Hello all,
Some you guys are sooooooo cute...lol. So how many of you have actually played soccer at all? I see some presumptions obviously being made more out of lack of experience than fact.
I left hockey early because while skating was a strength, puck handling was not. I was much more suited for soccer and enjoyed playing in high school for a few years. Sure it's not nearly as violent as American football or hockey...on the surface, but all you've got are shin guards and a cup. You can't do a whole lot to protect yourself whether defending or attacking and a flying or lunging body makes a mean projectile. When all your thoughts are on ball control you are vulnerable as hell, especially against the banzai type of player. I received and saw a fair share of hard hits that inflicted many of the same injuries received in ANY other sports, some very very serious. So stop poo-pooing the physical risks when you have no experience. Referee cards come out quick because a player with the ball cannot defend themselves against anything except by escaping. Your body is almost completely open to any shot anywhere, many you never see coming.
And I am not trying to play a game of which sport is tougher or more dangerous. Just the facts, so lets not act like you get any points in life for arguing hockey or American football is tougher or rougher. No one is saying they aren't. The "issue" is just pointless.
I have to agree that the soccer field should be downsized by about 20-25%. Bring the scoring threat closer and create the opportunity to make scoring far more frequent. There is far too much jockeying back and forth with the ball leading to little of anything except possession changes...boring. But, the net is huge compared to a human being. Maybe some rules changes would help, but making the net bigger would just make the goalie practically useless. On the other hand, a hockey goalie can stretch out to reach from pole to pole. The goal does seem a little small compared to the reach of the goalie, even considering the speed of the puck. Why not enlarge it minimally to create more scoring. Though the two sports can't be compared fairly, if 90-95% of scoring opportunities were stopped in the NFL the sport would have been dead long ago.
You mean all the hockey threads full of utterly pitiful endless childish sniping aren't pointlessly obsessed with silly..."na na na na na na"...and it turns you on.
Cheers,
Merlot
