that MTL has a huge Greek population, so had to follow up on the rec and try a Greek restaurant, no? Stuffed calamari, fried anchovies, octopus (Tunisian - who knew there was octopi from there? But no matter, it was excellent!!) to start; dorade, langoustines, chilean sea bass, lamp chops for the mains; got a chance to sample everything - delicious! Excellent value, fresh ingredients, simple cooking well executed - well worth the trek.

Ma Poule Mouillée - following up on this thread's recommendation, decided to try this place; I agree the poutine with the saucissons is excellent! And humongous! And they take credit cards! But the chicken is not as flavorful as Romados. Just not as aggressive in their seasoning. The original wins. But the poutine here is awesome. Thanks MERB! :thumb:

Les 3 Petits Bouchons - early dinner; had to follow up on Adam black's recommendation of this place for princess scallops; alas, no princess scallops either, not until November (so Le Bremner has better connections?? :confused:); oh well, food was still excellent, Quebec-style - rich and hearty and filling; I'll have to come back in November.

'Fun.'

Bouillon Bilk - after an early dinner with civilians, a late dinner for my own indulgence; my favorite 'high-end hipster' spot in Montreal since last year; and also oh-so-close to fun :D, it's become habit to drop by here afterwards...; some of the most beautifully plated food, anywhere; bright, contrasting flavors; interesting, new-ish ingredients and inventive preparations; hamachi, crab, scallops, magret; done, a good day of eating.

Day 4
Kazu - was tempted and walked by to try again; ridiculous crowd and packed; while staring into the mess, I saw a waitress knock over a glass of water onto her customers, don't know how that doesn't happen more in such a cramped fire hazard... Skipped the line. Maybe next time. Again.

Vieux Port Steakhouse - I know it's cliche, and a tourist trap; but their before-6 prix fixe menu can't be beat, when you want decent food at a low price in a great location. Any other great table d'hote lunch deals in Old Port you know of?

Romados - pick up some chicken to take home; still the best flavor.

If anyone has similar restaurants that are better alternatives, LET ME KNOW!!! Reservations for this upcoming trip booked this morning! RDV's booked, too! Fantastic suite. Excellent weather, fingers crossed. VIP-1!!! Excited - and balanced in my excitement for once! :p

@Aspen. Peru - yum!! Best place to eat in LatAm, and quite possibly one of the best places in the world to eat in, right now! Peruvian is my favorite Latin food, fusion before we knew WTF fusion cooking was... I've only been once, but want to make a return trip to Lima sooner rather than later. Hope you had an awesome time! Oh, and I guess Machu Pichu's not too shabby, either. :p

Are there good Peruvian resto's in Montreal?

Thanks for the recs, Aspen and grenouille! El Gaucho and Las 3 Conchitas and others you mentioned have been added to my TDL. :D

Argentine beef actually can't be imported into the US for fear of mad cow (though oddly Uruguayan beef can...), so that would be cool if Canada does allow. That beef is without equal.

I had no idea Montreal had a Peruvian population - will definitely check out Jean-Talon, haven't been to that neighborhood in years, and have been meaning to return. Let's see how it compares to Doral, which I think is the mecca for Peruvian in North America. I actually have been to Mezcla, I think in the first few months they were open, a few years back. Was actually disappointing, despite rave reviews from critics. I thought his cooking was too heavy handed, bordering on crude. One of the rare places I can remember where I left food on the plate. May have to give it another shot. Nice date spot though, I agree - if only I lived here and dated! :p

Yum.

Look behind you.
Thought I would give a plug for Les 3 Brasseurs on St.Denis.
I was there in March and probably had one of the best beef dips ever. Not too impressed with my first beer choice ( tasted like pepper ) but after a couple of samples I found one I liked ( forget the name ).
Two thumbs up to the waitress, great service and very friendly.

Yes, Peruvian food is really the best, the country who as more dishes in the world, so many food cultures and fusion!!
My favorite restaurant in Lima I tried was Rafael http://rafaelosterling.pe/
I sat at the bar and just ordered everything they recommended to me.

As for peruvian restaurant in Montreal there is quite a few.

if you want more some authentic peruvian food, Las 3 conchitas is great for seafood. Villa wellington is also a classic, its been open since ever, I remember going there every sunday when i was younger.

in the area of jean-talon, in villeray there is a bunch of peruvian food, nothing pretentious just simple peruvian food, but always great.

