STN,
Since you brought up the Oilers, they are the prime example of the difference between the real life dynasties of the past, and the wannabe dynasties of the present. The dynasties of the past, like the 1980s Oilers, developed high end offensive talent and high end goalie talent at the same time. In the early 1980s the Oilers developed two excellent young goalies by the names of Grant Fuhr and Andy Moog. Do these names ring a bell? I would point out that Grant Fuhr won 403 NHL games and Moog won 372 NHL games, this despite sharing netminding duties for much of the primes of their career. Cam Talbot on the other hand, at the ripe age of 30, has won 96 NHL games and is little more than a journeyman goalie.
These young teams are building teams through high end offensive talent and gambling that this talent will look exciting and put fannies in the seats. The Oilers, and the Leafs, are not developing or looking for young goaltender talent and young defenseman who can physically disrupt other teams. This is why, at this stage anyway, they are merely wannabe dynasties and not real dynasties like the Islanders and Oilers of the 1980s who staged the last two great dynasties in consecutive years/periods in the 19980s.When these juggernauts met in the 1982-83 and 1983-84 finals, you sensed that a torch was being passed from one great dynasty to another. We just do not see that any more and the teams building with young talent, disgustingly, are loading up on the offensive end talent while neglecting that which wins Cups. That being said I love Darnell Nurse but he needs more help.
Go ask Fuhr and Moog. They drank from some Cups in their day. Talbot couldn't carry the goaltender jockstrap of either of those guys.
