Gaby,
When I was in college I played in several intramural table tennis tournaments. I seemed to be a Shapo like talent because I was always knocked out 3rd or 4th round. I think the farthest I ever got was the quarterfinals and got thoroughly beaten once I got there.
I did make the finals of two Club Med table tennis tournaments, losing both. The first one was in Club Med Turks and Caicos. I had a lucky draw because everyone I beat sucked. The first really good player I played, who I will admit was a better player than me, beat me in a final in which I had 4 match points. My sense was when we got to match point he somehow picked it up and hit incredible shots and I just couldn't do anything. He hit like 5 or 6 incredible shots in a row and it was over. Very disappointing but I knew in my heart that he was the better player and deserved the win. I congratulated him on his fantastic play. What was upsetting was they gave him a Gold Medal, and I got nothing. No Silver, no Bronze, Nada! It was just like "nice try dude, better luck next time."
The second tournament final was Club Med Cancun a year later. This was a much bigger tournament with 50 or 60 players in the draw. I made it to the finals. Along the way I beat a woman who freaked out after the match. She was yelling and screaming, at herself. She was not bad but made a lot of unforced errors. I played a few other decent players and beat them. In the finals I played a Russian guy who was not as good as the guy who beat me in Turks and Caicos. Somehow, however, he beat me rather decisively. I just did not play well. I have a defensive style of play and play off my backhand, which is very unusual and bothers a lot of people. But the Russian guy was not a good matchup. He kicked my ass. I did not like his demeanor after he won, he was a little too pleased with himself and did not say anything to me, not that I deserved any congratulations after getting drilled.
Even in these meaningless recreational tournaments, you can tell who the Shapos are and who the sportsmen are. You always want to beat the Shapos.
