For every hockey player who grew up in Canada, it was the dream of playing for either the Toronto Maple Leafs or the Montreal Canadiens. Similar to MLB in regards to the NY Yankees and Boston Red Sox. For European hockey players it was the better known teams such as the ones jalimon mentioned and also teams their european hockey heroes once played for.
Hall of Fame Russian goaltender Vladislav Tretiak often would say that when he grew up in Russia his dream was to one day play for the famed Montreal Canadiens. After the 1972 Summit Series, the habs even drafted him in the late rounds.....just in case he'd either defect or get his country's permission to leave the Soviet Union. In a few years you'll see young Russian players who idolized Alex Kovalev and Andrei Markov want to play for the habs. Just like young Swedes who grew up idolizing Mats Sundin who'll wish to one day play for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Many American and Canadian hockey players also grew up idolizing the likes of Bobby Hull, Tony Esposito, Phil Esposito and Bobby Orr. Guess who they dreamed of one day playing for: the Chicago Blackhawks and the Boston Bruins. My favorite player growing up was Bobby Orr. My favorite team was the Boston Bruins. In my minor hockey years i wore number 4 and wore a Bruins jersey. We still called it a sweater back then. My Sherwood hockey stick had the name Bobby Orr imprinted in it. Then after September 1972 i became a Paul Henderson fan. I still loved Orr and the Bruins, but i had taped a #19 number onto my helmet. I also loved Phil Esposito after that infamous series. Number 7 would be my number of choice on my next jersey. And once or twice a year, my parents would take me to Maple Leafs Gardens to watch the Leafs. I wasn't a Leafs fan at first, preferring to cheer for the visiting Sabres led by the French Connection. I hated Tiger Williams for trying to intimidate the likes of Danny Gare, Craig Ramsay and Don Luce. But as time went on and the Bruins kept losing heartbreakers to the habs in the playoffs, i slowly more & more became a Leafs fan. Of course the main reason for this was that our CBC affiliate would always broadcast the Leafs game on 'Hockey Night in Canada' and once we got cable we also got the mid-week Leafs game on whichever channel they were on. But Lanny McDonald's famous overtime goal in game 7 against the NY Islanders sealed the deal for me. I won a $5 bet because of that goal and that's why i had been so interested in that series. Sure they sucked during the Ballard years. But they were the team that was always on and i always had hope they'd go back to playing the way they did at the time Roger Neilsen coached them in the mid-to-late 70's.
Go Leafs Go!!!!!!! The future has rarely been brighter than now!!!! :thumb:
