It takes years and year to develop good defensemen. Hardest position to play in the NHL. Look at Darnell Nurse, he is a talent but he is still a work in progress. At some point, if the Leafs and Oilers truly want to win championships, they will open up their wallets and spend money on well established veteran defensemen. The Leafs are probably in a slightly better position to do so. Right now, the Leafs and Oilers are simply cheating on that side of the puck, and they aren't going to get away with it in the playoffs. This is not rocket science, it should be obvious to the respective fan bases.

I wholeheartedly agree with your statement. The Leafs are indeed in a better position to deal for a veteran top defenceman, but the problem is that they know they'll be in cap trouble a year or so from now when Auston Matthews, William Nylander and Mitchell Marner will all be due for a huge raise once their current first contract expires. Matthews' annual salary will likely jump up to $10 million/season. Who knows how much Nylander & Marner will get. There's talk about Drew Doughty wanting to join his hometown team once he becomes UFA after this season, but will the Leafs be able to pay him what he'll be asking? JVR will also be UFA after this season & i doubt the Leafs will agree to let him go for nothing. A sign-and-trade scenario could be the likely scenario.

This is why i think it'll be a HUGE mistake if the habs don't send young defenceman Victor Mete back to the London Knights. As you mentioned defenceman is the hardest position to learn in hockey. It often takes a longer time for defencemen to develop. Take Chris Chelios. When i watched him with the habs early on there's no way i could have predicted how good he'd become one day. If you would have told me back then that he'd one day win the Norris trophy i would have laughed!! But Mtl likely felt like i did since they wound up trading him to Chicago for an aging Denis Savard who's best years were clearly behind him at the time. And then Chelios became a star defenceman, headed to the Hockey Hall of Fame and would end up playing well into his forties.

If the habs keep Mete with the big team all season long they'll risk ruining him like they possibly ruined Alex Galchenyuk by keeping him with the big team at age 18 instead of sending him back to Sarnia for another year of junior hockey (he had also missed his entire previous year due to major reconstructive knee surgery).

EB, if you look at goalie stats Cam has better stats than Grant and Andy, you are going on wins and when you had the best forwards in the league and a defense man who was in the top 10 in scoring a goalie can let in more goals because his team will score the extra goals needed. Wins does not make a great goalie an Fuher or Moogs case as the offense did all the work, I could have probably saved enough goals to get many wins with the Oilers in their glory days.

You make a very valid point. It reminds me of the Joey Crawford situation today. Winner of a couple of Stanley Cups. Has won many games. But he still doesn't get the respect from the rest of the league and will likely never be a Vezina trophy candidate because people are saying his success only came because he was fortunate enough to play on great teams.

Just watched CAPS-DEVILS.....i like watching CAPS playing....and what about NICKLAS BACKSTROM.....what a team and quality player.....ne se plaint jamais....joue sur le 2ème trio avec Oshie---not that bad.....et quel superbe passeur et fabriquant de jeux....impressionnant. Un de mes joueurs préférés malgré son low profile.

You can't compare goalie stats now with those amassed in the 1980s - two totally different eras of hockey. None of the goalies from the high scoring 1980s had good stats. There is no way Talbot can be mentioned in same breath as Fuhr, or Moog.

My early prediction that both the Oilers and the Habs would not make the playoffs is looking good right now. The Oilers were totally outclassed at home by the Ottawa Senators last night and the habs were beaten for the first time in 15 games by the surging Maple Leafs.

Of course it's only been 5-6 games and there's plenty of time for things to change.

Yes the Oilers sucked last night and the previous two games before that, Talbot shares a lot of the blame, he let in many weak goals, no drive seen from the offence. Only four games so not really worried yet, Ottawa played very well and pounded Calgary the night before.

Malcom Subban is in nets tonight for Vegas and they lead Boston 2-0 after 2 periods, Subban having stopped all 15 shots. He has a great opportunity.

I repeat my prediction: the Habs and the Oilers will miss the playoffs. Unfortunately since i don't hate the Oilers and the playoffs are never the same without the Habs.

My prediction, the GEO will make the playoffs, hard to make a decision after 5 games, against the Canes they had 51 shots on net and played far better than the last 3 games. I admit that the offense is floating and not the spark as when they played the Flames on game one. After 20 games I will have a better idea if they will be in or out, if they had this slump after 25 games no one would be saying anything.
Still willing to bet they will have more points than the Leafs at the end of the season.
