ALCAZAR was just toooo good....BUT...what a game..... :) ..credit to TIAFOE who played his best...BUT it was tooo much for him. Carlos--at only 19--is already a prodigious player and soon a true #1...;)

Will play tomorrow RUUD,....from nowhere....not a spectacular player......quiet indeed BUT doing all lttle things well.....for sure we will have a surprising new CHAMP and #1......CARLOS should b the one.....:)

And this afternoon....go IGA.

I’m going to put a wager on today’s final. I was going to wager on Swiatek but the return isn’t very good. I don’t know much about Jabeur but after reading up about her game and what she needs to do to win i’m intrigued. Should i put my money on Jabeur which will fetch me a good return if she wins?

The 2-2 head to head seemingly makes it a good bet. The fact that she has faced the Swiatek heavy topspin, and beaten it, is certainly encouraging for Jabeur bettors. It's probably easier to face on a hard court than clay.

I have to agree Gaby. I was remarkably impressed by Alcaraz. From what I saw he is an incredibly good all around player. To me, he is a more athletic Andre Agassi. I don't think Agassi was as good of a serve and volleyer as Alcaraz, but he is like Agassi as far as you have to expect him to get to, and then return every shot with power and depth. His defensive two handed backhand is remarkably effective.

But kudos to Tiafoe for the improvements he has made in his game. I don't know if you guys saw him a few years back when he came on tour but his defensive forehand was completely SHIT and non-competitive. I watched a match around 3 years ago in which he played someone good (forget who) and he got drilled in 3 sets as the opponent relentlessly and mercilessly pounded on his forehand side, and Tiafoe's return shots on his forehand side were ridiculously weak looking, even drawing harsh criticism from the match commentators that he has to improve on that shot. He has made his defensive forehand competitive. He would have been straight setted again yesterday if he had not. Tiafoe's strengths are his serve and his athleticism, and if he continues to improve he will be a threat to win a major. He beat two top 10 players pretty easily and took the likely soon to be #1 in the world to 5 sets, which kind of speaks for itself.

Both players---ALCAZAR and TIAFOE--have a pretty noticeable entourage/coaching.....WAYNE FERREIRA--South African former prof. tennis----is now behind TIAFOE'S successes.....and same for CARLOS with JUAN CARLOS FERREIRO....great coaching is
the way to success....and both are in good hands.

Jabeur is getting hosed so far in this match. Hitting lots of shots long and wide and in the net which is a sign of the topspin coming in real heavy and exploding off the racket.

Ons is not on!

I feel that in women's tennis, the position of top women's player keeps changing from time to time. First we had Naomi Osaka as the top player, then Emma Raducanu was all the hype last year and now it's Iga Swiatek.

It's like a revolving door as to who's the true queen of women's tennis whereas the mens tennis side, the top guns (nadal, djokovic, etc) there are never dethroned until recently

Skymining,

Emma Radacanu was never #1 nor did she come close to sniffing it. Her peak rank was #10. Naomi Osaka was #1 and had #1 talent, but was #1000 mentally. She is a complete and total head case who cannot handle pressure, media or anything that most pro athletes deal with routinely. I doubt she will ever be #1 again. These two should not even be in any discussion on this issue.

Iga Swiatek stands on totally different footing. She is 21 years old, has won 3 majors, and hasn't lost a set in any of the the 3 major finals she has played. Barring major injuries, she is a generational talent, with the topsin she generates on her forehand. We are talking Martina Navritolova or Steffi Graf or Serena type generational talent. She will likely always be better on the clay courts than hard courts, so it's possible she could develop into more of a clay court Queen, but yesterday announced her arrival on hard courts.

I do see Coco Gauff as her possible long term competition. Coco is only 18 years old and 3 years behind Swiatek developmentally. But Coco eventually could challenge Swiatek, especially at the US Open and Wimbledon. I was disappointed with Coco in her loss in the QF to Caroline Garcia. I expected that match to be more competitive and Coco to win. So she still has work and maturation to do. Maybe we expect too much from her, but she is only 18. Coco has an edge on Iga athletically and in her power potential but even with that, Iga's topspin will make her a big challenge.

I should also note that the way Iga hits her forehand may put stress on her wrist and elbow over time. Just like Tiger Woods' golf swing put stress on his lower legs, causing him to change it. So we will need to see how healthy she can remain over time.

I hear you but to me, i just find Swiatek to be bland. Looks-wise and her style is not that exciting, to be honest. Heavy topspin shots ya but she's generic in style. Nothing i havent seen before in women's tennis.

I have never seen anyone who hits heavy topspin like she does on the women's side. Her forehand is a helicopter type swing which I haven't seen before from any woman. Bjorn Borg is the best comparison I can think of for that forehand and that's going way back. To me she is an unusual player. Most of the other top women were just big hitters. It's refreshing to see someone who isn't dominating with power tennis.

Congrats to Carlos Alcaraz for winning the US Open and becoming the youngest male to be ranked #1 in ATP history. Carlos is an exceptional all around talent, is fun to watch and a great competitor. I hope Ben Shelton, who is 18 and straight setted Casper Ruud just a few weeks ago, will rise up and create a great long term rivalry. Tennis could use such a rivalry especially with the Big 3 of Nadal, Federer and Djokovic likely to fade away in the next few years.

For my money the best tennis rivalry of all time was JohnnMcEnroe vs. Bjorn Borg. Both players were ranked #1, and both won many majors. The head to head was brief due to Borg's sudden retirement while still at the top of his game, but was dead even at 7-7. I was fortunate to have been alive at the time, and watched some of their matches. Those 2 produced the best tennis I have ever seen in their matches with each other. Here is the tale of the tape:
There is a movie about their rivalry, a well reviewed Swedish production called Borg v. McEnroe:

Meh...Carlos is just another Nadal clone. Did we really need another Spanish player winning a Slam?

I wanted a different nationality to win a Slam. Instead it's always the same players winning these slams.

I wouldve preferred Tiafoe to win the US Open because that, at least, would be different.
