Caroline Garcia into semifinals after winning her 6th straight match against a top 20 player. She was hitting some impressive forehand winners all over the Court and caught Coco flat footed many times. My feeling was that Coco ran into a buzzsaw. I don't think anyone wants to play Garcia the way she is playing right now. She has a big accurate serve, and has a ridiculously good forehand which she likes to hit cross court to deter player movement and force coverage on that side.

Coco had a few too many unforced errors, but she was under a lot of pressure and was rushing her shots. She looked like she was struggling to keep the match competitive and she managed to do so, but Garcia was the clear aggressor in this match from start to finish and she deserved to win.

Of the guys left my money would be on Ruud or Alcaraz, but I think we will see long matches (4 and 5 sets) with the remaining matches and any one of these guys can win including Khachanov.

First set to Iga Swiatek over Jessie Pegula. Swiatek features an unusual helicopter forehand that she is using to generate some very heavy topspin. The topspin was driving Pegalu nuts! After hitting a bunch of bad returns in the net and long, she came to the sidelines looking for a new racket and better results. That's when you know someone is psyched out.

Swiatek in straight sets.

If you guys watch Swiatek, she is hitting a most unusual forehand. She really uses her wrist to develop topspin as she hits on top of the ball and whips through with a helicopter motion. It reminds me a lot of a Bjorn Borg, the great Swedish clay court player who was the master of topspin. I don't recall a women's player who seems to have such a natural swing for creating topspin. On the ping pong circuit it used to drive me bananas playing against players who swung that way and hit a ball with such heavy topspin. The ball when it come off the table and hits your racket feels like it's gaining speed off the table and explodes off your racket in ways that you can't control. I used to have a special soft paddle that would deaden the topspin, but even using that racket it would still be very hard to return the good topspin slams. In some cases almost impossible. You can learn to time it and return it if the opponent isn't varying the amount of topspin and speed, but the better players mix it up and leave you guessing how much you need to deaden the shot, and usually you don't keep it on the court and over the net.

Garcia was completely dismantled by Jabeur and looked like a shadow of the player who beat Coco Gauff the other night. Jabeur looked good. Not many of you gave Jabeur much of a chance to get this far, but she believes she can beat anyone!

Jabeur vs. Swiatek. They are 2-2 head to head, with each player winning 1 match in straight sets and 1 match in 3 sets. This US Open file will be the rubber match and the winner will take the head to head as well, 3-2

I am tending to agree with your picks, based on what I have seen. Swiatek has a heavy topspin I have not seen in the women's game and she reminds me so much of Borg and the way he played back in the day. Will never forget the 5 set Wimbledon final in 1980 won by Borg over McEnroe, the best tennis match and best tennis I have ever seen between two supremely talented HOF players who were the best players of their era (with some apologies to Jimmy Connors who was very good). Swiatek is the women's answer to Borg.

I root for Tiafoe to win and he is a great athlete, but in the past I always felt he gets in trouble when he had to make returns of tough shots with his forehand. He has a similar weakness to what I had as a ping player, which was that my defensive forehands were shit. I played off my backhand and had an awkward style to face, but once a quality opponent pressured me on my forehand side I was cooked. I am hoping he surprises me and has improved on this weakness more than I did, but expect Alcaraz to win.

First set to Tiafoe, although I thought Alcaraz slightly outplayed him in the set. Tiafoe hanging tough with a big serve slicing away from the opponent, and an improved defensive forehand, although Alcaraz seemed to be hitting to his forehand side a lot. I am very impressed with Alcaraz. He is very smart and has tremendous Court sense and is an extraordinary volleyer. He is fast as hell and strong as an ox. He will be tough to beat especially as he gets more experience.

I was reading that all 4 US Open semi finalists are 1st time semi finalists at this tournament- something that has not happened since 1881, the first year that the US Open was played (in Newport). The tournament was later permanently moved to New York City.
