Oooh ! seems Doc is a little pissed today !
Usually there is more diplomacy in the posting.

But I have to agree in one thing with Doc...

Show me some love, baby! :D

I can't wait for the World Cup to start!! I've already started my own World Cup by playing the new game from EA Sports on my XBox 360. Go England!!!

Well I must say... very good EB.

No word against my remarks on the US wanting to control all the sports.
This is what I call self-control !

Good stuff !

Seems I can go now and leave this forum for a while, there is a gentleman in here !

Have fun !

Well if Eagerbeaver is a gentlemen you sure are not. Babbling and attacking left and right. You sure have a sour spot when it comes to this. Some people are not going to like soccar no matter what and attacking them will not make them change their minds.
As for hockey if the Canadians supported their own sport they would not have moved from Canada to the US.
As for the the bigger market for support in the US, well there are a lot more people living there, unless you find something evil about that.

Bah ! don't worry my dear !

I know I'm no gentleman here.
I don't need to be :)

So have fun on the 9th at Karma !

American football is a player contact sport, soccer is a fan contact sport..lol the soccer fans fight more amoung themselves than the players. I always found something very disturbing about fans that had so little of a life that they built their self esteem around what others did. One of the reasons soccer turns me off.

Hello all,

Some you guys are sooooooo cute...lol. So how many of you have actually played soccer at all? I see some presumptions obviously being made more out of lack of experience than fact.

I left hockey early because while skating was a strength, puck handling was not. I was much more suited for soccer and enjoyed playing in high school for a few years. Sure it's not nearly as violent as American football or hockey...on the surface, but all you've got are shin guards and a cup. You can't do a whole lot to protect yourself whether defending or attacking and a flying or lunging body makes a mean projectile. When all your thoughts are on ball control you are vulnerable as hell, especially against the banzai type of player. I received and saw a fair share of hard hits that inflicted many of the same injuries received in ANY other sports, some very very serious. So stop poo-pooing the physical risks when you have no experience. Referee cards come out quick because a player with the ball cannot defend themselves against anything except by escaping. Your body is almost completely open to any shot anywhere, many you never see coming.

And I am not trying to play a game of which sport is tougher or more dangerous. Just the facts, so lets not act like you get any points in life for arguing hockey or American football is tougher or rougher. No one is saying they aren't. The "issue" is just pointless.

I have to agree that the soccer field should be downsized by about 20-25%. Bring the scoring threat closer and create the opportunity to make scoring far more frequent. There is far too much jockeying back and forth with the ball leading to little of anything except possession changes...boring. But, the net is huge compared to a human being. Maybe some rules changes would help, but making the net bigger would just make the goalie practically useless. On the other hand, a hockey goalie can stretch out to reach from pole to pole. The goal does seem a little small compared to the reach of the goalie, even considering the speed of the puck. Why not enlarge it minimally to create more scoring. Though the two sports can't be compared fairly, if 90-95% of scoring opportunities were stopped in the NFL the sport would have been dead long ago.

I always found something very disturbing about fans that had so little of a life that they built their self esteem around what others did. One of the reasons soccer turns me off.

You mean all the hockey threads full of utterly pitiful endless childish sniping aren't pointlessly obsessed with silly..."na na na na na na"...and it turns you on.

Cheers,

Merlot

Two thirds of pro football players have injuries which last a lifetime. The risk to one's brain makes boxing barbaric. I enjoy watching football and boxing, but neither is a healthy sport to play at any age. If the purpose of sport is to improve one's overall physical condition, both fail. Middle aged and older people can enjoy playing soccer, hockey and tennis against each other, but that is obviously not true for tackle football and boxing. I don't see the relevance of discussing how rough a sport is - Tennis and squash are very demanding physically. Are they sissy sports because players don't normally try to inflict physical pain on each other?

I find basketball boring as it seems to me that the team on offence scores more than half the time. I haven't the patience for soccer for the opposite reason - too little scoring. I think that one has to know quite a lot about soccer to appreciate the non-scoring plays. I don't watch soccer, but I respect those who do.

:)))) I like this observation !

Now let's try this : Some people here are saying that Soccer is boring cuze there is not enough goals...

Now imagine if Football would be 1pt. per touchdown.
Wouldn't that be weird to get wacked and sacked so hard for one f*king pt ?

BTW.. don't know about some guys here who don't want to stir anything in a sport section but... seems to me, sport shouldn't be about being sissy...Even in words !

Anyone who played Hockey, Football, Basketball or soccer... should know better.

Hardship, injuries and insults are comon in sports. and it's part of the game.

I've never played a game hearing things like :
"let's play like adults"...or
"Oh gosh ! you won...I'm so happy for you !"
"Didn't mean to whack you in the head ... I'm so sorry...I'll make it up to you !"

I see a trend developing here that isn't healthy...

I suggest those who don't like soccer to go play in another thread. This thread is to discuss the World Cup of Soccer and I see very few posts doing so.

Irrelevant posts will be deleted without further notice. Those who want to discuss the pros/cons of soccer versus other sports can do in in a new thread.

Thanks.

I don't know yet which team will be my favorite one. I'm waiting for the first round to pick my favorite ones. For sentimental reasons I select a priori Spain and Brazil. For other reasons, I'm ready to hate France and Italy (the team I love to hate). I'm eager to see how Ghana will play in this international competition.

Saturday night I went out with a friend of mine and his wife (they were visiting Montreal for the second time; the first time was in 1978) while they were attending a congress in Montreal. The wife of my friend was surprised to see in my car (because i gave them a lift from the restaurant Le Milsa to the Novotel) that I was ready to support the Brazilian team: a have a cap, and a jersey. Today I'm wearing a soccer jersey (the black goalie jersey) of the Corinthians Paulista (one of the professional club in São Paulo). But I guess that nobody knows this club in Montreal and they are unable to recognize the logo on the jersey: Batavo, bozzano, Pan Americano. The only well known logo is the Nike logo and the name Ronaldo (the 'gordinho' Ronaldo plays for that club).

My favorite player on the seleção: ROBINHO!

Not an international player (he plays for the Santos Futebol Clube. Those knowing soccer will recognize that Santos was Pele's club) but he's spectacular.

Vou torcer pelo Brasil!!!! Ueba!

Of course I will attend the game tonight!

I fear however that my date for the game tonight will steal the show. I'm going there with a superb tall and curvy morena from Porto Alegre.

Tonight there was a pre-Mundial feeling in the air. The crowd at the Big O was huge : almost 48,000 peopel were there to acclaim one of the best sport team in the world and one of the best soccer players.

Ronaldinho was the main attraction. He received a big ovation whe he came on the field. He greeted the crowd and he was simling a lot. After the warm up he threw his jersey into the crowd. He scored a goal after a penalty. As usual his technique was flawless. It was also nice to see Pato and Seedorf. The second half was a little bit boring because the Impact did not really threathened the AC Milan's goaler Colombo.

It was really a big party. I saw a lot of jersey from all around the world. Naturally, several AC Milan jerseys and Brazilian seleção jerseys with (former) Ronaldinho number on it. There were connaisseurs in the crowd because three group of people recognized my Corinthians São Paulo jersey. I had fun.
