I'm glad he's gone. He constantly pushed the envelope and stepped over the line....over and over and over! Enough is enough!! He'd become a joke & his divisive comments served no good purpose.

All he had to do was apologize and he refused to. There was a lot of pressure on the network to get rid of him. I also would have fired Ron Mclean who somewhat would enable Cherry by doing nothing other than his usual thumbs up!

I used to watch Coach's Corner regularly but over the past couple of years i'd switch channels before he'd come on. Good riddance!!!

Can someone explain, without any judgement, how his comment were so offensive? I am probably too stupid but I don't get it.

Cherry has said much worsts in his career. And ever since Guy Lafleur scored the goal tying goal in the final of 79 (because of his coaching mistake) he has pissed on the french pea soup quebecois... Until Martin St-Louis came along which seem to change his mentality over us..

But this time really I do not see why all the backlash...

Cheers,

Agree with Doc. Glad he's gone. I'm actually surprised he lasted this long given all the stuff he's said over the past years

As a reminder to ALL CANADIANS (not just anglos or french), every year our Canadian government honors our soldiers for Remembrance Day and if took a message from Don Cherry to make people realize it then so be it...I'm all for Cherry's wake up call despite his controversial comments!...I was at work today, half of the people had no idea what November 11th represents!...The US has more respect for its war veterans compared to Canada...Ask a newly arrived immigrant to Canada and you mention the date November 11 they'll think its related to 9/11 and terrorists!

His comments were stupid, who made him the conscience of Canadians.
I don’t think he needed to be fired for that it was just a stupid comment and coming from him people should have been used to it by now.

Other than that he had become a joke, someone living in the past, he wants to see constant fights he should tune in to the WWF or other contact violent sports. Perhaps he can become a mascot for a fight club.
I much prefer the fast paced speed and skill related hockey of today

I am a little surprised he was fired. He has made a litany of controversial comments in the past and never got fired for them, so SportsNet in my eyes looks hypocritical because they tolerated his other comments and they knew what they had on their hands with Cherry.

As a practical matter, at age 85, shouldn’t he be retired anyway? Dude is older than my father who has been retired for 24 years!!!!! Maybe SoortsNet did Cherry a favor?

^^^^^ Just like people surprised that Trump tweets like an ass. It is Cherry, what do you expect. Opinions can not be given anymore, either assimilate or be chastised, evident everywhere when the politically correct are involved.

Don Cherry is still around ? Wow what longevity. Maybe he was ready for retirement anyways and decided WTF just push the envelope more and see what happens. He might actually be glad he went out this way.

I agree with you. I mean really I have watch the thing he said saturday over and over and really I do not see where is all the fuss about. I have to admit I agree with him! Yes immigrant coming here should be concerned by the sacrifice war veterans did to defend our liberty. Fuck is that much to ask?

That said dont get me wrong I always hated Don Cherry because of his past comment on French canadians.

I think it’s an overreaction but also think they did Cherry a favor. Now he can whip out the pink retirement bathing suit and kick it up in the Bahamas, or maybe Turks and Caicos or Aruba, while sipping pina coladas in the jacuzzi. That’s how he should be spending his remaining days, in retirement. Not really a terrible life if you ask me.

Don Cherry had made worse comments before about French Canadians, Russians, Swedes, you name it, he only liked good old canadian boys, preferably English speaking and willing to drop the gloves for any stupid reason. I hated the way he was so pro Leafs, not unusual for a die hard Habs fan.
He was a Canadian redneck.
This was not a reason to fire him, but all this PC BS finally caught up with him too.

In the beginning he made me laugh but too much of the same shit, he actually became annoying.
He was stuck in the past and it was time to turn him out to pasture.
Wonder what his bobble head partner will end up doing.

I'm an immigrant and I think he's correct when saying we don't care about the poppy. I will still show respect if I see a veteran. Most young Canadians don't even care.
What's the point of even bring that up? Instead of focusing on what divide us let's see how we can build bridges between us, what a dumbass.

It's not just immigrants who don't care about the poppy.

The majorty of millenials and people up to the age of 40 don't wear the poppy. I didn't see a single person in University or at work wearing it including ''non-immigrants''. Had he spoken in a more general sense, his comment would have been fine. It's the fact that he targeted immigrants rather than simply asking all Canadians to wear it, is where the issue lies (and the way he did it was highly unprofessional). As kkrack said, he could have said it in a way that unites Canadians rather than dividing us.

In regards to retirement, yes he is 85 but he is healthy, still has an audience and he is still entertaining with his colourful jackets and vocabulary, etc, and he draws a $1,000,000 per year salary to speak on Saturday's for approx 10 minutes for 9 months of the year, no reason to retire, damn good deal for a 85 year old(IM0).