I agree. When I'm in Montreal I always eat at one of the Peruvian restaurants on St-Hubert (near Villeray). Las 3 conchitas and Sol y Mar. I never went to El Jibaro but i've heard that they were fined for insalubrity

Yeah...here it is: http://www.journaldemontreal.com/2015/01/16/crasse-et-puanteur-au-restaurant-peruvien-el-jibaro

Good evening Wolfie,

Sad news... THis week-end I passed in front of El Gaucho.... Closed... God Damn it !!!

Bye,

D'oh! Guess I snooze, I lose. Just like with SPs. :p

I was just at a Gaucho's last week in London. In fact, it was a chain there. Pretty good Argentine beef. I wonder if this was part of that chain. Probably not, as the name would be pretty common for a steakhouse... But now that I know Montreal has Argentine beef... the search is on! :D

Still no sightings of princess scallops this trip. :(

Last week, I had an unusual week, I went out for diner twice...

Wednesday evening - Joe Beef (Notre-Dame West, close to Charlevoix)
Great location (close to Atwater market);
Excellent food (steak) and large portion. We took ladie's plate and it was big;
Excellent wine, (they had a very good selection of wine by the glass);
Excellent service (very friendly and helpful. You can see that they like what they do);
Being a wine lover (I hate to buy wine in a resto, I'd rather go to a Bring Your Wine), the personel did recommend me a great dessert wine... so good;
Great spirit collection (Grappa for instance);
Great atmosphere (it is small and packed but very friendly place);
Pricey but it was worth it;

Thursday evening - Commerce (Notre-Dame West, close to 500 McGill in Old Montreal)
Great location (close to Victoria metro);
Excellent food (their pasta plate and chicken plate were excellent);
Excellent wine;
Excellent service (bar personnel was very friendly and attentive to our needs);
Being a wine lover (I hate to buy wine in a resto, I'd rather go to a Bring Your Wine), they had a very good Spanish red wine (own importation from Jumilla region);. They have a nice liqueur bar, we had a Grand Marnier Cuvée du Cent-Cinquantenaire... exquisite;
Great atmosphere (it is a modern place, decor is nice);
Very affordable, but Management sucks and they rushed us out at 01h00. What started as great evening, end-up as a nightmare. So sad for me, my friend and bar employee who had to get the boss shit;

I was disappointed in the food at Commerce, the quality was above average but the portions were super tiny for the price. Can do much better elsewhere for less $$$$$$$

Joe Beef on the other hand is epic in every way.

Since the weather is now nice and the bike is out of storage and i am back riding on the Lachine Trails among other places, i decided to reward myself at Smoked Meat Petes again and it was as good as the first time a week or 2 ago. Lean and juicy as always, their smoked meat sandwich does not disappoint, a friend got the smoked meat poutine and i tried it and that was awesome as well.

I wish they had a place downtwon, on second thought i am glad they dont lol too much of this comfort food wrecks all the good that cycling does.

Anybody try the Brazilian restaurant in old Montreal?

Yes...I did.

http://rodiziobrasil.ca/wp/

The problem with Brazilian restaurants in Montreal is that (sometimes) essential ingredients are missing (for example: couve (green collards), a very good farofa and beef from Argentina. Take into consideration that beef from Argentina is very expensive here (it is too in Brazil....but it is soo good...I can easily taste the difference.

I've tried all the Brazilians restaurants here in Montreal (since 1980). There was a good one on Amherst street (between René-Lévesque aka then as Dorchester and St.Catherine) the only problem was that they served a mix of Brazilian foods with cajun cuisine. I remember that it was the first time when my daugther ate Jacaré (crocodile)) (I think that the name of the restaurant was Nega Fulô.

So, this churrascaria is okay (it is better than Senzala on Boulevard L'Acadie) but I still prefer Milsa on Bishop street... I met some brazucas there in the past

Bayou Brazil (which was located on St. Denis near Mont-Royal) was not too bad (the owner was a real paulista : i.e. from São Paulo).

The other problem with Brazilian restaurant here in Montreal is that they have a limited choice of cachaça......

Went to Nora Gray the other night. Fresh Pea and Ricotta Tortellini bathed in butter, peas and fava.
Wish I could have licked it off of someone to make it that much sweeter....
